When Colin Goodman first rang to suggest a barrel of Irish whiskey I was hesitant. Over the years I've had several attempts to sell whisky barrels to me and I'd rejected them all after investigating their companies or because they were pushy. Colin and Starling Wines, after I researched them and took my time, were very different . After a while and no pushy sales talk and a full explanation of the whole buying and selling process, I bought a barrel. After several months, I was invited to join Colin and his colleagues, and fellow whiskey purchasers on a one day trip to visit two Irish Whiskey distillers, one of whom pointed to where my barrel was being stored. No attempts were made to sell us any more barrels. Later I bought one from the other distillery and another from the first. Colin originally told me I should expect an annual return of 10 to 12%. When, after more than a year, I asked him to sell one, he did. My annualised return was just over 19%. Lucky, I reckon, but it was, as promised but not guaranteed, in double figures.

My recent experience is dealing with Holly Johnson (Office Manager) facilitating the document loading (invoice / certificates ) into the Portal set up for me. This is a good transparent holding base/Portal for purchases made over the years. Holly is very helpful and responds in a timely manner.

​If you look into their Irish ownership options, there is an added bonus: the company hosts a weekend whisky tasting at the distillery. Getting to see your actual barrel with your own name on it in person makes for a great few days out. Tip: I’d suggest finding and checking your barrel first before joining the whisky tasting!

My husband and I have been investing with Starling for a couple of years now and throughout that time Colin Goodman (our Broker) has been a delight. Not only is he very knowledgeable but he is also friendly, efficient, and provides a fabulous service. He keeps us up to date on the latest recommended investments, provides us with all of the information we need to enable us to make informed decisions.

We were lucky enough to go on a trip to Dublin to visit The Boann & Pearce Lyon Distilleries where we met the extended Starling Team, who are fun & friendly and also very knowledgeable. We also met other investors on the trip which gave us that added confidence to keep investing.

We have a great relationship with Starling due to their exceptional service, trusted advice and transparency.

My personal review as follows...

I have been with Starling Wines and Spirits now for 3 years and have built up a healthy portfolio of whiskey casks, to which I add to every year.

I have had excellent dealings with Starling and trust their advice over the years (Paul and Colin). In the early stages, Starling advise was underpinned by me speaking to the Distilleries' as well who were very engaging.

If any of you go on 'YOUTUBE' you can watch a short video called 'Starling wines and spirits distillery tour to Boann and Pearse Lyon' which will give you a good insight and indication to the professionalism of Starling. I hasten to add both distilleries I have invested in.

Each cask you get a certificate with cask number and date and 5 years storage and insurance and a Starling Website Portfolio.

After that 5-year period you can sell (or before but suggest wait 3 years min) where Starling takes over, or keep in storage at a small premium year on year, that is up to you what you wish to do.

Later this year I will be undertaking a distillery tour in Ireland all arranged by Starling as part of their business strategy, something I should have done a year or so back.

In summary, I am very happy with my investments, advise and projected growth of casks, so much so I have a friend who has also invested in the last 2 months.

If anyone wishes to speak to me (as a reference) then I will gladly do so, but you will need to speak to Starling who will arrange my number to be passed to you and a time of call / date agreed.

Everyone connected is very knowledgeable about the business, the process and everyone always takes time to explain things. A really easy company to do business with. A pleasure when they ring up, always the calls are scheduled to fit in to your busy life. I knew nothing about whiskey before, the company guide you the whole way through it.
