Horrible experience...do not hire
I am going on record here by saying my experience with Safe Ship Movers and Ciao Bella is the worst I have ever had in the past 11 plus moves I have made over my adult life. I hired Safe Ship Movers based on a couple of positive reviews. Little did I know that they are simply a broker and do not actually do the moving themselves. They hire it out...probably to the lowest bidder. In my case, they hired Ciao Bella out of Ca.
I had nothing but trouble and issues with Ciao Bella from pick up to delivery. On the scheduled day for pick up in Oregon, they were suppose to arrive at 9:00 AM. They finally showed up at 5:00 PM. I requested they return the next morning, especially knowing they were tired and in no shape to pack valuable art and glass. However, they declined and said they HAD to have everything packed and loaded by the end of the day. ( I wish I had fired them right there, but I was vacating my sold house and the new owners were arriving in two days.) They finally finished at 11:00 PM. They left a big mess behind...debris everywhere....empty pizza boxes, empty rolls of tape, lots of packing material, etc.
This was nothing compared to the nightmare of the delivery in Maine. After a week or so of asking where my belongings were, they finally showed up. They sent two, non-English speaking young men. When they pulled into the driveway, the driver rolled down his window and smoke came billowing out. I did not see a second person....apparently, he was stooped down under the dash while smoking a joint. Both men were stoned!!!! The guy in the passenger seat literally fell out o the truck. They were driving a CDL truck which required the driver have a CDL license. There is no way this man had a CDL license. Maine has a strict rule about ALL CDL drivers being able to speak “fluent” English. So, for starters they were stoned and breaking the law.
When they finally began unloading my items.....which took another 30 minutes because the driver didn’t understand what a Certified Bank check was, and kept saying “cash, cash”, it was another nightmare. They couldn’t read “fragile” so they piled heavy boxes on top of fragile boxes. When they finally came to the end of unloading boxes, my son went into the truck and found my beautiful 40 year old Teak (with inlaid slate) dining table in shambles. Not only broken, but it had some sort of skid marks down the top. Along with that, was a totally broken computer desk with hutch. It looked like a gorilla had simply ripped it apart.
I knew, when I began to unpack, I would find damage. However, I never dreamed I would lose so many things.....especially irreplaceable art. I was a glass artist for over 30 years, and when I retired I kept a few, very special pieces. I have been asked to have a retrospective show of my work. Two of the major pieces for the show are a total loss. I am beyond devastated. They are not replaceable or repairable.
I have a long list of other items that have been broken and/or damaged. Also, most every box I unpacked had mouse droppings. Additionally, I am missing several items....mainly a black ukelele with inlaid mother of pearl which was in a red soft case. And, 4 collectible flutes which were in a black hard case.
Now to the real issue, aside from all of the frustration, damage, breakage, is the “after the fact” disclosure by Ciao Bella that they will not insure glass, musical instruments, food items, and more. How do you disclose this information after you have accepted an order and not inform the customer. Had I known in advance, you can be assured I would never have hired Safe Ship Movers to farm out my order in the first place. Ciao Bella has sent a Claims form to me, which would be ridiculous to fill out knowing they are going to refuse to cover my loss. I have photos to document each and every item. I expect Safe Ship Moving and Ciao Bella to make this situation right. I am definitely prepared to issue a law suit to both companies.
