Wish I never, ever signed up.
I don't even remember how many years I was a customer but I wish I never, ever signed up.
Customer service is horrible and absolutely useless. By their responses, it's obvious the "customer service" reps don't even read the questions. They sh!t out canned answers that are completely irrelevant to anything I stated. I can't call and talk to anyone competent, or that will even bother listening.
The last straw was "updating" my credit card. The card expiration date was updated at Backblaze but I still got constant notices to update the card. No charge was made, my bank said no charges were ever submitted or denied. I have used the updated card online and in person for a 1.5 months and only backblaze screws up. Backblaze reps said they can't do anything about anything and it's my problem only. Nice. You'd think someone with basic brain function would say "let me get you someone that can further assist you to correct this".
I signed up with idrive. I actually spoke to knowledgeable reps when I had questions about their service. They check up to see that I'm satisfied. It's even cheaper (not even including the switch discount) than Backblaze with better features and functionality. They have customer service that actually helps customers.
I was using my trial you see
I was using my trial you see. Now I am glad I didn't pay for it.
What happened was I got three quarters of my data backed up, and then their system gave me an error.
Contacted support, they said I had to cancel and start over. So another three days just to back up my data.
Their privacy statement is suspect too. I set my own backup backup password just to be safe.
Yeah, It's unlimited backup but they don't care about you or your data. If you read their official statements they say, yeah, we lose money, but we make it up on users who do not use their accounts.
One word : terrible.
Cheap, but payment issues could mean data loss
Very cheap cloud storage for backups.
I store my encrypted backups on Backblaze B2. I spend about $5/year for about 100G. It's so incredibly cheap.
Minus one star for payment issues. My biggest fear is that I'll have all of my data deleted if my credit card autopay fails due to expiration or if it gets blocked for some reason and I don't notice it.
Backblaze really needs to allow their customers to prepay and maintain a balance. I'd happily prepay for a year of service if I could top-up my account knowing that my data won't get deleted due to a missed payment.
But that's not an option. They delete all your data if you miss a payment and don't notice it for 21 days.
So I store my backups on two different cloud providers. Backblaze is one of the two.
Backblaze terrible experience
I am afraid i wished i'd read the other backblaze reviews before i used them, but their advertising made it look easy and hassle free. Five years later i had to do my first restore having lost some data, not only does it then tell you that the files are probably too big so ideally you need to pay for it, then it couldn't find what I needed i.e. 5 years worth of photographs. They continually, as other said, send you into a vortex of help that keeps repeating itself and ultimately denying backblaze is at fault. I wouldn't recommend them at all!
The greatest & cheapest backup solution
Under no circumstances use backblaze as…
Under no circumstances use backblaze as your only backup. Its not simple at all transfer all data from an inactive computer no longer working to a new one and backblaze automatically purges all files after 30 days which means that I have now lost all my old data on my old computer. Be warned
The Backblaze app lied to me for 7 months
For 7 months the Backblaze app lied and told me I was fully 100% backed up, but when I tried to restore a file there were no files newer than 7 months. Logs said the files were backed up, the client reported that the files were backed up, but nothing newer than 7 months showed up in the restore list. Backblaze support was no real help. I would have thought they would want to get to the bottom of the problem, but they basically said "there is an issue that can occur with deduplication logic, but it is resolved in the newer client". Needless to say, I had to stop using Backblaze, as a backup solution that tells you you are backed up for 7 months when you are not, cannot be trusted with your data.
Just know good for pets or anything
Just know good for pets or anything . Save your cash 😭
Backblaze is one of those schizophrenic…
Backblaze is one of those schizophrenic services that is so simple and brilliant on one hand, yet maddeningly frustrating on the other. For starters, when it works, it works. It's simplicity leads to an elegant backup of unlimited data and does so without a drain on your system. Yes, there is a personal limitation of one computer in your household, but that should not deter you from using it, if you plan your home computer setup and usage properly.
Now for the maddening part.... if you EVER need assistance whatsoever, the tech support staff is the ABSOLUTE WORST. First, you can only get tech support via chat or emails. Secondly, they will NOT read what you write as your problem or what you've done to rectify the situation, and will only give you a copy/paste response, and attempt to shove it down your throat or otherwise approach, even if you've already stated that that stated "solution" has already been done and does not work. The tech support staff and the tech leaders, offer absolutely ZERO assistance beyond the cut/paste response, offer absolutely no troubleshooting, and will actually turn around and blame you for the problem. I've had this happen on multiple occasions, so it is systemic and pervasive within the support group. Fortunately, I was able to find the real answers elsewhere online, no thanks to the unhelpful support staff.
