Mostly just very confused
I'm really not sure how I'm passing my online masters in Mental Health course. It's quite concerning. I legitimately put more effort into my undergraduate in Politics and was subjected to intense academic criticism on all essays (attended red brick, received 2:1), at some points not even understanding the feedback and having to take time to review elements of it in my own time, applying it to my next essay. Here though my subpar work is described as possessing "excellent understanding" (I don't have excellent understanding), and I'm applauded for "examining competing theories" (I don't even know what the theories are). Like others have said I feel that the feedback is copy paste, and I strongly suspect that it is merely my writing style which is getting me my grades...because it surely cannot be the content.
I feel no sense of achievement here, my work is 100% garbage that when I submit it I literally shrug my shoulders and say to myself "maybe this will be the one that finally fails like it should", and yet no, it never does. Perhaps you're wondering why I'm complaining, surely I have it easy, surely this is the best outcome possible; minimum effort for maximum results. No, I've learnt nothing more than already existed in my brain, I feel my grades are more of a baseline reading of my preexisting intelligence. Which is nice. But I didn't need to spend 8k for that.
I've given 3 stars because there is the slight possibility that I do indeed understand all these things that I'm (successfully) trying to convince Wlvs that I understand (when I don't have a single clue). I've also given 3 stars because I do appreciate the flexibility the course gives me. I've given 3 stars because there have been moments of interest within the course, but ultimately, if I had to go back to September 2022 and decide if I would do this course again; I think I'd say no.
This University was far better a few…
This University was far better a few years ago. The service it provides its students has severely declined, it has stressed my sons out to the point where they have both had nervous breakdowns due to the sheer apathy of the student services and senior management of their faculty. My eldest son will be moving to Birmingham to continue his studies, do not let their message fool you. They used to care about their students, now they don't.
If I could give 0 stars I would
If I could give 0 stars I would. My son had been attending Wolverhampton University. He is due to go into his last year but the teaching staff/administration/heads have been beyond incompetent regarding him and his lessons. He has been treated unfairly and poorly, they've lied to cover their incompetence and after he made a complaint, they refused him acceptance to finish his 3rd year. They have stressed him out to no end and please note that he can evidence correspondence he had with them. He can prove just how incompetent they were with him and that he continuously tried to get in touch with them... he has sent an email to the head/the dean in regards to how he has been treated and to date, they have not had the decency to respond. Please also note that the first complaint he made went in his favor. This University is despicable and have wronged and stressed out my son greatly.
AVOID
Currently finishing my 2 year online masters degree. BIGGEST WASTE OF £7600. no support. tutors make you feel like late submission is your own fault even if you have sent out numerous emails asking for a help and get no reply and when you get one you're told that late submission only knocks so much off your grade. this university does not care about their students or their students mental health due to stress. MSc Psychology Conversion Course Zero Stars
I started the MSc Psychology Conversion and dropped the course before I finished the first course. There is no teacher presence and when you ask for help they do not provide any support. I paid so much money to start this program I would really like a refund. They truly set you up to fail.
What a fantastic course
What a fantastic course ! I have just completed the online conversion MSc in Psychology of Mental Health and Wellbeing. This course is designed for those who did not study psychology at Bachelor’s level.
I returned to study over 30 years after completing a law degree and I loved this course!
It can be challenging but in a really good way. It develops an excellent knowledge base and encourages independent, self directed study , which I really enjoyed.
The course is British Psychological Society approved and so the syllabus is underpinned by that quality mark and meets their rigorous standards. Not every course out there has this credibility.
Modules are 8 weeks long , lectures are short pre recorded videos ( with written transcripts) which lead naturally into the recommended reading , online group work ( for some modules ) and structured assessments built on that learning.
If you like exploring a subject and working further to develop your knowledge base then this is the course for you.
Each online classroom has an online facilitator who you can ask questions of in a discussion forum or email directly. They reply within 48 hours to queries. My experience was that they were keen , knowledgeable and available.
There are also online discussions each module for the classroom to join in with by writing responses and giving each other feedback. These really help to develop brevity and accuracy in written work.
You will not have face to face lectures over zoom , but that allows you to study flexibly , when you want and in your way. There is a lot of study / reading but this is a Masters.
Core texts are all available online at the click of a button. I bought some text books because I like a physical book but you don’t have to.
The course is structured so that you have the independent skills to undertake a dissertation. The dissertation is 16 weeks long and I loved every minute of mine. I developed a piece of independent qualitative research , interviewed participants and was supported throughout by an incredible dissertation supervisor who gave me confidence and guidance every step of the way.
