H&S&E test for managers & professionals
I used to be a civil engineering site engineer and then site manager but have been running my own surveying business for 20 years. I recently had to apply for a new card and ordered the test book as I have done in the past. It became increasingly apparent that the current test is far more difficult than it ever was before and the nature of the questions - many of the answers are so similar that its really down to semantics as to which answer is correct. Also, the knowledge required is far in excess of what I use on a day to day basis - I have nothing to do with site management any more and yet I am expected to know about CDM regulations, H&S law, specialist activities, high risk activities etc.
So I thought maybe I could apply for a site engineers card or engineering surveyors card, because that's the job I do when I am on site right? But no! The card finder app wont let me enter a degree in civil engineering as a relevant qualification for either of these two jobs!! Because I have a degree you are forcing me into a managers and professionals test where I will have to learn or memorise hundreds of questions about subjects that a largely irrelevant in my day to day working life. What is the point of this? And why is a degree not a suitable qualification for a site engineer or engineering surveyor?

It is clear that you feel the test is more difficult than it was previously. Whilst we understand that the test has changed significantly and that this presents challenges to candidates, we need to ensure that we are providing managers and professionals with the tools to develop and maintain a safe, skilled and competent workforce, both now and in the future. To do this, we have updated the test and accompanying revision materials to ensure that they are suitable for today’s managers and professionals, taking into consideration changes in legislation, working practices, new technology and industry needs.
You pointed out that the topics covered do not necessarily represent what you do on a day-to-day basis as the owner of your own surveying business. And that some of the areas covered are not relevant or applicable to your profession. Managers and professionals like yourself have a high level of responsibility in their roles and need to understand the risks of working in a construction environment, lead by example, and have the tools needed to embed and implement health and safety protocols and procedures. We want to ensure that we are providing you with the knowledge and information you need to help you to protect those you manage and even those you don’t. To do this, the content needs to encompass the knowledge required of managers and professionals within the construction industry as a whole, not just specific job roles.
We understand that preparing for your test may take longer due to the number of questions in the revision materials and encourage you to do as you have already been proactively doing, and allow sufficient time to revise in advance of your scheduled test.
If you have already booked a test but feel you would benefit from having more time to revise, there is the option to reschedule it. We have provided some guidance on how you can do this below.
- For tests being taken in Pearson VUE centres, you can reschedule for free, up to 72hrs in advance of your scheduled test online. Over the phone, there is a £5 administration charge. Please call: 0344 994 4488
- For tests being taken at ITC’s please contact the centre directly to reschedule at least one week before your scheduled test.
You mentioned that you were unable to enter your degree in Civil Engineering into the card finder app for a site engineers card or engineering surveyors card. Unfortunately, we don’t own or administer the CSCS card scheme or the card finder app. To help you understand why you are unable to use your degree as a suitable qualification for the two cards mentioned above, we would recommend that you contact CSCS directly about this, as they will be able to provide you with more information on what cards you can apply for, and the steps involved. M&P CSCS test V 9 - ridiculous test questions with this update. The responses to other people’s comments are condescending too…Revise more…Buy the app??? People are giving feedback that the questions are not fit for purpose, largely irrelevant and somewhat pot luck - listen to the feedback. We understand you keep saying the questions have been produced by H&S professionals but the questions are simply not appropriate or indeed correct. The potential answers are sometimes so similar you have to guess from what could be two correct answers. You need to conduct a thorough review and admit you’ve got it wrong. Pull the test, revert to the old questions and lower the pass mark until you can sort yourselves out. It is unfair on the majority of working professionals that your incompetence means we cannot renew our cards.

The breadth of content covered enables Managers and Professionals to transfer their knowledge into appropriate behaviours on site, regardless of their role or the sector they work in. Which is why we have strongly recommended that candidates allow sufficient revision time and suggested suitable revision materials.
We are here to support the construction industry and improve health and safety knowledge. That is our primary focus, it’s about keeping people safe. The questions and revision content were developed by qualified HS&E experts and are designed to meet the minimum criteria required by CSCS.
You highlighted in your feedback what you see as the questions not being appropriate or correct. The new Managers and Professionals test has been created to be relevant to the construction industry, not specific job roles.
Candidates taking the test will have a high level of responsibility within their roles, with a duty to protect those they manage and even those they don’t. How this test has made it through…
How this test (CITB MAPS) has made it through stages of review and development and then this is the outcome is ridiculous. Over 800 complicated questions that offer no learning value, the test should be about promoting general health and safety on site, not specific regulations in industries that people have specialised in, the test is far too broad in scope and the grammer is extremely complicated, the whole test needs overhauled. Shameful.