My experience with them has been…
My experience with them has been overall very positive. Their software works well, but can be slow
No product R+D or improvements for…
No product R+D or improvements for years probably.
- app shows backup size like "273,384 MB". Really, this can't show my in GB? devs can't find the human readable output function apparently, or have given up.
- "First backup will take a few hours or weeks" Who is going to wait a week to make a backup.
- haven't even tried a restore yet, but the bad reviews here don't look good and that is the main goal.
impossible to remove account
impossible to remove account - following their instructions sends you back to the start - kafka frustration
bad customer service - bot or wait weeks
avoid at all cost
Horrible service
Horrible service. Multiple times a day it comes up with an error message that the service needs to needs to be installed. I install according to their instructions and the next day is a repeat.
Customer service is through email! Really??? Trying to solve a problems takes weeks and it doesn't get solved.
You cannot remove your credit card from your account page even though you have paid for the service.
Steer clear!!!
Steer Clear of Backblaze - Unethical, Unreliable, and Rude
I have been emailing back and forth with Backblaze support regarding ongoing serious support issues for more than a month. As one example, last month the company signed me up for a second paid plan (without my request or knowledge) even though I only need the one plan I have. Though I paid for an annual plan in December 2020, the company will not allow me to remove my credit card (which they will try to use to renew my plan in December 2021) from the account. In order to remove my card from their account, I have been told in writing that I need to cancel the plan I have paid for. On a final note, I have been unable to back up any of my files for two days. Their system has shown the message "Backblaze is undergoing maintenance" for 48 hours now, and I have yet to receive a response to two requests for information about when their system will be up and running again. The email responses I have received over the past month could be used in a master class in how to alienate paying customers. Truly some of rudest, most arrogant and condescending support staff I have ever encountered.
Update: I am on day 16 of no Backblaze updates. I have no backup system. The sluggish email responses I get from Backblaze suggest I might need to get a PhD in system administration in order to implement a byzantine, time-consuming workaround for their shortcomings.
garbage
steer clear from this *hitty service, I opened an account and was unable to activate the 2fa(which is required in this site), contacted their support which was both useless and pathetic, just glad I found out before backing up my data there and paying for their *hitty product and service
Not going well
Not going well. At first just too slow. I have the fastest internet Xfinity provides and still was backing up just a few gig per day. (I have 4.8T of data so that wasn't going to be ok). Upgrade yesterday. So excited. Woke up this morning and my hard drive had been "ejected" during my sleep so nothing backed up. Reconnected and let it run all day. Came home to a dark screen frozen MacBook Pro. Had to do a reboot and saw Backblaze had only backed up 87 MB before downing my entire computer. My computer was just fine before Backblaze was on it.
Extremely cheap cloud storage
Extremely cheap cloud storage. That's it. Of course you have to have some technical ability but I've never found a cheaper solution than their B2 cloud storage.
I was disappointed how clunky to restore
I was disappointed how clunky it is to restore from backup. download a Zip? really? even for a small restore that is a ton of data and time. then the Zip doesn't come down clean and all Backblaze says is to blame the Zip utility. No help.
compatible tool
I like that Backblaze is a compatible backup tool and maybe every user has an opinion whatever it was positive or negative, but tons of services and tools are there on the market, you can go with Syncthing,Gs Richcopy360, Carbonite, or whatever you like but Backblaze still one the best
Great backup system & customer service
Firstly, I have no affiliation with Backblaze other than I have used their software solution for a few years (since Mozyhome and Crashplan changed their offering and costs). I am based in the UK and have just over 10TB backed up across a number of disks (internal and external). A couple of weeks ago, I had a catastrophic computer failure so I needed to restore all my data (fortunately I always expect the worst so had multiple physical backups) - but I thought it would be a good time to test the restore process. I wanted to restore 2TB of files so I went online and set up the process, having to split the request down into 5 or so chunks due to file size. Within 24 hours, I was notified that the backup was ready and I was able to restore all my files. Winmerge showed that everything had downloaded correctly. I've also used their customer support team regarding a billing enquiry (when reinstalling Backblaze, I didn't realise I had to inherit backup state to avoid new fees) - my issue was answered and resolved quickly (again, within 24 hours). I wouldn't rely on Backblaze alone (I always try to have a mix of backup types), but as a safety net (with unlimited quotas) I find Backblaze hard to beat. Discrete, reliable and does the job. Of course, if I had to go down the Hard Drive restore route this would be expensive and returning to the US would be a faff, but as part of a balanced backup strategy you can't go far wrong. I realise others have had different experiences, but for me it just works.... before I end, another minor criticism is the insistence of billing in $$s which is annoying for UK users. The drop of a star reflects the US-centric operation for UK users.
