Fraudulent, information is not protected

I am a therapist who got their information "scraped" from my listing on Psychology Today (for which they verified me and my license, and for which I pay a monthly fee to be listed) and, without any notice or consent on my part, my information was posted on 7 cups as if I were one of their providers. When I was alerted to this by a colleague, I attempted to utilize the 'send a message' feature on the 7cups listing for me... me the potential client got an email from 7 cups saying that me the potential therapist had been contacted. I was not contacted, that potential "client" message was never sent to me the therapist. So, this is blatant fraud. If they are comfortable misrepresenting and stealing therapist contact information, I would be VERY CONCERNED about what they are willing to do with client demographic and mental health information. I would assume that PRIVATE CLIENT DEMOGRAPHIC AND MENTAL HEALTH INFORMATION CANNOT BE TRUSTED TO BE SAFE OR CONFIDENTIAL. Never ever use 7 cups.

I strongly advise against using 7 Cups

I strongly advise against using 7 Cups, whether as a client or a professional. Our organization discovered that 7 Cups is misappropriating therapist information, falsely presenting licensed professionals as part of their network without consent or affiliation. This is not just misleading — it’s unethical and potentially illegal.

Imagine trusting a mental health platform, only to find out the therapist you're matched with may not even know they’re being advertised on the site. That’s not just dishonest, it’s dangerous. Mental health is too important to gamble on platforms that don’t respect the people or the profession.

If you care about working with verified, ethically sourced professionals, stay far away from 7 Cups. They have lost all credibility.

Sexually harrassed by a verified listener

I tried 7 Cups' listener chat. I was having a particularly low day and needed someone to talk to, so I gave it a try. The listener guided the conversation, suggesting we play truth or dare to take my mind off of the issue. That in itself felt weird, but I went along with it. The listener very quickly turned the conversation sexual, describing scenarios of them touching me. I reported the listener and got a boxed response that it would be looked into, but never received a follow-up. I reported it again and have never heard back from 7 Cups. It doesn't seem like 7 Cups takes sexual harrassment seriously at all. A horrible thought when there are many users using their service because they have trauma from sexual harrassment and assault.

I went onto 7 cups looking for a specific therapist. I received an email back right away saying they would reach out to this therapist. The email stated " we've contacted the listed service provider you selected and will keep you updated". I found this therapist on another site and reached out to her. She informed me that she does not have any affiliation with 7 cups and never received an email. This seems to be a shady business adventure

Pros and Cons

Honestly, most of it is great. It’s got a great concept and quite a lot of great people. The issues come in two forms, technical issues and people abusing this site. I am Spanish, for at least a week and a bit there has been a issue with tildes, any tilde you put gets changed into the code for it, which is rather annoying, in addition to this the app has lazy translating that doesn’t even reach the whole app. Now the biggest issue is the amount of people who try to abuse this app, this is not the apps fault but it still affects the experience and makes it unsafe for minors to be using this app. Otherwise it’s great I really recommend it : ) also Im tired so this might be a dramatic review

7cups stole my information

I am a licensed mental health therapist. 7cups stole my marketing material from advertising I paid for and made a profile for me as a provider on their site without permission to use my name or credentials. I requested to be removed from their website and they did not remove my profile after saying they would. This website is a scam.

Fraudulent Business Practices and Marketing

I'm a mental health professional. 7 Cups used publicly available information about me and hundreds of other therapists on their site without our consent. We are not affiliated with the platform in any way, nor do we receive any communication/referrals from them. This is a blatant attempt to use our information to fraudulently bolster their credibility, giving the impression that hundreds of therapists utilize and/or endorse their platform. We do not. Our information appears to have been scraped from publicly available - legitimate - sources and rewritten to avoid detection or revealing the source of the information. They have not yet publicly said where this information was obtained.

They seem to be minimally responsive to therapists asking for their data to be removed.

They appear to be operating in untrustworthy ways and I can only recommend avoiding them.

False advertising

Company used my profile to advertise without my permission. Have asked twice for them to remove it and they have not responded. I am not, nor have I ever been, connected with this company an any way. They are using my information as a bait and switch tactic to fool consumers. 7 Cups will respond to this review explaining that they use this info to provide referrals to therapists that they list. This is not at all true!!! I had a friend request to be connected to the person listed on the profile (me) and 7 cups said they would reach out to the therapist, but in the meantime told the consumer (my friend) how to use their services and provided a link to do so. I was never contacted by 7 cups stating that they had a referral for me. Do not believe their response to my review, as it is simply not true.

