Their free plugins may make the best free Wordpress directory plugin. It took me days of time (and weeks in total) to setup everything since the plugin/s lacks many features, but their support forum and AI is helpful to setup custom PHP / CSS snippets. Most notable lacking features are: more diverse anti-spam protection including for a review form, easier one-click listing moderation without need to go to editor, review attachments are not visible in admin area near reviews, moderator roles, rate-limiting, duplicity protection, more attachment formats built-in setting. Some pretty handy features like tags are paid and you can not pay using cryptocurrencies.

Used the ListingHive theme and a few extensions for a local directory. Overall, it worked really well for what I needed, although I ended up making a few custom tweaks along the way (their AI bot was helpful for this). The support team was also responsive whenever I had questions, even though I was using their free theme.

One thing to keep in mind is that it offers more granular settings than other directory solutions, so it may take a bit more time to set everything up the way you want. That said, the extra level of control makes the site easier to maintain and customize over time.

As someone building a website for the first time, WordPress has been both a learning experience and a powerful platform. There is definitely a learning curve, but the flexibility and customization available is impressive. Being able to build, troubleshoot, and gradually shape a vision into something real has been rewarding. The large plugin ecosystem and support communities have also been incredibly helpful. Like any platform, patience is required, but once you begin understanding how everything connects, the possibilities feel nearly endless. Overall, a very powerful platform for anyone willing to learn and build.

I REALLY wanted HivePress to work...but it doesn't.

I'm losing track how many emails we've had to send to support, and most of their responses aren't helpful OR they push to pay a developer to actually use their plugin.

I simply don't have months to waste trying to understand all the work-around and code snippets in order to make my directory unique.

I've been using WordPress for 21 years, and I've never seen a more unorganized platform and support this weak.

I don't think HivePress is a bad product. I want to say that first because a 3-star review next to a wall of 5-star reviews can look like someone having a bad day, and that's not what this is. This is a month of honest effort from a non-developer building a tourism directory who eventually walked away.

The code is clean. The free tier is genuinely generous. The support community is active and the team responds. If you're a developer, or if your project fits neatly into one of their niche themes (rentals, jobs, freelance marketplaces), HivePress is probably a great choice. I believe the people giving it 5 stars. Their experience just wasn't mine.

My problem was the distance between the demo and the product I was trying to build. HivePress installs fast and looks professional out of the box. But the moment I started shaping it into an actual tourism directory with real listings, custom fields, and a structure that didn't match their default templates, every adjustment required CSS at minimum and PHP more often than I expected. The documentation is thin in the places where it matters most, which is the customization layer between "installed the plugin" and "built the thing I actually need." The plugin's own help center directs you to code snippets and child theme overrides for anything beyond surface-level changes. That's a legitimate approach, but it's not a no-code one, and the marketing doesn't make that distinction clearly enough.

I spent about a month trying to close that gap. I never got there. Not because the plugin broke, not because support was rude, and not because the tool is poorly made. I gave up because the time I was investing in learning HivePress's architecture was time I wasn't spending on my actual business, and after trying several other directory plugins with similar results, I eventually built a custom system from scratch that does exactly what I need.

If your project aligns with what HivePress already does out of the box, you'll probably love it. If your project doesn't, be prepared to either write code or pay someone who can. I gave it three stars because the product is solid but the gap between what it promises and what it delivers to a non-developer is wider than the feature list suggests.

Great site, I reccommended

This is by far the best directory listing plugin out there. No monthly/yearly subscriptions. Just buy it once and you're set forever. The support team is also amazing and very quick to respond to queries from community members.

The company and theme is very good at creating interactive websites, with a lot of (paid) plugins, however the double edge sword is that a lot of stling is required by css and code snippets. I eventually got it to do what i wanted with the excellect AI built in to their support pages

The theme itself is great and offers everything anyone could ask for in a classified ads site. The service itself is next level! I can't thank the HivePress team enough for their dedicated support.

The hiverental theme is the best theme I've used (in 25 years). It works like a dream and has everything you could need. Their AI assistant is the best thing since sliced bread, so helpful. Highly recommend.
