At Seascape Aquatech, we are developing the first AI-driven, autonomous robotic oyster farming equipment. We were not selected to receive an investment from Found Capital at this time; they provided a thoughtful and detailed analysis of why we didn't meet their investment fund guidelines. Primarily, we were too capital-intensive ($2.5M), and the development time was too long (2 years) to develop an unproven physical robotic technology. They doubted we could transfer the machine vision technology and telemetry we had developed for our existing land-based tractor for use in the water with a boat.

Our revenue forecasts were not strong enough. We only included the use of our technology on our own farm and three others out of 8,000 globally but failed to convey that once the technology works on a 10-acre plot, it can work everywhere. It could be 30, 300, or 3,000 farms.

We are solely focused on developing our physical robotic technology for oysters. Still, the machines can be adapted for clams, mussels, scallops, kelp, and seaweed. We failed to include any of these revenue drivers in our pro forma.

We also failed to point out that our technology has a dual purpose: for its massive oyster production and lower operating costs, the perfect deep cup oysters can be sold for consumption. In contrast, the other, less-than-perfect oysters can be used to regenerate oyster reefs and clean waterways worldwide.

We agree that developing physical AI robotic technology as a pioneer in a new industry is challenging. Still, in 20 years, these machines will be everywhere, growing low-cost oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, kelp, and seaweed for millions of people and cleaning waterways. We want to be the cornerstone of this emerging technology.

Whilst we didn't move forward with the investment, I found the response and process with Found Capital one of the best in the industry. We received prompt feedback twice on our deck and thoughtful comments and understanding on our proposition.

As others have said, firstly you get a response (unusual be itself) but also constructive feedback when the answer is 'no'. This doesn't have to be (and wasn't) extensive, but is enough to facilitate a focus on what investors are looking for. Very helpful.

Most VCs send generic rejections. Found Capital took the time to explain what impressed them (rapid MVP, strategic partnerships) AND what gave them pause (very early stage, need for more validation). That level of thoughtfulness is rare.
