Worst Parking App I’ve Ever Used

I attempted to use Parkonomy to pay for parking at Colchester Institute, but the system completely failed. Even though I got as far as confirming the payment through my banking app, nothing was processed — my car wasn’t registered and no payment was taken.

The app itself is incredibly poor. It is awkward to navigate, does not store card details (so you have to re-enter them every single time), and regularly freezes mid-transaction. On top of that, it looks and feels outdated compared to every other parking app I’ve used — none of which have given me these issues.

Unfortunately, Colchester Institute insists on using Parkonomy, otherwise I would never touch it. Without question, this is the worst parking app I have ever encountered. If I could give it less than one star, I absolutely would!

Thank you for your feedback and we are currently working on improvements to functionality and the overall look of the App and website.

We are aware, at that particular car park there are phone signal issues and sometimes this can mean the services are a little slow or can appear 'glitchy.'

From the helpdesk ticket that you sent us on 12/09/25 at 17:59, we located a Parkonomy account set up in 2019. In order to make a payment you are required to login to the account and input the correct vehicle registration number, then press 'pay now'. The system would not take any payment unless you were logged in to your Parkonomy account.

Although a payment is required on arrival to the car park, you are able to go to the Institute building and hopefully have a better signal or, in the car park and attached to the building, is a payment kiosk which also accepts card payments.

Additionally, you are able to book your parking in advance to save any issues on arrival. This can be done on our App, mobile website or desktop website.

Avoid – App Failure Leads to Unfair PCNs

I had a terrible experience with the Parkonomy app. I parked at a site using their QR code and went through the registration process. The app successfully created my account and even accepted my card details, but the payment was never processed. Despite doing everything correctly, I later received a Parking Charge Notice (PCN).

This makes it look like it’s the customer’s fault, when in reality it’s due to Parkonomy’s broken system. Their web-based app is unreliable and insecure, and clearly not fit for purpose.

It is extremely frustrating to act in good faith, try to pay properly, and still be penalised with a PCN because the app cannot complete transactions.

⚠️ My advice: If you see Parkonomy at a car park – avoid it. Their system is not capable of handling payments securely, and you are at serious risk of being unfairly fined.

Absolutely horrible experience and I am very annoyed today.

We note you mention using the QR code and subsequent issues with the App after registering. The QR code goes directly to the mobile website, it is not linked to the App which is a separate payment option.

When paying for a parking session we advise to use the SMS confirmation option and if the SMS is not received, the parking session is likely not confirmed. We always advise, not to leave the car park or your vehicle until the payment has been processed and in this case, if you were unsuccessful using one particular service, there are alternative payment solutions available. We do have an App and website and in some car parks, we have a Paybymobile service. Some car park operators also provide payment machines depending on which car park you are referring to.

It would be appreciated if you could give an example of why you believe the App is not secure and why you think payments are not handled securely - we can then investigate your concerns.

If you left your vehicle in the car park longer than a 10 minute consideration period (allowing customers to pay for parking or exit the car park) and have been issued a PCN for non-payment, unfortunately we are unable to help you with this. If you feel the PCN was issued incorrectly, there is an appeals process which should initially be followed by responding directly to the car park operator who issued the PCN or via the independent appeals process with POPLA or IAS.

On our App and website we have a customer helpdesk option which you may or may not have used previously. If you have issues in the future, always message us and we may be able to give immediate assistance and possibly avoid a PCN.

Paid and Fined, no empathy from these people

Found a parking, it was not clear that you had to pay on arrival and I wasn't sure how long we were going to be, wife was in Labour! anyway, came back paid for a days parking. Had been given a fine for not paying on arrival, sent in an appeal showing payment for the whole day. Appeal was not successful. Zero empathy from these people.

It seems you have reviewed the wrong company? Parkonomy is not the car park operator, we handle the online payments only via our App, website or Paybymobile service.

The car park operator sets the rules on whether customers should pay on arrival or exit and this would be displayed on their signs in the car park.

The car park operator may issue a PCN if customers do not follow the signs and pay when required, the car park operator also handles any appeals. Parkonomy has no input when, if or why a PCN is issued and we are not notified if that is the case.

If you would like to share with us which car park you are referring to and we may be able to offer further guidance.

Appalling App and Appalling Service

The overwhelmingly negative reviews about Parkonomy on both Trust pilot (88% 1 star) and Google play (80% 1 star) says it all. The majority of the negative reviews relate to poor App functionality.
In my case, it was a failure of their App functionality which caused the issue of a £100 PCN, which is in line with so many other comments and experiences on this site. However, there are other themes worth pointing out.
1. Parkonomy tells everyone that they respond to any emails sent to them about a failure to book parking, and that emails not received by the customer have likely gone into spam. That was the response I got from them as well, but there was nothing in my spam folder. When I asked Parkonomy (twice) to send me the email again they ignored me. This raises doubts with me that emails are always being sent.
2. They also like to conveniently distance themselves from the Parking Operator when things go wrong and claim that they have no involvement in issuing PCN's. When I paid my £100 PCN, which was issued to me by the parking operator and paid on the parking operators website, the payment on my credit card went to.........Parkonomy! So when they say they do not issue PCNs, they are not telling you the full story!
It might be worth people knowing that the Government are currently consulting with interested parties, including the public, on the poor practices of Private Car Park operators, with the purpose of raising standards across the industry. The scope of the consultation includes faulty mobile apps such as the Parkonomy app. Register your views because customer feedback can only help in forcing Parkonomy to up their game and provide a better service. Search for government consultations on private-parking-code-of-practice. Consultation is open until the 5th September.

