10 years experience of Genius Hub.

I installed Genius Hub 10 years ago. It has given me complete control over my individual room temperatures and hot water. Any minor problems in the early days were fixed quickly by a telephone call (I believe there is now a modest charge for this - but I haven’t had any need to call them for several years). The online ‘help’ is comprehensive. Highly recommended.

Highly effective smart heating system

I've had a Genius Hub system in our house since 2014. It is very effective, and for a long time was pretty much the only smart heating system to be able offer sensors in every room. The software is highly configurable, though I haven't had to tweak the settings in quite a long time.

The GH user forums have proven to be a good way of getting in touch with GH themselves, and with other users.

Heating is tricky to get right - Genius does it well

Heating is tricky to get right. On the surface its just turning the boiler on and off, but when you have a mesh network of different sensors all in awkward places (as radiator valves tend to be low down behind furniture) then the problem get tricky quite quickly, and many systems promise the world but don't address the real complexities of this.

Genius does, and as an early customer, I've upgraded my system several times as I've extend my house and have been pleased that it has grown with me and has continued to be supported.

While I've had some frustrating moments where valves haven't turned on - inevitably it was diagnosed quickly and typically was the complexity of home networking or a user error like a run down battery. However that fact that my system still works 10 years later, and you can get support (for a small fee, that is far less than a plumber callout) or use the free and friendly genius community - that speaks wonders to a good product.

I still wish for a few more features, but on balance its been a good purchase and for anyone slightly technical that appreciates working home automation this is a good product.

Excellent system, very capable and works well

I've been a GeniusHub customer for 10+ years. Things got off to a bumpy start, but these days the system works really well. It's a lot smarter than most, and with that comes some complication, which is mostly hidden away in the software, but sometimes does take a bit of thinking about.

There are quite a few 'edge cases' where things don't work as you might expect. In my experience this is mostly because of my complicated plumbing (wet UFH + actuators, radiators, boiler, hot tank, zone valves, wiring centres, etc). When one of those things breaks, the system isn't really able to tell you what the problem is (plumbers can find broken parts, but they don't usually understand GH).

When problems arise, there's GeniusHub support. These days they charge a small amount per support ticket - this feels a bit unusual and wrinkles with some, but GH don't charge a subscription for the service, they don't sell your data and don't 'upsell' you for other products either. In my experience, the support you receive is excellent, and they don't do "We've answered, so we'll close the ticket" as you get from some support outfits.

The mobile app is plenty good enough - and gives you more data than some of the competing products. It'd be lovely if it could notify you of problems or flat batteries or whatever, but sadly it can't without opening it occasionally. Being able to control the heating when away from home is pretty handy (eg. turn the heating on as you travel home from holidays). For the intrepid, there is Home Assistant integration so you can do some things there too, if you're inclined.

All in all, having each room of my house be an independently controlled 'zone' of heating is awesome. You don't have some cold rooms because the thermostat is somewhere warmer, and you can just turn on one room and not the rest of the house. None of the rooms overheats either, so you have a pretty constant temperature. You can let the kids turn up the heat in their bedrooms, but limit how high and can 'undo' their preference after a set amount of time so nothing gets left on.

All in all, it's great - I wouldn't be without it.

Best functionality

We've been using the system since 2014 and I'm convinced it has saved a significant amount of money whilst keeping the house much more comfortable. It is natively superior to competing systems e.g. with motion sensing and remote temperature measurement part of the system design, plus integration with Alexa, IFTTT, etc. There is occasionally reliability issues requiring a reset but to be fair what electronic system doesn't need attention from time to time, every computer/phone needs similar from time to time and instant manufacturers support is not available for those. We have needed some additional signal repeaters to get the best communication between devices but due to being an old house with solid walls and spread over 3 floors. Anyone reasonably tech savvy should have no issues

V stressful when it goes wrong, which is too often

I have the system 4 years and I wouldn't recommend it. I've had numerous faults which the installers helped with until they just had to stop helping. I find the 'doctor' facility is difficult to understand and rarely helps. Random radiators can heat to the point of almost taking off to Space, in rooms we're not using, and without being set to on (and with the app showing they are not on, when they are). Have had to go out to the garden to turn the boiler off at the power switch to bring the heating to a stop - and then plug in an electric heater to heat the room we're actually using.