My experience of pastoral care was also excellent. I had a series of biopsies and an operation during the course and chose not to take a study break but to carry on with the course. I was able to discuss my feelings and concerns openly and was well supported.
I have finished this course with a wealth of knowledge, a real interest in pursuing qualitative research further and the confidence that this MSc has currency in the real world.
WHY I LOVE THE UNIVERSITY OF WOLVERHAMPTON
University of Wolverhampton gives the best support ever to its students. I am an international student, and my Masters program is MSc, Health and Social Care, and i have not regretted one minute of my student time here on campus. My faculty lecturers are absolutely tireless and they constantly upgrade their efforts to ensure we have the best grades and experiences. I truly truly vote my Uni as the best in terms of support, inclusivity and diversity.
No support
No support, feel like I have been set up to fail. When you submit a complaint they take no responsibility. Wax lyrical about supporting students mental health but they are the biggest source of stress in my life ever. They take advantage of their convenient location for mature students but I would avoid studying here, they are only interested in the money rather than the student experienc.
Do not go here!
I started in September 2022; I am doing my Msc, I have been begging for help and guidance on this course. It is online. I have done online before and expected we would get some help. I was wrong. I have put in a formal complaint every month and emailed the tutors every month. No response. If you are a disabled student or require any support. You won't get it at all. Two thousand pounds, and four months later, I am still in the same position. I wish someone had warned me about how disgusting and unsupported this uni is. I am legitimately paying to fail. The feedback is so so limited and generic that you will never pass or improve. Don't worry. The gaslighting will make you feel like it's your fault that you don't understand. If you want to feel pathetic about your ability and if you want to waste your money
.then come here.
Oh before anyone asks, why are they not going to do anything about the terrible lack of support? They already know... They don't care. We are paychecks.
Glad I transferred out of Wolverhampton after my first modules!
I began the MSc in Psychology conversion and had an awful experience. The course is taught by videos and contact is mainly with a tutor who was a PhD student. They provide cut-paste feedback weekly that was unhelpful and provided very little guidance on assessment. They comment on online posts and that’s the extent of interaction. Grading was arbitrary at best, with little build up to reconnect learners who had come from other disciplines. I did well, but others I know failed and had no clue why. A lot of tears and a lot of dissatisfaction. A lot of wasted money. Complaints were made but were met with defensive responses not a willingness to change and threats were made when people chose to discuss their issues. Students lost both trust and money. Large numbers left and went to other institutions. I transferred my credits and am now at another university (again, fully online) which is much better taught and the assessment clearer, more rigorous, and feedback more extensive. I would strongly advise my family and friends not to choose this course at Wolverhampton and spend their money elsewhere.
Lack of care and concern of the learners' experience
I enrolled on a 10 week basic Italian course. After 3 weeks I gave up as the teaching was so chaotic and antiquated. I left each week totally confused and demotivated. I got more benefit out of a language app at 10% of the price of the course.
I felt strongly about the poor teaching and sent an email to the course leader giving 14 points why I felt the quality of teaching was not at the right level. I never got a response and wrote to the University complaints team in August 2022. 3 months later I get a response saying "The concerns that you have raised will be passed to the appropriate team for consideration moving forward. "
They did apologise that a response was not sent by the team leader, who had left. The University clearly do not take concerns about poor teaching seriously. The time taken and the non response does not reflect well on Wolverhampton University.
Incompetence admin/student/ IT services
If you undertake a degree, pay a significant amount of money for it, then expect (after you have completed and passed) the course to attend your own graduation ceremony and be advised where/when/how to book for it, you may like to consider an alternative Uni. Despite several months of attempting to contact them (students shouldn't even have to in my opinion - something the Uni should be organising and contacting their students about) found out when finally got through the graduation ceremony had already happened!! Thanks a bunch! 2 years of unacknowledged work. Not happy.
Online masters
Online masters: Don't waste your money, time or intelligence. Far too many students and a very unprofessional member of staff. My reviews are usually 5 star as I'm usually too careful to spend my money unwisely. I'm lucky I had alternatives but far too many students who feel trapped and unable to work out the assessment criteria or incorrect statistics to work on. Overall teaching includes 7 mins x 3 pre-recorded lectures weekly and google searches which are irrelevant to standards required at this level and very lacking in engagement. The mental health of conscientious students has been affected which is what has led me to leave this review.
Very poor communication/help from AskWLV.