9/8/25 - I think your comments about the emails are just part of your spam game.
Glad you are now admitting that you are part of the PCN process.
Question - Why would a payment on the operators site need to go to you? I wonder how much commission you receive on the PCN.
Your comment..."we are not a car park operator, we facilitate the payments on their behalf, we are a parking payment platform only" is one of the reasons the Government have commissioned the consultation. Your culture is the problem.

We received a further message from you on 13/06/2025 at 9.08am and responded to you on 13/06/2025 at 10:37am

We provided you the email address of the car park operator who's details are also displayed on the signs in the car park as, unfortunately, car park operators do not share with us any data when or if a PCN is issued.

You are correct, we do provide car park operators the facility for customers to pay their PCNs via our service but that revenue goes directly to the car park operator. Parkonomy does not issue PCNs, we are not a car park operator, we facilitate the payments on their behalf, we are a parking payment platform only.

With regard to the Government review of Parking Businesses - The Parking Code of Practice, we are very much part of that process and always strive to provide the best service we can to customers.

We are not part of the process of issuing PCNs, we just, and only in a small number of cases, take a payment on behalf of operators and pass that payment directly to them. Customers have every right and opportunity to pay the PCN directly with the operator. We do not receive any commission for facilitating PCN payments -

We understand, parking can be an emotive subject and we offer advice as much as we possibly can to help customers avoid PCNs but ultimately car park operators decide whether or not a PCN is justified, we have no control or input in this decision.

There is the PCN appeals process and if you've had a response which is not to your liking and you feel the PCN was issued incorrectly, you can appeal to the independent appeals service via POPLA or IAS.

Low level crime

Low level crime. Charge for booking fee , plus SMS notification and SMS reminder which I did not even received last two. These companies are trying to steal as much as they can from you on a very low level.

Parkonomy earns their money from only the booking fee and SMS confirmation/reminders, the car park tariff you pay for parking goes to the car park owner or operator, two separate businesses.

When you are making a parking session booking you are able to deselect the SMS messages if you so wish but most customers find these useful confirming the booking and reminding them the parking session is expiring.

We will of course investigate why you didn't receive the SMS messages if you can kindly provide us the mobile number you have made the car parking session with.

Absolutely shocking company, incorrectly selected the wrong car when paying for parking. Tried to contact them and received no reply via email and no number to contact them either. So I’ve paid and now still got a fine!

Crooks

This is the most useless parking company I have ever seen. I have 3 fines to pay because their system wouldn’t work, they have so customer service no helpline.
In one of the occasions I tried to pay over the phone as their website was down, the phone payment line declined all three cards I entered. Moved my car and I still got a ticket!
More recently I paid at location 1331 at the Aquatics centre manchester and I still got a ticket for “not displaying valid permit” I paid through their useless app how could I display a ticket?
I would give this company no stars absolutely rubbish.

Just to clarify, Parkonomy does not own or manage any car parks, we are an online parking payment platform with an App, website and Paybymobile service. We have a helpdesk where we respond to all customer queries promptly: www.helpdesk.parkonomy.com

Most car park operators provide a consideration period enabling customers to pay for parking or exit the car park and this time period is typically 10 minutes. We always advise, if you cannot make a payment within 10 minutes, to remove the car from the car park to avoid a possible PCN.

We are not aware of the website being unavailable at any time but if you can provide an exact date of when you experienced this issue we can investigate.

We have located your Parkonomy account and the most recent booking you have at location 1331 is in January 2025 - if you have been there since, we cannot locate a parking session booking and therefore a PCN may be issued by the operator if you have left your vehicle in the car park without paying for your parking.

PCNs are not issued by us, these are raised by car park operators and can be for various contraventions.

If you have received a PCN and you feel it has been issued incorrectly, you are able to appeal it using the instructions on the PCN or contact the car park operator directly. There is also an independent appeals service with POPLA or IAS.

Charge £5 twice for the same booking. This is second time it’s happened in a last few month. Please be careful as could end up paying twice for the same parking. Try to contact parkonomy no respond but the reviews says it all.

Your first query which you raised on 15/04/2025 at 08:44 was responded to on 15/04/2025 at 10:41 and we confirmed a refund had been made of your duplicate booking.

We received another message from you on 16/04/2025 at 07:58 and we responded on 16/04/2025 at 09:54 to re-confirm the refund had been made but it may be these messages are in your spam filter - this is outside of our control unfortunately.