Since day 1, I've found it stressful. You need to be really tech savvy to even consider battling with this system.

I've had this system for about 6 years

I've had this system for about 6 years. 13 radiators and 1 room with underfloor heating. 4 smart plugs and 1 repeater wired behind a plug socket. Functionally it has been excellent. No problems and I have found it very easy to use.

Installation was easy. The TRV modules simply screwed onto the radiator valves and took me a minute or two for each one. The boiler was easy to wire with the instructions for the controller.

I can honestly say the control app has had 1 outage in 6 years that lasted perhaps 24 hours?

I don't know why people are so down on it. It's a great system that I have no hesitation in recommending.

It's really appreciated that you take the time to put in a positive review as many customers have used TrustPilot as a way of trying to wrangle free support from us - which doesn't wash with our support desk.

Sadly I think that the 'down' is that we no longer can offer the 'free phone support' and 'unlimited email support' as simply we have a lot of free support in the doctor built into the app and also free help and support articles on our website - customers simply need to use them.

We moved to a pay-if-you-need-it support model about 3 years ago and those who use it love it. It is not expensive and most customers pay a small amount for a video call with us or a phone call and we fix the issue straight away or explain where they may be going wrong in the settings. Any issue that transpires to be a problem with the app or Genius Hub we immediately refund the cost of the support, no questions asked.

We chose to keep all of our support in Birmingham, employing local people rather than offshoring it. We're proudly from the Midlands and wanted to keep our support in house, and that costs us more to provide this.

Thanks again for your unprompted review and I hope more of our existing customers may see this and also feed back honestly about how they have found the system and also our support.

Deeply unreliable

Deeply unreliable. I honestly can't recall a time when the system wasn't showing some kind of fault. I gave up on the support team over a year ago—they seem to charge for every minor issue, regardless of context. It's a real shame.

For our newer properties, we've switched to HIVE: simple, reliable, affordable, and backed by far superior support.

We ordered the components from Genius, and when they were installed, we were casually told, “If the connection isn’t strong, you’ll need smart plugs.” Really? Given the size of the house and the volume of equipment ordered, that should’ve been obvious from the outset. Once we were almost 2k down, they then told us each of those smart plugs is £80 each, and we were told we might need one in every room just to maintain connectivity.

It’s been a cascade of disappointments, one issue after another, with no sign of improvement.

We can run a signal strength test for you free of charge and you can also see the signal strength easily in the app now on the setting's devices page. The most number of signal boosters (smart plugs) we would ever recommend is one in every three rooms, so I'm sorry that you were told that you would need one in every room. We've not ever needed that many even in a 100 bedroom 5* hotel, which was in a monastery with meter thick walls.

AVOID AS UNRELIABLE AND NO SUPPORT.

Control unit keeps needing resetting. A nightmare of inconsistency. It’s a fiddle and does not deliver when you want it to. AVOID THIS SYSTEM UNLESS YOU WANT CONSTANT HASSLE. I DID GET TELEPHONE SUPPORT WHICH COST £19.95 and has resolved for now the issue.

Don’t buy this system

I’ve had this system about ten years and over that time it has been plagued with unreliability. As of today I am three days without a functioning system, the result that I cannot turn on heating or heat water. The company charge 10 quid to look at an email and I think in The region of thirty quid to take a call. I can see why, they must get lots of calls. Invariably the system lets you down in the winter. You can’t rely on it. The thermostat that controls it eats batteries and turns off the system when it gets to that stage. It takes an hour to get it back. But today’s problem I have never seen before. No amount of experience with the system will get it to work. Even though there is an override facility, that doesn’t work either. I am now looking at binning the system and going back to the old fashioned way of turning rads on and off and it cannot come too soon.

If a customer has very old hardware, then we do everything that we can to support this, but they must understand that a system purchased 10 years ago is running much older firmware and therefore will not necessarily benefit from the reliability and features that the newer systems now have. We have taken a lot of effort to ensure that each part of the system can be individually upgraded, and all of the equipment is backwards compatible wherever possible, so our customer base can continue to benefit from our new equipment and features without having to remove it all and start again.
We have ‘service’ options which you can use to have your system looked over by one of our own highly trained heating engineers (not a sub contractor), where we will visit the property, and not only change the batteries in all of the components, and make sure that everything is working as it should be, but also do diagnostic checks on all of the components and what they are connected to, and provide end user training on how to get the most from the system, and also give you unlimited remote technical support for the following year.

