I have seen many musicals and theatre productions in London, but this was one of my most disappointing experiences.

The cast undoubtedly have some excellent voices, and vocally there were genuinely strong moments. Unfortunately, for me, these were overshadowed by the production itself.

I was not expecting a show so heavily dominated by a camp/drag aesthetic, sexualised humour, crude innuendo, vulgar gestures and deliberately provocative behaviour. To be clear, I have no issue with LGBT people, drag performance or anyone’s right to self-expression. My objection is that the advertising gave me no real indication that this would be such a central part of the production.

What might have worked as clever satire or sophisticated camp instead felt repetitive, crude and surprisingly juvenile. There was very little subtlety or restraint, and at times it felt closer to a tasteless cabaret than a polished West End musical.

I attended with my mother expecting an enjoyable evening, and we both left deeply disappointed and uncomfortable.

Audiences have different ages, backgrounds and personal boundaries. They should be given an honest idea of the tone of a show before buying tickets. Had I known what kind of production this was, I simply would not have booked it.

I attended Shamilton last Friday with three 14-year-olds, and unfortunately I came away feeling very disappointed and uncomfortable with the experience.

I had been really looking forward to the show, as had the young people I brought with me, and I purchased four tickets at £36 each. There was nothing when I booked that led me to believe the performance would contain the level of sexual content that it did.

I appreciate that Shamilton is an improvised show and involves audience participation. However, during one part of the performance the audience was asked to suggest answers and someone shouted out “masturbation”. There were other suggestions being made, so the performers did not have to choose that particular response. Once it was chosen, it was then referred back to repeatedly during the show, alongside quite a lot of other sexual humour and discussion.

What made this particularly uncomfortable was that the performers were clearly aware that children were in the audience — they even made a comment about children being present. I was there with three 14-year-olds and I also noticed at least one child who appeared to be younger.

I understand that an improvised show will naturally be unpredictable, but improvisation also means there is a choice about which audience suggestions are used and how they are developed. When it is known that children are present, I feel the performers could quite easily have acknowledged that and chosen another suggestion. The show could still have been funny, spontaneous and entertaining without repeatedly referring to masturbation and sex.

I felt embarrassed and uncomfortable sitting through this with three 14-year-olds. Had I known beforehand that the show could contain this level of sexual content, I would not have purchased four tickets at £36 each to take them.

If this type of adult or sexually explicit humour is likely to feature in the show, I believe that should be made clear at the point of booking so that parents and other adults bringing young people can make an informed decision. Alternatively, where children are known to be in the audience, I feel greater consideration should be given to the audience suggestions that are selected and developed during the performance.

I was genuinely excited about seeing Shamilton, which is why the experience was particularly disappointing. I hope you will take this feedback into consideration for future performances.

Easy and straightforward

I bought 3 tickets. I paid an extra £9 per ticket to be able to cancel for any reason. I had to cancel one. They made me cancel all 3 and rebook 2. The price for the 2 had been increased by 25%! And I did not get a refund, but a voucher. So having ended up with a voucher for £38 instead of a refund of £104. Sharks. Book direct with the theatre, don't use these people

Be very very careful, despite lots of signs on their website, often going directly to the venue is much cheaper. I bought tickets to The Nutcracker at the Coliseum via The London Box Office 'best prices' etc everywhere on their website. Have since discovered I could have saved £70 on 5 tickets by booking directly!
London Box Office is first google hit, so check directly with the venue before booking - definitely not 'best price'

Went on line to find a particular show in November at Sadlers Wells, found it without difficulty and had booked seats in about 5 or 6 minutes. Very easy and straightforward. Looking forward to seeing the show!

The online ticket purchase process is speedy and seat locations are clearly indicated. Only thing I'd change is access to 'reviews' of selected seats.

This is the first time I have used this system to book tickets. The system is simple to use but did freeze up at one stage and took some time to correct itself.