Depending on which phone carrier you use, phone signal/Wi-Fi can be a challenge in some car parks but we always advise, if the payment doesn't go through promptly to not press pay again unless you have moved to a stronger signal area. In a small number of cases, duplicate bookings can occur.

The previous duplicate booking which you made was in July 2024 which was also refunded promptly.

We can see you have continued to use our service and we thank you for your custom.

Tried to park in Bridgend

Tried to park in Bridgend, downloaded app and it wouldn't lete add a card. Tried over the phone but kept cutting me off before getting to payment saying there was an error. Tried on the website but wouldn't load. Absolutely hopeless system. Had to move and park somewhere else.

I had no issues with phone signal. Add card in the app was greyed out and was unable to add a card. I followed your instructions on the board and then the text you sent me. Rang the number you sent and it hung up on me twice saying there was an error before getting to payment. Four other people in the car park at the same time were also having the same issues. You need to take notice of all the other bad reviews and sort out you systems instead of blaming your customers!

You are able to add a payment card when making a booking. On the booking screen, where it says 'payment method' you are able to add and save a bank or credit card.

Paid for parking then got message to add further parking time and wasn’t able to do this with the link they was sent!

Parkonomy this reply is further to your reply from My post to say the link wasnt working to add time to my booking and no one was available to help me at that time. So utter garbage of a response from you!

If you selected an SMS end of session reminder at the point of booking, you would receive this reminder 15 minutes before the parking session expires.

The reminder also allows you to extend the booking remotely with no need to return to your vehicle.

If you were struggling to use the extension link correctly and were unable to add further time to the booking, you are able to make a new booking to coincide with the end of the previous one.

If you are unable to use the App, there is a website and Paybymobile service also available with the instructions on our signs in the car park. Some car parks will also allow advanced bookings, enabling you to park without having to work out how to pay on arrival.

App simply doesn't work

Despite repeated attempts, trying to pay for parking with the parkonomy app just doesn't work. When I confirm the transaction in my banking app, I return to the parkonomy app to find myself on a page with a massive font with a partial message that can't be fully read, and way out - you have to kill the app. The transaction never completes.

Most other parking apps it takes a few seconds to pay. If you're a car park operator, avoid this one.

All around terrible…

App didnt work so paid on their website , recieved a confirmation txt and email but still got back to a pcn saying i didnt diaplay my ticket! 1 its a motorbike 2 theres no ticket to display as its done online!!!

If you pay via our service, you are not required to display a parking session ticket as the car park operator is notified that you have paid and your vehicle will then be on an allow list for the period you have paid for.

If you received a PCN, these are issued by the car park operator and can be for various contraventions. Parkonomy is not notified when, or for the reason why, a PCN is issued.

You are able to appeal the PCN if you feel it's been issued incorrectly.

App not working, no way to pay.

Parked in Hythe, 2 hours free by supermarket, after that charges apply. Parkonomy app would not work correctly, would not accept card details. Phone number just rings and rings. Sent an enquiry in, answered 03/02/25, unhelpful answers. It appears you cannot pay by card/app until you have paid once by phone, the one that is not answered and did not connect to an automated system. I suspect a parking fine will follow from Total Parking, who run the site. Thanks Parkonomy.

To clarify some points, you are not required to make a Paybymobile booking in order to pay by card on the App or website. The Paybymobile service is an alternative payment option.

To add a payment card to your Parkonomy account, you are required to do this as part of your first booking and on the booking screen - you cannot add a payment card on the 'my account page'.

We are unable to locate any query from you but if you send a message to helpdesk.parkonomy.com with your vehicle registration number or email address this will enable us to review our response to you and if that was suitable in the circumstances.

We always advise, if you are unable to pay for a parking session via our App, website or Paybymobile service within a 5 to 10 minute consideration period, to remove the vehicle from the car park as car park operators can issue PCNs for non-payment on their private land as per their Terms and Conditions on the signage in the car park.

If for any reason you do receive a PCN from the car park operator, this can be appealed if you feel the PCN was issued incorrectly.

You write a review complaining about the service and how people can never seem to sort the parking and then deflect and blame the car park operator on the pcn. If your instructions were better and your app worked well then there would not be a pcn charge and no need for a complaint. No option to reply on here either so I will have to continue to write new poor reviews until someone takes ownership of its failure! I have been left is financial distress over this absolute con. Avoid at all costs, seems to happen at all locations

We always advise customers, if they are unable to pay for parking within a consideration period, to move their vehicle and park elsewhere to avoid a PCN. If you left your vehicle on private land and didn't pay for parking as per the Terms and Conditions displayed on the car park operator signs in the car park, this is outside of our control.

If you were having issues paying for parking, we are always on hand to provide advice and guidance but as far as we can see, we received no request from you on our helpdesk which is easily accessible on the website and App.

If you feel the PCN was issued incorrectly, you are able to appeal it and the instructions will be on the PCN. Alternatively, you can contact the car park operator who issued the PCN as they may review the circumstances.

Awful app

Awful app. Payment never completes, the interface is glitchy, and support is nonexistent. It’s the worst parking payment experience I’ve ever had—avoid at all costs.