Simply awful

Simply awful. Terrible system, with bugs from the start. TERRIBLE support - they wanted us to pay for phone calls to fix issues. Terrible guides and explanations online. Honestly, a waste of time and money. Now looking to have the whole system replaced. Has been in place for several years and simply no good. Our boiler person installed them in several clients' homes, and all complain - he is going to change pretty much all of them..

Terrible reliability, 0 at-home support

I have had my system for about 5 years now and I do not think it has ever been 100%. Problems experienced include (but are not limited to):
- Powered room stats reading wildly inaccurate temperatures and being impossible to correct - this for a number of years now.
- Powered room stats loosing connection and being impossible to reconnect - this for 3 years now.
- Rad. valves loosing connection and being impossible to reconnect, even after working through and closely following "help" videos, buying and installing additional smart plugs, etc. - this since day one. Resulting in them having to be replaced with Drayton TRVs and the system being manually operated.
- Zone valves not opening when called to by powered room stats or rad. valves, so several areas can only be operated by manually opening / closing the zone valves - this for over a year now.
- Oil heating of water in hot water cylinder no longer working at all, so I can only heat using electricity. Temperature able to fall to below 0 C if I don't switch on the electric immersion heater, risking freezing. Also, very expensive to have hot water now.
- Absolutely no specialists familiar with the system within several hours drive of where I live, and the factory say they have no specialists who will do home visits to trouble shoot, repair, even if I offer t pay all associated costs, not just labour and travel hours.
- Etc., etc., etc.
Going for this system was by far the single biggest and most expensive error I made in the £400K refurb of my lury home. Not for lack of trying, can I get resolved the seemingly inherent shortcomings and ever increasing number of additional failing systems over time - - for either love nor any amount of money.
I bitterly regret having this system installed and I consider extremely poor the manufacturer's after sales support service, especially their total failure to be able to supply a specialist to come out and resolve all the problems with this very expensive system, even if I were to pay for this fully.
Consequently, I am stuck with this very expensive, difficult to replace, largely failed and unsupported system, and I have to wake up to a cold house with no hot water, having to go in to my garage to operate everything manually in the morning and then several times a day. It also costs me a fortune in electricity to heat the water and in wasted heating oil costs.
I would most certainly not recommend this system to anyone.

Do NOT buy this system

We've had this system for around 5 years and I'm desperate to get rid of it. Unfortunately, uninstalling it is as difficult as installing and struggling to find someone to do this.

So, having to put up with:

Having to do a manual reset of the system at least weekly. Currently sitting in a cold house because it has crashed again and still not resetting after 5 attempts.

Batteries wear down too soon on the valves.

Valves constantly glitch and default to on.

Some valves have just stopped working altogether. I have one radiator I can't switch off (unless the whole system is off) and another I can't switch on.

Customer service is non-existent unless you pay. They will keep referring you to online videos. Well, if they worked, you wouldn't need to call customer service! I begrudge paying even more money when the original system is so expensive.

We have wasted hundreds of pounds in unnecessary energy costs due to this system.

Seriously, do not buy it.

The Genius Hub is very customisable and we know that this makes it very efficient and appropriate to many complex heating environments, where other smart thermostats cannot provide adequate control. We have ‘service’ options which you can use to have your system looked over by one of our own highly trained heating engineers (not a sub contractor), where we will visit the property, and not only change the batteries in all of the components, and make sure that everything is working as it should be, but also do diagnostic checks on all of the components and what they are connected to, and provide end user training on how to get the most from the system, and also give you unlimited remote technical support for the following year.

Top quality tec support

I've had my Genius Hub system (I still think of them as Heat Genius) for almost 10 years and over that time it's been mostly fantastic. Any issues I've had, I've been able to fix myself using their online support articles/knowledge base. Recently had a power cut and a couple of the repeaters went offline and I struggled to get them working so booked a support call. It was well worth it and I'm glad I did. Not only was my issue sorted, but I had a chance to talk to a very knowledgeable guy who explained how he fixed it. He gave my system (26 devices) a good once over and explained how to do some things I'd been curious about. I came away much more confident in how to tailor, operate and fix my setup. I also discussed an upgrade path that would minimise my cost (I have an original HUB-B which is starting to show its age). Well done Genius HUB. Great support from a small company. Thank you.

