Constant issues with car tyre pressure warning system and poor customer service
Constant issues with car tyre pressure. We picked up vehicle not knowing that one of the tyres had 14 PSI of air. Remedied by ourselves but constant issues with warning light resumed throughout five days of hire. Attempts to talk someone about the issue were a waste of time.
Customer service was poor and took no interest in remedying the issue and have so far not responded via email as they said they would.
I stopped using Apex 4 years ago after a bad experience. I will stay away for good now.

Extremely poor customer service with lack of communication
First of all,
The rental car has problem, halfway through the rental, the driver's window was stuck, and couldn't move up or down. Secondly, the battery for car key to start the car was low in power and couldn't be detected even when the key is physically in the car.
When I drove in to Apex to replace the car
The staff attended to us was tardy and nonchalant to us. She didn't communicate actively or clearly, leaving us wondering what is going to happen and what's the next step to the process.
Apparently, she told us that she will check in with the mechanics to see if the windows could be fixed, after which she told us that our car need to be changed.
After that, she just disappeared without updating us or providing ua with any info on what we are to dp or expect.
When she came back, she attended to other customers, despite us, still waiting for an hour plus. Apparently she just came back fron her lunch break, while we were left hungry, waiting for the replacement car.
In total we wait for more than an hour plus, and her attitude and service is totally atrocious, which is shocking, considering that Apex is rated no.1 customer service in NZ in 2024.
I am totally appalled and saddened by the experience. There was no apology given at all.

Terrible pick up experience. The cars are 20min from the terminal. There's only one pick up shuttle working. Despite hiring online, the pick up process took 45 min. In total over an hour. The costs for a short hire rocketed once they started discussing that there is a massive excess on any damage and no road side assistance. The drop off was quick but getting back to the airport was again a pain. Don't use them.

Apex charge double the pump price when filling your vehicle after a hire. Apparently it is in the fine print but they haven’t managed to show me where yet. My fill was $143 and they charged me $260. This is extortion. It is also hidden in the small print. Avoid them at all costs

Clear instructions, easy process, great communication, friendly staff. The only company to offer zero excess with no bond payment required. Car, airport shuttle, and customer service were all great. Totally painless. Would recommend

Good Price, but poor service.
We were early and car was not ready which was acceptable to us. Quick completion of paper work on our return and car ready to go.
We paid for ski racks and noted they had a bungy cord wrapped around them. We elected to take the car as had other commitments that afternoon. We returned the next day to enquire with the staff as to why they had a bungy cord and was told that's standard in NZ, the bungy is just an extra precaution. Considering they were not lockable it's hardly an extra precaution. Having rented cars in NZ for the last 5 years we have always had lockable ski racks and told the staff that. Her response was we are busy and I doubt I have another car to give you, but if you wait I'll check. We waited around whilst she basically ignored us so gave up and left. No apology and no offer to refund the extra cost of ski racks. The car was a little older than we had used before and appeared to lack in power from previous Santa Fe's we had hired. Overall disappointing experience.

Apex have always given us amazing service!! They are very efficient and quick and follow up on any queries with speed. Will always be my first choice!

Extremely Disappointing Experience – Poor Service and No Accountability
We rented a Staria equivalent from Apex for a 10-day family trip in New Zealand, expecting a smooth and comfortable experience for our group, which included two young children and an elderly parent. However, on the 3rd day, we were advised by Apex staff that snow chains could not be fitted on the Staria, despite our plans to travel through snow-affected mountain regions. With no alternative support or solutions offered, we were forced to downgrade to a much smaller Nissan X-Trail.
This change made our journey extremely uncomfortable. We had to throw away a large suitcase and a stroller just to fit into the downsized car. Later, we found out from locals that snow chains can be used on larger vehicles like the Staria—meaning we were misinformed by Apex and forced into an unnecessary and costly downgrade.
To make things worse, despite multiple emails and a promise to respond within 3 business days, Apex has completely ignored our refund request for the difference in rental charges. It’s been over two weeks with no reply.
This experience has been frustrating, unprofessional, and extremely disappointing. I would strongly caution others to think twice before booking with Apex, especially if you are traveling with family or planning mountain drives.

Problems with excess charge
The mark of a good car rental company perhaps only shows when things go wrong. I was unlucky enough for someone to reverse into my rental car, although damage was negligible to the rental. The problems began when I returned it. Although Apex declared the car in satisfactory condition, they took the damage deposit from my credit card on the grounds that a third party may claim against Apex (although there is no mention of this in the T&C and the third party admitted liability anyway). I was in a limbo where I couldn't even claim on my own excess insurance.
Apex's admin is chaotic and inefficient. I did get my money back after several weeks and many email exchanges and complaints, but it was hassle I could have done without. The car itself was okay during the hire though it rattled badly.
For the above reasons, I can't recommend this company. Moral is check with whichever hire company you choose exactly what happens in the event of a collision.
Perfect car rental
I rented a car in Christchurch and I was very satisfied. It was a Toyota RAV4 with only 12.400 km. After a 5.000 km roundtrip through South and North Island I returned the vehicle in Auckland. Also the staff was very friendly in Christchurch and in Auckland.
The rental was quite cheap including the costs for the ferry.
Therefore I recommend Apex very much.

