Very quick response. The selected contractors provided a site visit within a few days and a proposal soon after.

It was so quick and efficient. Within a few minutes of posting my proposed job, I had a couple of trades people message me. I liked being able to read the reviews of each tradie before having them come give me a quote.

As a business/tradie, STAY AWAY... No communication. Impossible to cancel, no accountability. They take your money and won't let you cancel. We've been trying for 3 months to cancel, it seems impossible to do so... Don't sign up in the first place

Had a dodgy tradie found on the hipages site do some brick pointing for me. He did very low quality work and was supposed to issue an invoice but insisted on cash payment and never issued an invoice.
Complained to hipages and it never amounted to anything, so this trades person continues to operate on the website doing sub-standard work.
Doesn't seem as if hipages cares about the quality of the people on their site, as long as they keep raking in the fees.

Remember watching those A Current Affair episodes about dodgy tradies — the ones ripping off vulnerable customers, overcharging, disappearing, and then coming back with excuses when challenged?

Now imagine those same types of operators having access to a central platform where they can continuously pick up new work — and where the system that’s supposed to protect customers doesn’t actually do that.

That has been my experience with hipages.

I engaged a plumber through the platform to complete what was meant to be a straightforward, clearly defined service: conduct testing and provide a formal report. The report wasn’t an optional extra — it was the entire purpose of the job. Payment was made, confirmation was provided, and follow-up messages requesting a paid invoice were sent immediately after.

From that point:

* The agreed timeframe (“early next week”) came and went
* Communication stopped or became inconsistent
* Only after delays — and after I flagged escalation — was I told additional payment was required to release the report

This was never raised at the time of payment. Not once. The position only changed after the deadline had passed.

When I escalated this to hipages, I expected at minimum a fair and thorough review of the evidence. Instead:

* The response focused on the absence of a formal written quote, despite a clear sequence of messages and actions showing agreement and payment
* Key issues like delays, non-responsiveness, and withholding of deliverables were not meaningfully addressed
* The outcome effectively accepted the tradie’s version of events, despite contradictions in the timeline

What’s more concerning is this:

The tradie holds a relatively low rating (around 3.9 stars), which clearly indicates prior negative customer experiences. However, hipages does not provide access to the underlying negative reviews — and when I specifically requested this information to support a Fair Trading complaint, I was explicitly told it would not be released unless compelled by a regulator.

So as a customer, you can see there are problems — but you are not given access to the information that would allow you to properly assess the risk.

Even after raising a formal complaint and outlining these issues, the tradie remains active on the platform.

That’s the part that should concern anyone using this service.

Because at that point, it’s no longer just about one bad experience — it raises questions about how effectively the platform is protecting customers, and whether enough weight is given to patterns of behaviour.

I’ll be pursuing this matter further with NSW Fair Trading / Building Commission.

In the meantime, here’s what I did instead — and I’d strongly recommend others do the same:

* Searched Google directly for **leak detection specialists** in my area
* Filtered to the **top-rated providers** and removed any with fewer than ~20 reviews
* Took the top ~10 and sent a **standardised email request** outlining the exact scope of work
* Compared responses based on clarity, scope, and fixed pricing

Outcome:

* Secured a **specialist (not a generalist)** within 24 hours
* Received a **clear, itemised quote upfront**
* The work was completed within **2 days**
* A full report was delivered **the next day (over a weekend)**
* Total cost was **less than half** of what I had already paid through hipages

That contrast speaks for itself.

This isn’t about one job — it’s about how situations like this are handled, and what that means for everyone else using the platform.

My experience with Hipages has been extremely disappointing. The service is overpriced for what you actually get, and the quality of the leads is incredibly poor. Most of them were either irrelevant, unresponsive, or clearly not serious customers.
As a professional, I ended up wasting both time and money chasing jobs that went nowhere. It feels like you’re paying for leads that have little to no real value.
On top of that, customer support was not helpful at all when I raised these concerns. There was no real effort to resolve the issues or improve the situation.
I would not recommend this platform to anyone looking for reliable work. There are far better ways to generate business without dealing with this level of frustration

WATCH OUT HI PAGES STRATEGY, SCAM, SCAM, SCAM.

Not informing clients that tradies charge for the job leads to pocket money.

Just a warning to tradies using HiPages. They charge up to $200 for job leads that are often not genuine, wasting tradies’ time—especially in the current economic climate. Although they claim leads go to only 3 tradies, in reality many more show up to quote the same job. Customers are completely unaware that tradies are being charged for these leads, which mainly benefits HiPages rather than the tradespeople paying for them.

Using hipages is an easy way to connect with tradespeople. I've used hipages a couple of times and have only had positive outcomes. Will definitely use again.

I have always gone to Hipages to find tradies who are available when I need them. Hipages always provides at least three tradies within an hour or so of my logging the job. I have found the businesses to be professional and they do high quality work. It’s a very convenient way to get trade work done.