The Genius Hub is clearly Top Tech.


This top end technology in heating control has given our household highly adjustable control over both heating and power, providing significant savings in energy costs. I sometimes even take control via the app when I am abroad during the winter.
I find the app to be as user friendly as it needs to be, particularly with the use of ‘The Doctor’ section I can make many corrections to minor hiccups.
However, and most importantly there are dedicated support team members who will stick with you through thick and thin to resolve any issues you may come across.
The cost of a support call may seem a little top end at £20 a throw, but that is not the case in my experience! I have found it to be nothing other than top end in terms of ‘value for money’. I therefore do not have the slightest hesitation in strongly recommending this product and customer support.

Great Service

I am so grateful to the support team at Genius Hub. Nobody likes to have to pay for support, but when you get great service and devoted time until the issue is resolved, it is worth every penny. I was paying the monthly subscription until Genius changed the way they offer support, but I never used it, so am now more than happy to pay the £20 as and when I need it. Reckon I am better off! A welcome change to talk to UK based support that really do know their product. Thank you.

Nothing but trouble

I have installed the system in my home in 2022 and I have spent more than £2000 on Genius hub system components. Since then I have had issues with the following:
1. System showing batteries as full one day for the thermostat stop working the next day due to the empty battery
2. Devices intermittently disconnecting from the hub
3. Devices intermittently not registering the temperature
4. Thermostats giving wrong temperature readings (usually approx. 5-6 C difference)
5. Heating in some zones turns on intermittently when there is no reason for it to be turned on. A couple of weeks ago, a couple of zones in my home turned on at 4AM but the heating is scheduled to start from 6:30.
6. Support avoiding to give you truthful and complete information about the issue. It seems like they are aware of these big issues with the system but can't or won't do anything about it to genuinely rectify the major issues with the system rather than handing out workarounds and quick fixes which are short lived.
7. The system is full of bugs, it's unreliable, support helpless and they charge you money (currently £9.99) to troubleshoot and fix the system faults you can't address yourself.
8. Several times, I have complained and asked to escalate my complaints to someone senior in the company but this was always ignored and never happened.
9. Support was promising fixes which never happened.
10. Batteries getting drained in matter of days.

This is a terrible, overpriced, unreliable heating system which is sold for premium price. You will always have to tinker with it to make it work due to the many bugs in their system and more issues just keep showing up. You can read online reviews and posts on their forum and it's evident that this is a common occurrence. I wish I knew that before I bought this system from them. This way, I'm stuck with £2000+ heating system which is unreliable and they keep milking me with their support fees. The biggest issue is the stress and lost time because you never know whether you'll come home to a cold house or whether you'll wake up in the middle of the night sweating because the heating came on when it wasn't supposed to. The lost time is significant due to all the tinkering you need to do to troubleshoot and make it somewhat work.

If you want a heating system that is reliable which you can set and forget, this isn’t it.

The Genius Hub is very customisable and we know that this makes it very efficient and appropriate to many complex heating environments, where other smart thermostats cannot provide adequate control. Where do I begin?

Where do I begin? Bought this system in 2014, added to it over time, replaced a few faulty units. As with many other reviews the system is buggy and for a good chunk of the 10 years I've had it that is absolutely true. Yes, there have been times support did get me going again, sometimes easily other times not. Woke this morning to find all channels had turned themselves into off mode! Last night it was clearer the heating problem we've been having on and off is spooky misinformation between hub system and radiator valve. Lounge radiators not turning on or off randomly despite system saying it's communicating. Graph not reporting correct temperatures (thinks it's been off but has been running my manual set all night :( ). The system does use batteries much more than I would have hoped - not very eco! Every time there's a significant system change required e.g. holiday, summer, winter, clocks change you have to reprogramme all your times/temperatures. Many people including their staff have been asking for profiles right from the early years - no sign they'll ever introduce them. I'm utterly fed up with the system, have been the last 3 years. Despite the expensive installation I will be removing it when I've decided on a replacement system. Don't buy this system you will regret it :(
