I purchased a PRS kit from Coban Guitars and dealt with Mark. He was really helpful in deciding which kit to buy. The kit was really good quality.

Mark even sent me a replacement veneer after I damaged the one that came with the guitar. Couldn’t recommend enough

I haven’t made the guitar yet but they get a low score purely on customer service.
There were no instructions included with the kit. When I contacted them they emailed me a pdf. I asked for a paper copy (as advertised) and they said I’d get a lot of advice online etc…but they’d get around to it. I also asked for a slightly larger piece of veneer to match the headstock to the body (like a lot of the online users had done) but was told it was for testing finish…so much for the online advice. Again they said they’d have a look but I’ve never heard a cheep on either count since.
It would appear it’s all about the sale then they don’t want to be bothered!!!

I'm impressed by the rapid response to my order, how quickly it was delivered and the quality of the kit overall. A nice bit of Ash for the body, everything looks high quality.

It looks great. But haven’t started colouring or construction, but if it’s like other Coban DIY guitars I’ve done it will be spot on,

I ordered a DIY kit (SG5), my first time purchase discount never went through (an internet issue).
I mailed the admin team and recieved a reply almost immediately and everything was sorted out with no fuss or bother, great service and the guitar is excellent value.

I had a problem with my order which was entirely my fault but when I emailed Coban, Mark came straight back to me and is getting it sorted for me. Excellent service and great product.

Simple, easy and reliable

Wood was excellent but the electrics are not working properly. It’s a PJ setup but it looks like only the Jazz pickup is working. Plus all the knobs only work in the opposite direction. Can’t work out what the actual problem is. This was a non solder guitar so should just plug in and play.

It arrived very quickly and it seemed like everything was there, though there was no inventory so it was impossible to check. The quality of the two main pieces — the body and neck — appeared to be very good. The instructions are terrible. They cover too many models, and none in enough detail. The company were very responsive to any enquiries, but all they advised was to look at online tutorials. There is not a specific one for the Coban, nor has the company produced one. I was on my own regarding prep but found a guy at North West guitars who was invaluable during the entire build. The main problem I had was that when staining the body there were several patches, one right along the bottom edge, where the stain wouldn’t take. Again Coban were very responsive and made a number of suggestions, which ultimately didn’t work. The most plausible reason I can think of is that the alder wood was contaminated, probably by something oil-based, before it got to me and ultimately there was nothing I could do to cure it. The only fix would have been a new body, but Coban were never forthcoming in that, so I just had to go with what I had. I had to cut the headstock to shape, which I didn’t find too difficult, but I’d be wary if you’re not confident with a jigsaw and shaping a hard wood. I oiled the neck with lots of coats of Tru-Oil gun stock oil and that worked perfectly. Final set-up was much trickier than I’d expected, but then the bridge and saddle aren’t terribly good quality. After a lot of frustration and fiddling trying to get the action and intonation right, I had to fit a new bone nut. I also bought a different coloured pick guard, so they threw in the nut, and a spare, but then the guard didn’t fit! I bought a guard elsewhere and it fits perfectly. The nut did the trick and allowed me to sort the tuning, action and intonation, but intonation is unstable on the G, I suspect because of the quality of saddle. The supplied strings are awful and I wish I’d never even bothered with them but I was keen to see how it worked out of the box with the supplied parts. The less said about the supplied lead the better. Over all, it’s pretty good for the price but a few niggles that could have been avoided. I’m still cheesed off about the contaminated body, mainly because the stain looks lovely on the 80% of the body where it took and I think Coban could have done more to resolve that. Otherwise, it’s not too bad, especially when you consider the price. That said, it wouldn’t have ended up as a half-decent guitar had I not been so dogged and sorted out the bits I needed to myself.

Delivered on time (before time really). Quality kit, decent wood/veneer. All Coban kits I have made have been well routed and fitted together snuggly. Looking forward to working on this one.

Ordered at lunchtime and the guitar kit was delivered the next day. Really nice kit that can be stained or painted. Looking forward to seeing how it turns out.

I bought a Telecaster kit and assembled and completed it over a long weekend into a really descent musical instrument. The only challenges are getting a snug fit between the neck and body by sanding the neck and carving the headstock shape.

The pickups, pots and tuners are very basic but enough to start with and I’ll probably upgrade them in the future.

The instructions are generic for all kits so time and care must be taken. It’s given me the confidence to tackle a set neck kit next.