I like many others offer similar feedback. The majority of questions are to vague and options for answers are to closely relatable unless memorising each question word for word. Sadly my results have been poor and I am yet to succeed in a mock test.
Do the industry a favour and revert back to the original set of questions and phase changes in gradually.
To put things simply the maps test has far too much technical waffle. I can appreciate it has been compiled by hs&e experts but it seems like it’s been a contest to make the answer options as ridiculous as possible to outdo each advisor with how technical they can be.
I suspect the board is about to go from
None profit to profit in the coming months.

just wanted to add what a joke the MAP…
just wanted to add what a joke the MAP test is. over 800 wordy questions and for most of them you have to remember which if the vague answers is most correct.
I've had a cscs card of some sort for 20 years now and it's gone from being ridiculously easy to ridiculously hard. no one needs to know the specifics of everything that is covered here.
I've done the smart test more than 30 times now, have covered 65% of the question bank and have only passed twice.
I'll be showing these reviews to my she representative to see what they think about it. seems like a reasonable man would find this new test unreasonable.

How can they expect people to know what course to book when they don't even have a clue how their own system works?

CITB MAP, Extremely difficult and completely pointless test
I am a Chartered Engineer with 25 years of experience, currently preparing for the test. I lead teams of Engineers and Technicians.
The CITB MAP test is a disgrace to the industry. It was clearly prepared by sadistic individuals who lack basic understanding of what we actually do and value the industry needs from a test like this. I can safely say that 80% of the test is completely irrelevant to the majority of the professionals taking it. Did CITB review the test with relevant Institutions like RIBA, ICE, IStructE, CIBSE or RICS?
The questions are both irrelevant and very difficult, especially the way they are written. It is all about memorising answers to more than 800 poorly prepared questions. The test lacks basic intuition and intelligence. Questions are cobbled together from various Acts, Laws, etc, often requiring the exact wording as a correct answer, however with similarly worded wrong answers also offered. Why? Knowing about a section number of a particular Act is of no use to me, unless I am a Lawyer which I am not. If I ever need that information, I can readily obtain it within seconds. Why do we need to memorise that F2508G2 form needs to be signed if a gasway is not sealed off correctly (wrong answers offered are F2508G1, F2508A and F2508)??? Or types of gloves for removing graffiti? This is relevant to some professionals in the industry however not to the vast majority of us taking the test. CITB please remember it is not the exam in Roman Law we are taking.
I keep wondering what is it that this test is trying to achieve, question after question. It should be about keeping ourselves and others safe at work.
The test requires countless hours of preparation at a significant cost both to the individuals and companies involved. On the other other hand, the value added is next to non-existent. At the time when we are struggling to recruit competent individuals to join the industry, coming up with a test like this is an absolute disgrace, demonstrating a clear disconnect between CITB and our needs.
I work for a large organisation and will bring this up with the relevant department as I am sure that the pass rate must be staggeringly low.

In November 2021, we surveyed 10,000 Managers and Professionals across the UK who had taken their CITB HS&E test for Managers & Professionals in the past two years. We gave them the opportunity to provide their feedback on the test and the subjects covered. From this feedback we made the necessary adjustments to the MAP test to ensure that managers and professionals taking the test understand the risks of working in a construction environment, lead by example, and have the tools to embed and implement health and safety protocols and procedures.
We appreciate your valuable feedback, particularly concerning the perceived complexity of some questions. It's important to note that our questions and content are developed and thoroughly reviewed by qualified HS&E experts with extensive experience in the construction industry, health and safety, and management. We have also worked with CSCS to ensure that the new test questions meet the minimum health & safety knowledge requirements for Managers & Professionals, enabling them to transfer their knowledge into appropriate behaviour on site regardless of their role or the sector they work in.
The new Managers and Professionals test has been created to be relevant to the construction industry, not just specific job roles. The test is about keeping everyone safe on site.
We understand that there has been an increase in the amount of time required to revise in advance of a scheduled test. Due to the volume of new content, we are strongly recommending that candidates spend time revising in advance of their scheduled test to give themselves the best chance of passing. I've done this course 5 times
I've done this course 5 times. Failed all. By one freaking mark!!!It's absolutely ridiculous. They playing with people's lives here. If I fail again. I will probably lose my job. I've got one of the best jobs ever. And because of some stupid test. Iam probably going to lose it. Also doesn't help if you are dyslexic. So thank you CITB for screwing up my life. Spent over £100 already. Been in the building maintenance industry for over 10yrs now. Also they say buy the app it helps!!!Paid £7 just to find out. The app doesn't help with the H&SA. I've got proof on email they sent me saying it doesn't help with the H&SA. Also mock test doesn't help...This all seems to be a money making scheme.

HSE exam took and fail but not told…
HSE exam took and fail but not told what I failed on. How can I correct my mistake if I don't know what I got wrong or maybe I didn't get it wrong 🤔 If my car failed its MOT they tell you what you need to fix before returning to retest maybe this would be a good idea to help us paying customers from repeatedly making the same mistake.

