Shocking Experience – Our Dog Would Not Have Survived Under Their Care
Title:
Rating: ★☆☆☆☆
We were loyal clients of The Shrubbery Veterinary Centre in Northfleet for years—but our recent experience has been devastating. Our Labrador, Oscar, became seriously ill and we took him to the Shrubbery five times in just six days.
Each visit saw us dealing with a different vet, and each one gave us a conflicting diagnosis: diabetes, pancreatitis, spinal problems, diabetic neuropathy. No consistent treatment plan was offered, and shockingly, despite Oscar’s clear signs of pain, paralysis, and infection, no antibiotics were prescribed at any point. He was simply given painkillers that masked the problem while his condition deteriorated.
It took a remote consultation with a vet from our insurance provider (Direct Line) to finally give us the urgent advice we needed: to insist on a referral to a proper veterinary hospital. Only after we demanded the referral did they agree—reluctantly—and without compassion. Oscar was admitted to Southfields Veterinary Hospital where he was immediately diagnosed with two serious conditions, including a viral infection that could have been treated far earlier with antibiotics.
He remained in intensive care for nine days. We were told by the hospital that had we not brought him in when we did, he likely would not have survived. That is an unbearable thought.
To make matters worse, The Shrubbery has now passed our disputed bill to a debt collection agency—despite the fact that we have raised formal complaints about the substandard care.
We feel completely let down. This was not the standard of care you expect from professionals. There was no urgency, no coordination, and no compassion. Oscar suffered needlessly due to a failure to act, a failure to listen, and a failure to care.
I would urge anyone considering this practice to think twice—especially if your pet has a complex or urgent issue. If we hadn’t trusted our instincts and pushed for better care, Oscar wouldn’t be here today.
