Formal Complaint Regarding Unlisted Edible Flower on Child’s Dessert
To: Afrikana Restaurant, Islington
From: Bey-sesserina
Date of Visit: Saturday 4th October 2025
Time between 15:30-16-30
Dear Afrikana Islington Management,
I am writing to formally raise a complaint regarding an incident that occurred during my recent visit to your restaurant.
I was accompanied by my daughter and my granddaughter, who is six years old and recently turned six just four weeks ago.
It was our first time dining at Afrikana.
We were drawn in by the food itself and my granddaughter choice to have our meal there because of the chicken and fries, which was the dish selected for her.
It was my first time dining at your restaurant and I selected fries and jollof rice as sides, however, I quickly noticed a thematic tone across the menu that I found distasteful and misaligned with the setting.
This is a matter of my own opinion, but for what could be considered a family orientated environment, it is for this reason where my distastefulness and misalignment comes from.
The incident I wish to highlight occurred during dessert.
My granddaughter was served two scoops of ice cream—presumably the item listed as 'Ice Ice Baby' adorned with a purple edible flower.
This garnish was:
1, Not listed on the menu
2, Not disclosed by staff prior to serving
3, Placed on a child’s dessert, without parental consent or any formal enquiry, regarding the offer of my granddaughter wanting to have this edible flower plated, with her desert.
The server brought the desert and my granddaughter immediately asked about the flower, because it was new to her, the server described it as “decorative” and “edible", then returned to the kitchen area.
I am deeply concerned that:
1, The edible flower was introduced without transparency or consent.
2, It was served to a minor, bypassing the awareness and acknowledgement of 'age restrictions'.
This gesture felt careless and inappropriate, due to the nature and high likely connotations behind the 'edible flower' added to the desert.
It disrupted the integrity of the meal and introduced ambiguity into a moment meant for joy and nourishment.
I instructed my granddaughter not to eat it, and her instinct and facial expression confirmed that the addition was not to her taste, nor was it appropriate.
I request that Afrikana Islington:
1. Review the inclusion of unlisted decorative elements, especially on dishes served to minors.
2. Ensure full menu transparency and staff disclosure regarding all ingredients and garnishes.
3. Consider the cultural and symbolic implications of all items served, particularly those with layered meanings.
This complaint is submitted with seriousness and protective intent. I expect a formal response outlining how this matter will be addressed and what the restaurant 'Africana' will do to fix this.
Sincerely,
Shantel bey