Having used Hertz before (Never again, thank you....) I needed 2 cars, North & South island. 1st one, Auckland, was a fairly high mileage (94k Km) but immaculate, valeted, drove like a dream. Hadn't realised Apex were ~ 1Km away, but mini bus was efficient and friendly (Both ways). Initial pick up was swift, as was the return process.
South island even better, same pick up efficiency, SUPERB Rav4, even had sat nav. Really enjoying the trip (Still on it)

Picked up my rental APEX Nissan in Auckland CBD, and I was given the right amount of information about the agreement etc. Serious and trustworthy staff.
Returned the car at APEX station at Auckland airport, and everything (inspection) took about 3 min, and then I was cleared and off I went with the shuttle bus to departure. Very smooth and easy! One week for slightly less than $1000.
Took $3000 from us when someone…
Took $3000 from us when someone reversed into our stationary car and won’t return the money. The accident happened mid Jan, it’s now end of Feb and Apex won’t give us any info at all about what is happening, what stage the claim on the other person’s insurance is at or how long it might take. We have the contact details of the other driver who says Apex called her in late Jan and she hasn’t heard anything since. Since it is unlikely that the damage repair will come to $3000, it feels like Apex are hoping we will just forget about it so that they can keep the $3000 as extra profit. Won’t book with them again, and won’t recommend them to friends / family either. Would advise using a more reputable / honest company.

APEX Queenstown - Rude Staff with Attitude Problems
The after hours car collection at Christchurch airport went smoothly and was handled by a different company who were very helpful. The car was old and had over 175k miles on it, which I didn’t expect and for a rental car, is simply too old. The car was ok but within 30 mins of driving it, various warning lights came on, including servicing required etc. I called the company the next day and they said not to worry about the service warning lights. Still, I didn’t have much confidence in the car and the thing was, it wasn’t cheap at all! It was holiday season and the car was extortionately priced. If I had known that the car would have so many miles on it and various issues, I wouldn’t have paid the price I did. Anyway, it was actually fine in the end. My main disgruntlement is with the car return at Queenstown airport. It was Christmas Day and ok the staff were probably very unhappy to be working but that’s not my fault. I went in and greeted them with a “ Merry Christmas” and all I receive back was scowls and attitude from the get-go. One of the ladies went around the car inspecting the scratches and dents (which were pre-existing) and tried to make a fuss about them so I shut her down. I asked about the shuttle bus to the airport and was told every 15 mins. We loaded our luggage into the bus ourselves and waited inside for around 15 mins. At this point, we were running out of time for our flight. We waited and waited and nobody came to the bus and instead, ladies were staring at us from within the office. At this point, I was very frustrated and went inside the office and said if we could leave. One of the ladies with an attitude said it’s every 15 mins and I said yes, we have been here since 20 mins now. There were no other passengers so I didnt understand what on earth was happening. It was like they were just trying to irritate us and be rude. I went outside and waited again. Still they didn’t come to drive the bus. So I asked again and then another lady, who had even more of a bad attitude got into the bus. I said good morning and happy Christmas and she stared at me and completely ignored me. The drive was uncomfortable silence and my partner and I were totally confused by their attitude. When we arrived, we both said thank you and again, she completely ignored me and just stared at us with an absolute bad attitude. How can a company function with rude, arrogant and bad attitude staff like this? Absolutely appalling service (and car) and I would say stay away from Apex, particular Apex Queenstown. They don’t deserve to have your business and at the amount I spent on hiring an old banger, disgraceful.
Delighted and Impressed
We booked cars in Auckland and in Christchurch for a total of 5 weeks and the service was excellent. Very easy to deal with, professional and efficient. We were impressed both with the service and the quality of the vehicles (Toyota Hybrid RAV4). Easy to pick up and drop off even after hours. Thank you to Ed in the Auckland office, and June in the Christchurch office. We had a good trip around the country.

We booked twice during our stay in New Zealand! One car in Auckland for our route in the north island & Christchurch for our trip in the south. Our experience has been great both times. I love that you can just get the all save options.
Originally we wanted to use a friends car in christchurch but the plans changed last minute and we had to book a rentals just 2 days before our trip through the south started. We got a great last minute offer and had a great time!
