I have no idea how it works, and I hate AI stuff in general.
I note the frustration of other reviewers here, but simultaneously note that they are not native speakers.
I took it online in England today (19.06.26); I'm English. I'm also a qualified editor of English with some copywriting experience as well so of course I'd hope to do better than the average speaker.
This said, the 90-minute test really puts you through your paces with its carefully-devised 'Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking' elements of English comprehension. These tasks are timed so you have to complete them in appropriate time but as accurately as possible, and with the specified number of words they ask for (for example, 90 words describing a room for rent). I'm guessing that if someone doesn't do these exactly points are deducted.
But they for example also ask you to write extremely varied types of prose (off the top of your head, timed), and to read different passages and deduce answers to questions from these.
So in my view it will be hard for a lot of non-native people in terms of vocabulary, comprehension, creative writing, and required speed of response. I got 84/100 so I'm delighted - but I believe it does reflect my academic expertise in the English language...

I have just made this test, and it is extremely inaccurate. I have analysed it in detail and captured both the questions and the results. One side I have found a factual wrong calculation on Listening count, the writing evaluation looks to be based on extremely limited algorithms (difficult to believe that full size answers with zero grammar or orthography errors and perfectly adapted to the contexts, value a 59 %. But the worst part, I believe that the voice recognition on Speaking did not understand my accent (British English living permanently in England for 14 years with traces of Spanish accent). I have a Cambridge C1 which obtained about 9 years ago, then 3.5 years ago I made IELTS Academic and had an overall 8, and this test gives me 62/100 when my English has only improved since my previous tests as I live in England, work permanently in English and I am in the education sector. In conclusion, I will need to sit the IELTS again and have a proper evaluation and valid certificate of my English level.

It's such a clownshow

First, the reading, it's all AI text, got some random sentences which were incorrect and stuffed with mistakes. The listening part, some AI models are extremely difficult to hear and aren't totally accurate to all questions asked. The writing is a bit scuffed, it has to EXCEED the minimum words count I found, anything under said word count will be prcessed as invalid, greatly lowering your score(s) and at last, the speaking, this had me wheezing, the speaking might be the dumbes part as its AI model is completely broken beyond repair, I've been living in London for the past 6+ years, communication and speaking an excessive amount every day are both part of my job, according to the test I scored 31% . EF, please, if you guys are that determined, PLEASE look into your terrible AI modules.

The part where a woman was speaking with a heavy British or Australian accent was absolutely not understandable for me. That was enough to lower my scores a whole lot.

Waste of 90 minutes, lagged out and failed to process the submitted test, then the tab proceeded to crash. Can't claim my results using the email I registered with. Avoid until their backend tech is fixed.

I tried the 90 min test, everything was fine with internet connection. After submitting the test I waited almost 30 minutes in a loading page, then the test got cancelled!

This is supposed to be a bad joke.

All tests are terminated prematurely by the site operator or are not displayed at all. Hence even native speakers only achieve beginner level.

You guys, please maintain your site properly or close it.

I tried twice to do the 90 min test, the speaking section is the last section, when you reach that section, they show you a message "This site works best in Chrome", when you lost 1 hour of your time, the platform never recognize my microphone, and I tested mi mic and earphones before; at the second try I used Chrome, but, I had the same Issue, the platform never recognized my microphone, even though I finished the test, and I continue waiting for my certificate

Just did a 15 minute self-test in English on their website, and while not being a native English speaker, I got a suspiciously low score for having used English for both written and verbal communication throghout my entire professional and most of my personal life. Receiving my score along recommended courses provided by EF leads me to suspect that they're deliberately under-reporting skill levels to attract students.

Easy, fast, and free to use. They give you an opportunity to have your certificate immediately after you finish your test. I wish they would expand their test to be the same as IELTS but easier and more affordable.
