Cramped, Dingy, Noisy.

A very narrow establishment with almost no space between tables. Private conversations are impossible. The staff are forever banging something, which makes the place sound more like a blacksmith's forge than a café. The loos are quite inadequate (actually there is only one), and when customers are crammed into their tables it is not unusual to see a queue of 3 or 4 women hopscotching outside the sole lavatory. The coffee is good, but the service can be very slow. I wouldn't return to eat, because there are very few savoury items, and sickly chocolates and cakes are not my thing. Very poor management and too little space makes Chococo impossible to recommend.

Gosh, getting a 1 star review for being busy! Well that's a first - we are sorry to hear that you were unhappy with the lack of savoury items but, given we are an artisan chocolate company specialising in all things chocolate, then perhaps we were not the right cafe for you.
We are glad to hear that you enjoyed your coffee though and as we make all our coffees and hot chocolates fresh on a proper coffee machine, that may well account for the noise that you found so offensive.
Our Winchester Chocolate House is not the biggest space but we are an independent business, not a big chain with corresponding big budgets. As you hopefully noticed, we are a chocolate shop with a chocolate cafe at the back of the unit - we are not just a cafe and the space between our tables is no different to other small cafes or indeed any cafe on the Continent I would suggest.
We would love to have a bigger unit further up the High St with more space but we couldnt afford the rent! Our loo is perfectly adequate for customer use and again, we dont have the financial resources or space to turn over valuable floor space to providing more loos! I dont think our customers would expect there to be more than one, so to be honest, am a bit baffled by that comment. Hey ho, we will take heart from your appreciation of our coffee given that sweet things are not your thing!

Do not waste your money.

Don’t use this company! Our daughter sent us a Chococo Honeycombe Easter Egg in the post. Sadly, as many other customers have already pointed out, it was smashed to pieces when we opened the box. Totally ruined. My daughter was very upset, as these are not cheap & emailed the company, providing photos to show the damage. They have responded, basically saying tough. Does anyone know if they can just get away with providing damaged goods through the internet? Surely you should be able to trust that a purchase will be sent in a satisfactory condition, unless you have been told it is substandard when ordering. A very shoddy way to treat your customers.

Dear Mrs Evans, Thank you for your review of the egg that was ordered and despatched after Easter in our sale. I can assure you that the egg was despatched in perfect condition and that we have posted thousands of eggs this year which have arrived in perfect condition. We are sorry to hear that the egg was damaged in transit but as it was a sale item, we dont offer replacements or refunds as it will still taste delicious and we hope you enjoy eating it!

Don’t bother with a subscription!

My daughter bought us a subscription for a chocolate assortment every month. The first box was nice but had quite a few chocolates that we would not have chosen. We’re now on our fourth monthly box and are quite disappointed. Each month, despite the menu card suggesting new flavours, we get the same, quite boring, selection with only one or two different choices. Can’t say we look forward to the box arriving in the post which is a shame!

Thank you for your review - we do try to ensure there is some variety each month but I hope you appreciate that we cannot change the entire range every month! There will be more flavours joining the range as we move into our Spring/Summer collection - the first being our Cream Tea chocolate which is very popular with a layer of raspberry jam on top of a fresh clotted cream and white chocolate ganache. We hope you will enjoy them!

Thank you for your review - if you think chocolate is expensive now, sadly you will be in for a shock by Christmas given how cocoa prices are rocketing and there will be a limit to how much all chocolate companies can absorb the increased costs!. We are very upfront about the weights of all our chocolate products - they are clearly shown on the packaging and highlighted on our website. We will take your comments about the shapes being small on board - perhaps show a hand in any future photos to make their size 100% clear.

Seen their beautiful Easter eggs…

Seen their beautiful Easter eggs recommended on this morning with starfish and turtles inside so order for my partner as I’m away from home for Easter. When he opened it the egg was smashed to pieces. The packaging was perfectly in tact so I’m guessing it was like that before it was posted. Disappointed since it’s a £15 egg and over a fiver for the postage.

As you have ignored the email we sent to you as soon as we spotted this review, I thought I would send it to you again on this platform. If you want to support an indie business, may I suggest you contact the business first about an issue before writing such a negative review and then not ignore the business when they do try to help you!

'Thank you for your recent order for a Milk Chocolate Ocean Egg to be delivered to your partner which arrived yesterday. We were very sorry to see that you posted a review on Trustpilot without getting in touch with us to let us know what had happened and giving us the chance to rectify this for you.

For your partner to have received a broken egg is really sad and clearly disappointing, and certainly not how we want our lovely chocolate to arrive. Please be assured that we don't want any of our customers to be unhappy; it certainly wouldn't have been packed that way, and we'd never knowingly send out damaged chocolates.

We're very sorry that your egg arrived damaged. We have used our plastic-free packaging format for our eggs for a number of years now with only a very small number of damages which are more to do with how the items are handled in transit rather than the fault of the packaging.

