Product is middle tier at best, but support is the real issue - plus they are deceptive.

I used this as a directory listing for games. I downloaded the free version, attempted to use it, figured I'd upgrade to the unlimited version because they said there was a money back guarantee, tried to modify it, and noticed how much work it actually takes to modify.

I then contacted support, where they tried to upcharge me for customization. I declined, and opened a second support ticket for a refund. They told me unlimited versions can't get a refund, but because there was a promotion they would refund the difference, and that if I didn't attempt to charge back etc. they would customize directorist for me for the first time for free. They created a very convincing mock up of what they would be able to create, and said they would get to work on it. I gave them access to my site and everything for implementation.

2 weeks went by, and nothing. Some correspondence, and an insistence that they would get the work done. I told them due to not having this part working we had to push our golive date. It was pushed three weeks out, and they said they would have it finished by then.

After repeated prompting they said it would be done by the end of the weekend.

It's been over a month, and they have not finished the work. I was finally fed up, and took time to really dig into the CSS and feature set, creating an entire custom solution myself in 5 hours. 5 Hours of my time was spent, on what they couldn't do in a full month. they could have just refunded me the entire price, and we could have gone our separate ways.

But they didn't. So not only have they lost repeated business across my future sites that may have been a better fit for directorist, but hopefully others see this and are wary, as they will not help you once they have your money.

I wanted to love Directorist. I really did. I spent the better part of 2023 through 2025 building a tourism directory on this plugin, and at every stage of that process, Directorist found a new and creative way to make me regret the decision.

Let me be specific, because vague complaints help nobody.

The design flexibility is a lie. Not a misunderstanding, not a matter of expectations. A lie. The marketing says customizable. The reality is that colors and styles are hardcoded into the plugin so deeply that changing something as basic as a listing card layout requires you to write custom CSS overrides on top of inline styles that the plugin injects whether you asked for them or not. You are not designing your directory. You are negotiating with someone else's design, and they are not interested in compromise.

The WordPress integration, which should be the entire point of being a WordPress plugin, is somehow the weakest part of the product. I lost count of how many times a perfectly normal WordPress theme or plugin would break the moment Directorist entered the room, like a guest who shows up to a dinner party and immediately picks a fight with the furniture. Custom code adjustments were not optional. They were a requirement just to get the thing to sit cleanly inside a standard WordPress installation. That is not a plugin. That is a second job.

And then there are the major updates. This is where Directorist goes from frustrating to genuinely disrespectful of your time. I would spend weeks getting layouts right, working around the design limitations, writing custom code to patch the integration problems, and then a major update would roll through and flatten everything I had built like it had never existed. Not small regressions. Catastrophic, start-over-from-scratch destruction of work that represented real hours and real money. The kind of update that makes you sit at your desk and stare at your screen for a full minute before you can even begin to process what just happened.

I tried to make this work for two years because switching platforms is painful and I kept believing the next version would be the one that finally respected the investment I had already made. It never was. Every major release was a coin flip between "minor annoyance" and "your site looks like it was assembled by someone who has never seen your site."

I eventually built my own directory system from scratch. Not because I wanted to. Because Directorist made it the only rational option. The fact that building an entire custom platform was less painful than continuing to use this plugin tells you everything this review cannot.

If you are evaluating directory plugins right now, please hear me when I say this: the demo looks great, the feature list sounds impressive, and none of that matters once you start building something real on top of it. You will spend more time fighting Directorist than building your directory. That is not a tools problem. That is a product philosophy problem. And after two years, I am not convinced they know the difference.

A few misunderstanding in the starts, but the developer team , listen too my feedback and used alot extra effort too fulfill my wishes for my project:)

I even bought the lifetime subscription because i was so happy :) Directorist is one of the better directories out there and they keep doing improvements and updates:)

I recently contacted Directorist regarding their software and had a less-than-ideal experience that aligns with concerns raised by other users online. My primary issues stemmed from poor communication, slow response times, and inadequate support.

When I reached out with inquiries about their sales pricing, I received delayed responses, often taking several days. Despite multiple follow-ups, there was no one available to provide timely assistance. This mirrors similar complaints from previous buyers, who reported that the support team was unhelpful and slow to address issues.

Additionally, I encountered concerns with the software’s performance. Like others have noted, the functionality was not as described and far from user-friendly. More troubling, the software's heavy resource usage noticeably slowed down my website, raising concerns about its impact on hosting performance.

Another significant issue was the lack of detailed documentation. The sparse resources on their main website made troubleshooting difficult. This lack of clarity suggests potential underlying problems and leaves users without the guidance needed to navigate the software effectively.

In conclusion, my experience with Directorist was disappointing, marked by slow communication, poor support, and performance concerns. I hope the company will take these issues seriously and make improvements to better serve their customers.