Thanks for your reply however if we were on a building site and made a mistake would the hse say sorry thats wrong try again NO we would be told immediately what we have done wrong. Just proves to me that this is just to make money not to make the workplace better.

The score report you will have received at the end of your test will tell you the areas that require further revision.
Details of the questions you answered incorrectly within the test are not shown on your score report, only the subject areas in which they appeared in. This is because when revising for the test it is important that all candidates review the entire subject areas and not just the individual questions they performed poorly in. This confirms a good, rounded knowledge and understanding, and ensures that those taking the test can keep both themselves and those around them safe.

I've only given 5 stars so this might be read. This is a nightmare, I currently have to be supervised around the site until I have completed this test. This is people lives you are mucking around with. It won't be long before there is a class action against this or something similar, when experienced manager can't get onto thier sites.
As a more positive suggestion why not let people chose 10 sections that relate to their job. And not get people to memorize pointless information that has no relevance to their career paths.
And don't get me started on the tricky questions.
Who the hell do you lot think you are.

Every question has been through a robust writing and reviewing process to ensure that it is fit for purpose, and to ensure that they are reflective of the knowledge that all Managers and Professionals need to have in today’s working environment. We have also worked with CSCS to ensure that the new test questions meet the minimum criteria required. This is to ensure work carried out by a Manager or Professional is carried out safely and without risk to health, with all workers transferring their knowledge into appropriate behaviour on site regardless of their role and the sector they work in.
The new Managers and Professionals test has been created to be relevant to the construction industry, not just specific job roles.
We are taking the feedback received by candidates very seriously and remedial action is being taken where necessary. This includes reviewing the question banks, and revision material associated with the test.

Was a bit dubious about the app as I thought I knew everything but without the app I would have failed miserably. 40%. After using the app everyday for a couple of weeks passed 50/50. Five star rated.

This is a joke
CITB MAP is a joke.
It's as if a couple of politicians sat themselves down in a room one day and said "right, we need to find another scam to make their lives even more difficult and restrictive while making them pay for it" so they came up with this : a compulsory test which is almost impossible to pass except by luck, for which if you do pass you get rewarded by being allowed to work and get to carry a stupid and pointless little card telling the world you know all about diversity and inclusion and the number of sinks there should be in the ladies toilets.
My wife and I both have STEM degrees and neither of us can understand these questions, most of which are so ambiguously worded as to be impossible to interpret.
Many of the questions have several answers which are correct in themselves, but if you don't choose the answer they want you to choose you get it wrong. And to make it even worse, many of the questions also require you to choose two or three answer options which further increases your chance of failure if you get one of the two or three wrong.
This is just another jumping-through-hoops-scam of a government endorsed protection racket to relieve people of their hard earned money by deliberately making the test so hard to pass that people have to re-sit (and re-pay) multiple times at a cost of over £20 a time.
A number of the questions are completely irrelevant if not entirely nonsensical. We are not training to be health and safety specialists after all, we just want to be able to get on with our jobs in peace without all the idiotic PC box ticking rubbish.
I've worked in industry for over 40 years, never had or witnessed a serious accident, and score on average less than 50% on this test at every attempt. The whole thing is a joke and a con.

We have taken onboard your comments regarding the way in which the questions are asked. However, the questions and content were developed by qualified HS&E experts, to ensure that they are relevant and applicable to today’s modern workforce. We have also worked with CSCS to ensure that the new test questions meet the minimum criteria required.
The test is made up of a number of different question types, these include Standard multiple choice, multiple response questions, option selection questions and reasoned judgement questions. This ensures that our test reflects best practice and is fair, valid and reliable. This is why you have experienced questions which require more than one answer.
You refer to the questions being irrelevant. To clarify - the questions are written in this way due to the candidates taking the test having a high level of responsibility within their roles. They have a duty to protect those they manage and even those they don’t. They must understand the risks of working in a construction environment, lead by example, and have the tools to embed and implement health and safety protocols and procedures. The new Managers and Professionals test has been created to be relevant to the construction industry, not just specific job roles.

security was ridiculous i forgot my land yard i was just going to the shop to get a drink and the security guard gave me abuse saying GET UR LAND YARD and said to him it’s in my room he then said again GO GET UR LAND YARD i was perfectly calm but i still got abuse seeing how there the people that’s supposed to keep us safe i didn’t feel safe at all i then asked him will i go to reception to let me in and again nothing but cheek there was no need at all seeing that i’ve only forgot my land yard there’s so much i could tell u about this place but that’s for another time but there was zero need for him to raise his voice at all but no the whole time he was basically yelling at me and as well the other security guard also as i came back he said your an adult now act like one i would expect to hear that from school but i am at college and i think the security should be more professional and diffuse situations not try to get a reaction from people

