Replacement double glazing nightmare goes on
Replacement double glazed unit fitted to existing aluminium frame june 2025. Increasing level of draughts over the winter but difficult to track down company as i had no paperwork at all. I had taped up inside but still very draughty. A neighbour saw me up a ladder trying to tape the outside and came to help me. He recognised that the dg unit was loose - it moved 10mm just with the pressure of a single finger. He felt it was very unsafe anc could fall out at any time onto the bench below the window and we then discovered that it was held in by silicon and a couple of screws. It is a very large window, requiring at least 2 strong men to handle it so i allowed my neighbour to screw into all of the places available for screws and silicon both sides. This was serious. The bank was able to give me the company details who had received the £500 . Companies house provided more details allowing me to track a new address and owner details. Mobile phone number for owner wasnt answered and when i called the company number that Sunday it disconnected. The registration was new in spring 2026 with only one of previous directors listed. Found new co address and phoned them first thing on Monday. Sympathetic on phone and offered to send out their "technical engineer" a week later. He arrived, didnt examine the window and offered to silicon again. As he had been one of the 2 men who fitted in the first place, i said no.
I phoned a week later to find out what the boss has said - he had not been told. I was told that as someone else had done something to the windows, they were not liable. If that window had fallen on me when sitting on the bench, then £500 would have been the least of this company's worries. Rain drainage system was missing so the recent storms have caused a lot of water into the room so i need to buy a whole new aluminium window, circa £1500
£500 is a lot when you live on a pension - i am now facing the loss of that £500 plus the cost of a new window. Disgusting position to find myself in