Dear Marina,

7 Cups is the world’s largest mental health community. We have over 570,000 trained volunteer listeners across 189 countries that provide support in 140 languages. We have reached over 73 million people. Often, we need to make referrals to licensed clinicians, shelters, and food pantries. That is why we built our provider directory and local support service. We are now starting to make referrals to local clinicians.
The goal of the local support systems (7cups.com/local) is to connect people online to services offline so they can get better help. We believe therapists are an important part of local support systems.
I understand that you may have reasons for wanting to be removed, but I wanted to share some additional context that you might find helpful. 7 Cups sends out thousands of free referrals to therapists every month. If someone were to complete the contact form on your profile, we would forward their information to you for follow-up. This would essentially be a free referral for you. We operate similarly with food pantries and shelters, as our goal is to connect people with local resources in their community.
We are providing therapists the option of a free premium month of being listed on 7 Cups to gain additional referrals. We are also providing this premium service to therapists free of charge if they cannot afford it as we think it is important for therapists to get referrals and build their practice. We want to feature as many therapists we can as part of the local support system.
We respond within 48 hours so if you emailed support@7cups.com and haven't heard back from us, please feel free to send a followup, and we'll do our best to process your request ASAP.
Best regards,

Fraudulent - not to be trusted

Beware! 7 Cups scrapes information from the websites of unaffiliated therapists and posts it fraudulently on their website as if these therapists work for them. They are spreading misleading information to people who are just trying to find a therapist! If you're searching for a therapist, consider trustworthy sites like Psychology Today or Open Path Collective.

Unethical company

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Maryland and discovered yesterday that I am listed on 7 Cups' website. I did not give permission for 7 Cups to use my name and information. This is a blatant way to attract people to their website by posting information gleaned from Psychology Today without my permission. (The write up they have about me is written in the third person, but is very close to what I wrote for my Psychology Today listing.) Listing licensed therapists (who have not given permission for their information to be used by 7 Cups) attracts people to their website, even though 7 Cups offers unlicensed “active listeners” with no training in providing psychotherapy to people who are clearly looking for licensed therapists. They are trying to attract therapists to join their network by asking them to pay monthly fees for the listing (once they learn about your listing and contact you to remove it), but this is clearly a bait and switch technique that does damage to everyone's reputation. It is duplicitous to post my information as if I am part of their network and say the client can “contact me,” when, in fact, they don't pass on the client’s message at all. (Yes, 7 Cups put a small disclaimer at the bottom, but many people are likely to not read it.) I know of someone who tried to contact me because of being on the 7 Cups website, but I was not contacted by them, even though the potential client wrote to me on that website. It was only because of their perseverence that I did not lose a potential client to 7 Cups' dishonest practice.

UPDATE TO REVIEW, 3/28/25:
In your reply (below) to my initial review, you state " If someone were to complete the contact form on your profile, we would forward their information to you for follow-up." THIS IS NOT TRUE. Someone DID complete the contact form for me and I have NOT received any information about it from you.

Unethical Scam

I am a psychotherapist licensed in NY and CT. Yesterday, I discovered that 7 Cups had scraped my profile for their website. I have never worked for 7 Cups, and I promptly requested that they remove my profile through their Customer Service Department. I received an email that they would respond to me within 48 hours and I am waiting.
I also sent an inquiry as a client about connecting with me, the provider, via 7 Cups, to which I received this email: "Thanks for using the 7 Cups directory! We’ve contacted the listed service provider you selected and will keep you updated. In the meantime, did you know that 7 Cups is the world’s largest emotional support community, with millions of members and over 500,000 trained volunteer listeners? Whether you’re looking for someone to talk to or resources to support your well-being, we’re here for you," followed by a link to click on to choose other services within 7 Cups. 7 Cups never contacted me as a provider to alert me to this inquiry.
This reminds me of the bait and switch scheme, that CareDash ran several years ago, when people were directed to profiles of therapists who had not consented to be a part of CareDash, and when clients inquired about working with these therapists, they were directed to BetterHelp therapists instead.
Please beware of this unethical practice. You can read more about the lawsuit and settlement between 7 Cups and the state of California that highlights some of the dangers on Mashable. Search for 7-cups-tech-suite-california-deal.

Deceptive, misleading, exploitative

I am a licensed psychologist and have never consented to the use of my name or practice information by 7 Cups. Their website listing and exploiting the names and practices of licensed mental health therapists (who are not informed, have not given consent for this use and are NOT a part of 7 Cups) is extremely misleading and deceptive to people looking for mental health care. I have formally requested that 7 Cups cease the use of my name and practice.

Illegally using therapists identities to prop themselves up as a legit service.

I am a licensed therapist and 7 cups is using thousands of therapists identities without their permission on their website. This is illegal and needs to be recognized as such. Just use Psychology Today to find a reputable therapist in your area. Additionally, there are no such things as 'active listeners' and the training that this volunteers go through is not mentioned anywhere on the website.

7cups has my information listed without my permission. I am a licensed therapist in IL. While they have a disclaimer at the bottom of the listing indicating I don't work for them, they do not indicate that the information was posted without my permission. Why would you trust your mental health to a dishonest site? What else are they doing without permission?

I have let 7 cups know I don't want to be listed on their profile! That was more than 48 hours ago. And my profile is still there. I had a client reach out to me from 7 cups site, but the client's email never got to me because they kept it. They claim on their website that I speak Italian, which I don't, again demostrating that they are just making stuff up. STAY AWAY FROM THEM!!!!
