We hired John Reed from JSR Design Group in Boca Raton for architectural design and to finalize floor plans and produce construction documents for our home remodel. We came with a clear vision and a rough plan already drawn.
From the start, John was disorganized and talked more than he listened. After signing the contract and paying a $4k deposit, we received a first draft that completely ignored everything we'd discussed. John admitted he'd "lost" his notes and decided to create something entirely different.
When we asked him to work from our original plan, he refused—later admitting he simply didn't like it. Instead, he kept throwing what he called "curveballs." That's the last thing you want when you're carrying two mortgages.
After four weeks and four unusable drawings, we fired him. Suzanne offered a $164 refund of our $4,000 deposit, insisting the curveballs were "billable hours."
Even our GC, who originally recommended John, was shocked by the lack of deliverables.
We've since found an excellent architect and are back on track. My advice: don't choose JSR just because they're cheaper. Do your due diligence and trust your gut.
