ThruDark Mountain Pro Insulated Jacket Review

For:
First Impression, there’s no denying that this is a solid jacket. It looks and feels premium AF and has an undeniable identity element. The arm patches and silhouette give it subtle Corps swagger, a quiet nod to the brand’s heritage and representation of a brand founded by members of the armed forces.

It runs large, TD’s broader sizing philosophy I’ve found, but even sizing down still leaves some room, which is likely intentional and designed to accommodate a layering system as well as catering toward individuals with broader, more muscular builds, i.e.; military.

Initially I wanted the black but being sold out led me to go with the oak colour, but actually, looks just as good, if not better.

The warmth to weight ratio is good, and it’s my go to now when the conditions are cold and damp. The synthetic insulation uses PrimaLoft Gold insulation which performs well and retains warmth when wet, and I have found this to be true for light showers, but it does quickly become saturated during a heavy downpour. Obviously in these conditions you would just throw over your hardshell.

Neutral:
Engineered for helmet use, but for activities on the mountains that don’t require a helmet, it’s oversized, although I’ve found that over a hooded mid-layer this is somewhat offset, although a peak might have helped.

PrimaLoft Gold Active is a superior form of insulation, but as a brand that typically sources the highest quality materials, PrimaLoft Gold Active+, the latest innovation might have been the more appropriate choice.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but a stash bag would have been a nice addition.

Given its rugged positioning, I do wonder if abrasion-resistant elbow panels would elevate durability during prolonged mountain use.

Against:
Whilst the main zip and chest pockets are glove-friendly, the side pocketszip pulls are almost unusable, especially in cold conditions wearing gloves. More annoying is that there aren’t any loops to manually add some zipper pull extensions, which I usually do in these scenarios. I get that this is probably to keep the jacket minimalistic and avoid having these catch when layering, but it’s still annoying.

Overall Verdict:
The Mountain Pro is a serious synthetic winter jacket. It delivers excellent warmth to weight performance, relative wet-weather insulation, and a layering-friendly cut designed with purpose. It feels robust, capable, and built for harsh conditions, and I would absolutely feel confident wearing this on exposed mountain tops.