We would be happy to send out a replacement egg today via 24h tracked service, or alternatively arrange for a full refund for you, but we would kindly request that you remove the review. There's no need to return the damaged egg; the chocolate is just as delicious despite its less-than-perfect appearance.

Once again, please accept our apologies for the damage sustained and we look forward to hearing from you.'

Very poor quality chocolate Easter…

Very poor quality chocolate Easter eggs. Bad aftertaste
Only bought the eggs because they have been recommended on “This Morning” and others.
I bought 2 for friends and one for myself. I will have to apologise to them.

We are sorry to hear that our signature chocolate wasn't to your taste. To reassure you, it is actually very high quality chocolate made exclusively for us from fine cocoa beans grown in Colombia (our 47% milk chocolate) & Ecuador (our 72% dark chocolate) and both have won Great Taste Awards, so are officially delicious. Our milk chocolate contains less sugar than most milk chocolates and our dark is more aromatic than others. All our chocolate is palm oil-free and most are soya-free too (except our Colombia origin white chocolate) and all are 100% traceable from farm to us and are slave-free which is very important to us. We hope that you find chocolate that better suits your palate.

Refuse cash payments

Similar to other comments I have seen on here although having been regular customers for several years, mainly at the Winchester branch, we are now unable to use cash payments. We will not be returning and I'm aware of others who now refuse to buy from them. According to a recent statistic I heard on TV just a few days ago there are still more than 3 million people in the UK (I guess mostly older) who do not have bank cards so how are they expected to pay?

Tasty chocolates

I have been to their cafes on many occassions. They are not cheap, but the chocs (and hot chocolates) are delicious and clearly properly made. I like to get the darker hot chocolates, 80% maybe with some salted caramel. Delicious. And they always add a chocolate on the side. My wife likes to add a scoop of their ice cream in her hot chocolate.

Nice but maybe not worth the price

Biggest let down is that they use royal mail to deliver instead of a delivery company that actually delivers on time. Ordered as an anniversary gift and came 3 days late. Not all of the chocolates are our cup of tea, but there are some really good ones in the selection box. The brownies are super dense and rich... Almost more like fudge than a brownie. Really tasty but you can't eat much in one sitting. Overall I do think they're a little overpriced for what you get, but as a treat or gift they're probably worth it.

first class chocolates

Good quality chocolates can be a divisive subject and from some of the reviews i have read its clear to me some people are being picky and others should stick to cadburys,my own experiance with chococo has been brilliant,first class and professional,i am a massive fan,keep up the great work guys.

Worth the money - delicious

Wow. Unbelievably good chocolates, some of the best I have ever had. Nice range of flavours and unusual combinations. Ordered online and they turned up well-packaged. Aiming to visit the Winchester store soon!

Never again

I have used Chococo before. Their chocolate is alright, not on the same league as Alain Ducasse, Leonidas or Neuhaus, but sort of a hippy Hotel Chocolat.
I had seen they had problems with their deliveries at the time of the mail strikes and that they were seeking a different courier, but I made an error when I bought my Easter egg with them in March 2023, delivered by Royal Mail.
The order was expected to arrive by 4/4/23 but it is now 13/4/23 and it has not arrived. It continues to be living its own Groundhog day experience at a Royal mail centre. The Easter egg was a present so I had to arrange for an alternative gift.
Once Chococo were informed, I found their response uncompromising, saying that they had to work together with their courier and that I would have to wait until after 19/4/23 before they would issue me any sort of refund. This added salt to injury.
Obviously, I will never order from them again as they are not reliable and would rather spend extra money to get worthy customer service.

Amazing chocolate and amazing customer service

Most importantly, the chocolate is amazing. Some of the best chocolate I've ever had!

Another thing to mention is that my egg arrived totally smashed up... it must have happened during transit, which was a shame. I got an email asking for feedback, and I just mentioned it to Chococo telling them they may want to speak to the courier... A customer rep got back to me offering a full refund, which I wasn't expecting at all.

Great experience, and will certainly be a returning customer.

Avoid total rip off

My husband bought me a £30 Easter egg which when I opened it smashed into a 1000 pieces, it must have left the store like that as the paper wrapping was tight around the product so it didn’t rattle the box. A total waste of money, I would rather have had a cheap whole one from Asda.

From a chocolate taster

I am a chocolate lover; and I am enjoying trialling some of the best chocolates available. Being a lifetime Dorset resident, I found that I should give Chococo a try. A small trial box didn't really appeal too much but thought I would give them the benefit of doubt and took out a subscription for the large 25 chocolate box. Certainly I can agree the packaging is special (but at what cost) whilst the chocolates have very thin cases and break easily when attempting to remove them from the box (in spite of the warning that the dividers can be removed which rather detracts from the visual appeal). The chocolates themselves were just very average - quite sweet and with too much filling and too little chocolate coating.
But what really let the side down were the 'menu illustrations' which my wife and I found of little use.
I am sorry Chococo, these artisan chocolates are really 'all show and no go' for us.
