We approached Mount Street Printers to print our wedding invites. As a designer myself, I had already spent weeks putting together a hand-painted illustrative invite, with text to be gold foiled and set the files up using Adobe.

The initial to-ing and fro-ing with Sheena took 3 weeks to have basic questions answered and a quote put together. When we got fed up of waiting for delayed responses and rang, there was an audible sigh of frustration from the other end.

The quotation was for A5 printed artwork - this was the size Mount Street had put forward and the size I worked to, assuming this was a standard size for a wedding invite, with a small business card size QR code.

Once the artwork was complete on my side (with print margins added), Sheena asked me to split the file in to layers - something which isn't usually used on Adobe Illustrator, which was a necessity due to the vector graphics of the text. Nevertheless, I did this, only to be told that actually, what was needed were two files: one for the illustration and a second for the text. This was frustratingly time consuming and unnecessary to create the first file. As requested, I changed this immediately.

We spoke to Sheena about foiling and were informed that the only swatches Mount Street had were on their website and that the colours were "not very true to life". This is particularly unhelpful. Sheena gave a reference code for a gold foil she felt would suit the bill, which I then found out this did not actually match up with any of the codes on the swatches.

During the call, we expressed that the time this had taken was leaving us with a very tight deadline and she promised she would push the invites through for us - which would take "a few days" - and keep us informed every step of the way, which made me feel less concerned and that, perhaps, we hadn't made an error choosing Mount Street Printers.

After sending the revised artwork, I was then emailed again by Sheena, asking to change the size of the file to 152 x 203mm. As the illustrations had been specifically hand painted for A5, I was confused. The quote was for A5; the files were A5 at 148 x 210 mm - why was this suddenly being changed? I raised this with Sheena and received an email a day later, with no apology, stating that their designer had indeed said I was correct at 148 x 210 mm. For a standard A5 document size, I really can't see where this confusion came from - particularly from an established printing house.

The proof arrived and looked good, although it was on single paper and not duplexed as per our order - I understand this isn't possible for a proof. The foil was also not possible to provide on the proof as a foil plate needed to be made. Again, understood, and we pressed ahead with the printing.

No such updates arrived from Sheena as promised, and when we chased a week later, one of the designers replied to inform us that the invites would now take 10 or 11 days, not the "few days" we were promised. As such, we started sending out our wedding website by text message, rather than waiting for the QR code to send out with our printed invites from Mount Street Printers, as we were losing time, which rendered our printed inserts useless.

When the invites did arrive, I noticed that these had been trimmed incorrectly, leaving a larger margin on the left side and making the invite no longer centrally aligned. This was incredibly frustrating, as I had been so precise with my design files and layout. Due to the tight time frame, I bit the bullet and began addressing envelopes, only to find that the invites did not fit the envelopes!

The A5 size invites (210mm wide) had been sent with 209.55mm wide envelopes and would never have fitted. In fact, the A5 invites were 1mm too wide, showing a lack of precision in cropping, which obviously didn't help them to fit. Again, I am shocked that an established printer did not realise this, or at least attempt to put an invite in the envelopes before sending! Due to the invites arriving just before a Bank Holiday, we were further delayed. I attempted to break open the envelopes with a scalpel to re-size these myself and send them out - unfortunately not possible.

The size of the invite, at A5 size, would have fitted in to a regular C5 envelope. When I raised this with Sheena, she informed me that Mount Street do not have these envelopes and they would need to be specially made. I pressed for a re-print of the correctly sized and trimmed invites to join the new envelopes. Unfortunately, they could not even deliver this correctly, with sloppy foiling and incorrect trimming again, leaving the invites off-centre in a new way and not as per the proof. A 50% refund was given to justify the incorrect prints.

Today, we were sent a Pinterest board by Sheena, asking if we'd like any further printing carried out. The answer is very much "no".
