Patience is a Virtue
At 86 my right hip replacement was a ‘last ditch’ decision to allow me to maintain my independence. Having had surgery on my left hip five years previously with a fast recovery, I was optimistic.
Complications with an unstable knee on the same side as the weak hip was worrying and in retrospect preparatory information on strengthening that joint prior to surgery would probably have been very useful.
Prior to surgery I was not offered access to any of the Physio or dietary preparation described by other patients, except for pain control, which was re-assuring.
I still had a pre-surgery exercise programme that I was given prior to my first hip replacement, and I utilised that.
Post surgery I’m continuing with the exercise program introduced while in Rehabilitation.
At eight weeks the leg is proving slower than I would like to strengthen, as I’m still dependent on a walking stick, but encouragingly it now seems to be improving gradually and I am able to drive.
I guess I just have to be more patient this time.
