Unethical Business Practices - BEWARE
The store at 275 Seventh Ave told me they took my insurance, but other stores near me did NOT. That was the first in a long series of lies, deceptive marketing practices, and price gouging. Employees of this store are guilty of unethical business practices, which can be seen dating back 9 years 1 star reviews. I doubt the veracity of any 5 star reviews. Don’t purchases at this store. The selection of frames is poor, and the prices are padded.
1. I called my insurance company, and no claim has been made for over 30 days, which is unusual, as stores file quickly for reimbursement. I received an insurance “benefit” in the form of discounts, but if Cohen’s used my insurance, it would be used up. I don’t recall anyone taking my insurance info. I’m pretty sure the “insurance discount” was a sales tactic, achieved by padding the retail.
2. The frames cost $399. I was given a hard sell, and regretted my choice the next day. It takes a ruthless person desperate for commission for the “hard sell”. A good establishment does not push, because you could end up with an unhappy customer. An ethical business cares about customer satisfaction. This shop is happy to fight with you post-sale regret. When I called the next day, I was told I could not return the frames, I could only exchange them. They have no selection! I was told they would order frames of my choice. My choice retails for $214. Factoring in the “insurance” discount ($299), they refused to tell me the difference in the price, and if there is a potential refund due me on the difference. They told me the frames I saw online are probably counterfeit. No, they're not. That's the price to match.
3. I placed my order on a Saturday, and had reservations the next morning, a Sunday. The second issue I had was blue block filters for $349. Clearly an upsell after I read more later. I was told the order for my lenses was already sent to the lab, and the lenses were cut. No cancellation was possible. On a Sunday? I wasn’t given all the info on the blue block filters, like the fact that they weirdly reflect purple. They said they could change them to clear, but they would be less effective? They had discounted those too, but my bill has one lump discount that’s not itemized. All the discounts were calculated on a Post It. I want a refund on the filters, but don’t know the actual cost. They guaranteed I would love them. I don't! Refund me. They gave me free contact lenses instead. I was buying new lenses and frames because I can no longer wear contacts. What business in today’s market has such a rigid no return policy. It’s a “worst practice’.
4. I picked up my new frames, which was 2 pairs. I had ordered 1 new frame and two sets of RX lenses with extras. The bill was $1746 before the discounts, and $1249 after. I have no idea what I paid per item, because the discounts were grouped together. They didn’t set the lenses flush front; they protrude with sharp edges from the front. I was told it’s my prescription. I didn’t think so, and talked to several opticians. The quality of their lab work is strictly mass market default lens positioning. They could have polished the sharp edges. They could have manually calculated the bevel position, so the lenses sit flush across the front and don’t stick out. UNACCEPTABLE for these prices.
5. I have had nothing but defensive explanations for the cost difference of the frames, the inability to stop the order of the blue block filters, and now the lens positioning. I've been GASLIGHTED by 2 employees there. Also hard selled, up-selled, price gouged, given phony insurance discounts, offered phony discounts on padded pricing, and given free gifts to shut me up. They have delivered inferior quality lab work. Every time I called the store, I was told to come in and discuss it in person. This is a really bizarre tactic, where they outnumber you.
6. I’ve been ignored by the corporate head of customer service, Laura V. She didn’t return 2 voicemails and 1 email. Laura and Leah, I want the cheaper frames comped, to make up for the bad quality lab work on the lenses, and the cost of the blue block filters removed from my bill. The non-itemized discounts at the bottom of bill by Mercy are NOT my problem; you don’t do business this way in retail. I want the list price of these 2 line items refunded. Refund me to my satisfaction, and we can settle this.