CITB MAP is a joke
Absolutely disgusting that people's jobs and livelihoods are on the line due to the completely unrealistic testing measures. I'm a student and may potentially lose the job I'm due to start after my degree because the questions are so completely outside of my study area and are completely subjective. Half the time the questions are only right due to the way they've been worded. There's absolutely no reason for the pass rate to be 90% for entry level graduates new in their careers. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

The pass mark for the CITB HS&E test for Managers and Professionals is 90%, we’re sorry you feel this is unrealistic, however the pass mark is the same for all HS&E tests (Managers and Professionals, Operatives and Specialist tests). This ensures consistency across all HS&E tests.
We are here to support the construction industry with a test which is relevant, fit for purpose and enhances the health and safety knowledge of the construction industry. That is our primary focus, it’s simply about keeping people safe.

Stop trying to trick people with…
Stop trying to trick people with misleading questions we need new workers and managers this is not the way to go.
I myself have been in the industry as a manager for 45+ years and passed everything have NVQ but this test I have done mock test after mock test been through the new book but still failed 7 times it’s not about the money and time wasted, it’s the trick questions, the industry needs more workers make some serious changes, this is all wrong and stop replying with a standard response none of you could of ever worked in Construction sad the way the industry going, just money making scheme, greed,
It wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t have 2-3 answers to one question and you have to get all correct so in total there can be 60 answers you have to get right,
Now past on the eighth attempt 😢

If I could give less than 1 star I would. This is the worst online course I have ever witnessed in all my years of working (H&S awareness).
I've studied for hours and hours and have found it absolutely impossible to START the exam. There's a list as long as your arm about rules and restrictions which they then completely contradict. I passed all of the diagnostic checks only to be told there was no sound, I was told to speak to customer service which wasn't open at the time, my exam was therefore cancelled. I then called the next day and the person had no idea what they were doing and gave ridiculous advice completely unrelated to the issue. I managed to rebook and sourced a headset to use, went through all the palaver of downloading the app, codes, checks, sitting in a queue etc. Only to be told I couldn't use a headset and I'd have to cancel. An extremely rude person called me saying that I could use the headset (?) but that I had camera issues.- I did not. She put the phone down on me mid-conversation. The language barrier between us was stressful enough. I spent two hours trying to take the exam last night and was cancelled again. It is a complete farce and money making scheme. They tell you not to have phones and then call you immediately when you try to start the exam. I have spent all week stressed about technical issues rather than focusing on my health and safety knowledge and passing my exam. You only have to read the reviews here to see what a terrible company it is. Avoid.
My new job is now at risk.

Not worth one star
Not worth one star. CITB have really gone too far with this one the MAPS test is horrific. Laura spouting stuff about standards and responsibility isn’t good enough. What about my responsibility to pay my mortgage and feed my kids. Sickening !! All this blather about mental health and CITB pull a trick like this stressing people out it’s truly unbelievable.

The new MAP test is terrible and most…
The new MAP test is terrible and most of the question are not construction based.
Laura you have a job on your hands because your test is trash and a lot of the questions are wrong, whoever put this together has thrown a mismatch of question that are subjective/wrong or worded in such ways that you need to be a scholar to work out what the question is asking, and the spelling mistakes are a joke.
Absolute trash, CITB need to go back to the drawing board and release the pass mark and if it’s above 50% your lying.
All the site managers I have sat with all failed the mock test miserably.
This feels like a push for the SMSTS managers course to be linked with this.

Every question has been through a robust writing and reviewing process to ensure that it is fit for purpose, and to ensure that they are reflective of the knowledge that all Managers and Professionals need to have in today’s working environment. We have also worked with CSCS to ensure that the new test questions meet the minimum criteria required. This is to ensure work carried out by a Manager or Professional is carried out safely and without risk to health, with all workers transferring their knowledge into appropriate behaviour on site regardless of their role and the sector they work in.
We understand that you and your site managers have invested time in revising for the test (having taken a number of mock tests). We wish to reassure you that the revision materials have been made more robust to give our candidates the best chance of passing their test.
Our team are currently in the process of collating and reviewing all feedback received from candidates, and the questions used in the test. Remedial action is being taken where appropriate.

MAP what a joke
MAP what a joke taken twice so far. Last time failed with 88%. Downloaded app done 30 plus tests with an average of 70% pass rate. Question require photo graphic memory rather than using the 35 years site experience I have. What a joke of a test. Tweeked to get more Money out of the buisnesses we work for. Why would I need to know the form number for a RIDDOR. I know to go on HSE website to follow latest guidence and download latest form. Looks like its been setup and tested by people sat in an office rather than working in the real world.