This review is based on my experience on communication between myself and members of the university. I started my course September last year. I was enrolled late. Since I go my offer to study here in July, I had made the continuous effort to contact my faculty and the assistants at AskWLV for them to allow me to enrol, give me my timetable, help me access my university email and login details ect; not a single response. Calls weren’t answered, emails weren’t responded to, help calls left unread. It was incredibly stressful trying to get hold of someone from July till OCTOBER so I could actually start university! My course commenced around the 20th of October and as a result of lack of communication from them I wasn’t enrolled till a couple of days after, after going to Wolverhampton and the faculty desk in person! Messed up my SFE schedule and just cooked up a great deal of worry and stress for me and my family.
Fast forward to January now; beginning of semester 2. I was meant to be enrolled onto another module for that part of the year which I wasn’t and didn’t realise I hadn’t. Up until 2 days before an examination was to take place, my personal tutor whilst checking on my progress briefly mentioned the exam. The confusion I felt after hearing I had an exam in 2 days for a module that had never been on my canvas tile or MyWLV timetable.
I was encouraged to sit the exam anyway ‘to get a feel of it’ but had issues accessing the exam anyways. I then had to spend the beginning of my summer break going over a whole module ready to sit the exam for the first time on what was my resit attempt. Thank God I passed but if I hadn’t, I would’ve possibly had to resit my whole foundation year again which would’ve been absolutely pointless considering it would’ve been that 1 module I failed and wasn’t even registered on it in the first place.
September 19th is when my course should start. Still yet to hear from absolutely anyone whether I can continue onto the year or have been given the access to enrol. Calling the AskWLV desk and being left on hold for hours, sometimes even cutting the phone before you’re put on hold, emails/help calls being left on unread; the horrible experience I had last year is repeating itself this year. I am tired of this university. I genuinely wish I had studied elsewhere or sacrificed my desired course for something else elsewhere.
May God be with all the undergrads yet to come, only His strength will carry you through your experience at this place.
WLV Online masters degrees
On campus experience may be completely different, so read this if you're interested in WLV ONLINE degree.
The online platform is very basic, much poorer than EDX or Coursera. It's not used fully, there are many links outside to another WLV platforms, overall the user experience is average and confusing.
The contents... Well, it's a list of documents and books one has to study, plus a 5min video "lecture" - this can be created by a high school student. Quite a shame...
Feedback on assignments is very generic and looks like "copy/paste" in most cases.
Looks like the tutors have a "load" they must bear, that's all. No teaching, no tutoring, no support.
Requests for examples of mistakes, benchmarking etc. are ignored.
The usual excuse and explanation for the above is "it's a masters degree level, you are supposed to do everything yourself". If that's true, what is WLV charging £7-11K for?
Completely Incompetent Admissions Staff
The last month or so has been extremely stressful due to the gross incompetence of the uni admissions staff, most of whom I believe must be students doing summer jobs as they have absolutely zero customer service skills whatsoever.
I applied to do a course via clearing. The first call handler spoke very poor English and put me on the wrong course, so I had to call back to get it changed.
After a few weeks of not hearing anything, their computer system went down and I had to change my password. It was at this point that I noticed the course on my application form was again the wrong one. I applied for help via the online help desk but nobody replied.
I then called the uni trying to sort things out and get my original course reinstated on the application. Again, the call handler had no idea what she was doing and even accused me of not uploading my CV when it was right in front of her. She then proceeded to start typing without ending the call so I was just stuck there listening to her type.
Another week went by and still no answer. I was offered a place on a course I didn’t want and nobody wanted to correct this.
In the end I withdrew my application out of sheer frustration. The whole thing reduced me to tears several times. Others I have spoken to had similar experiences.
No proper regulations
Some members of staff just don't take…
Some members of staff just don't take their job seriously. I had a project supervisor who just went radio silent on me for weeks at a time. Didn't respond to emails, was never in their office. Didn't show up to meetings, was 2 and a half hours late once. Totally unprofessional. Zero respect for your time.
Impacted my mental health and caused me absolute stress trying to complete my final year. Hard the nerve to tell me countless things need changing 12 hours before the hand-in when they hadn't shown up to meeting after meeting. Just unacceptable.
It'd be nice to be treated with some respect after all we are paying enough to be entitled to it.
Without that mess of a supervisor my review would be 4 stars. There are members of staff that are absolutely excellent and are great teachers.
Have taken a few classes here now seems…
Have taken a few classes here now seems to be going well, it's not too busy and things like lunch breaks and seating is never a problem, I like it its ok
