It’s basically like hiring a mini focus group that actually tells you the truth—and seeing people talk through your site in real time is way more valuable than asking friends or colleagues who are trying to be nice.

Ugly Baby is a fantastic service that I use all the time as a serial small business entrepreneur to test marketing copy with consumers. I have new business ideas all the time, and my first step is usually to throw together a landing page and test conversion rate from ad-driven page views to some CTA (e.g., clicks on "buy now") on a modest budget of a few hundred dollars. Before Ugly Baby, I would run a draft of the landing page by my wife and perhaps a friend or two to refine it before spending money directing traffic to it. Often conversion would be poor and I would have no idea if it was because the product/service was difficult to understand from the marketing copy or because there the product/service truly didn't have any demand in the market. My routine has now changed to have ~10 unique website reviewers on the Ugly Baby platform try to use my landing page and provide feedback on the efficacy of my marketing copy. Doing this has saved me hundreds of dollars in wasted spend on new-idea evaluation!
