Have had several issues
Have had several issues with high deductible HSA plan.
1. Last year paid $30 copay for primary Care. This year $208 because haven't met deductible.
2. Resolution of a bill received by hospital for 1/24/24 surgery that hospital resubitted 3 times, adjusting dollar amounts, under 2 claim it's. Ultimately bill 11 months after surgery with monthly calls to Aetna to resolve, although has stated we dont owe anymore, I was sent to collections. No one at Aetna owned the issue. Now have formal complaint entered. Told 7-10 days for callback, when called on day 11 told 30 calendar day to respond.
3. Denial RX twice. First was due to not having info that is never been asked before for this medication.
Horrible customer service, Horrible management when people have issues, no call backs, no owning an issue. I'm pretty low key and understand a lot but not this.
Coming closer to retirement and I know one company that won't be considered for supplemental insurer.
Avoid Aetna at all cost - deny, delay and defend company
I had to switch my insurance from Priority Health (who I give a 4.5 star review) to Aetna at my company. I had been on some prescriptions for more than two years and Aetna employed the deny, delay and defend tactic to avoid having to pay. My doctor filed for a continuation of care authorization with documentation showing I met all their specified criteria. They denied it. I called and spoke to their international call center (horrible communication) and they couldn't tell me the specific reason for the denial. They suggested we appeal with more documentation. My doctor submitted more documentation as part of the appeal. The appeal was denied, but only provisionally (to prevent being able to go to an external review). I called and talked to the international call center for over an hour to try to get a clear answer of what they required. I then submitted every possible health record supporting my claim - note that I am very clearly within their criteria for the medication. They continued to deny but without giving me a final disposition. If you have a choice at all, DO NOT go with Aetna. They are among the worst at communication and will avoid allowing your claim until your either give up or die.

Aetna's customer service is PATHETIC
Aetna's customer service is PATHETIC. I have been trying to get my prescription refills for 3 weeks now and they keep saying that I have another insurance coverage that is primary. I went through the same issue back in December 2025 and thought they had gotten it fixed then. BOY was I wrong, same issue when it came time to refill again. Since I am required to go on Medicare, and bought a supplemental from Aetna, why would I buy more coverage? IF I ever am able to get them refilled, it will make 8 trips to pick up my meds which I still don't have. They keep telling me the issue has been fixed, which at this point it still hasn't been. There is no follow up on Aetna's part to verify that things have been fixed. Find a different company.

Pay, pay some more, the bill has been paid, but they keep billing regardless
Zero stars if anything. They keep billing me regardless that I've paid off the 111.03 for my Levothyroxine capsules, and I have. So now another bill for March, 2026 (I'm no longer a member). Their Advantage Plan is no longer in existence. I figured out a few months ago, they will keep billing me regardless of whether I'm paid up or not. I have copies of my credit card statements and the cashed checks from my bank that proves that I've paid this bill and will need to contact my credit card company and NYS Financial Affairs division... they just transferred me again, they're screwing around with me all over again...I've spent another 2 hours with them on the phone this evening... honestly, they don't care whether this is resolved, period. So, now after another 2 hours on the phone on hold with crazy music in the background, I'm on hold again. It's not like Aetna Exec's don't know these people they pay nothing to aren't worthless, they know that, that's how they keep cashing in.
I called another number. The woman acknowledges that I'm pay in full that I will be receiving another bill in April, that will hopefully show a zero balance... I told her to please review all the calls I've made in regard to all of this, because the first woman I spoke to this evening was telling me that I hadn't paid my June or some other last year's month's bill when it really has been paid off.
Ok, summary: I thought I had paid the bill in full last year with a check that was cashed for 77.73. I'm fairly certain I received an invoice with a zero balance thereafter. Done. Well in Nov or Dec of last year I get another bill for 11.10, I'm pretty upset. I had thrown out the last invoice, and I'm calling them over and over again getting nowhere for a few months, then call my credit card company and get a copy of the cashed check from my bank. I can only find 2 c. card payments, so maybe they made a mistake last year and I owed more than 77.73. I sent them another check for 11.10. That was cashed, now proof the entire bill is paid. But the bill today for another 11.10 for March this year, that really set me off. At least 2 hours on the phone, and finally someone verifying my bill is paid in full. The point is that they messed up last year at least, and their c.s. people don't care if they pass you around all day and night, I had to call another number to get this resolved, but yet, it may not be as I thought it was last year with a zero balance invoice... no matter what you say or do, the mentality of whom you're dealing with doesn't change, and again, those at the top profit off the time their lowly customers try to resolve issues they don't spend any time on at all, they're focused on ripping off the greatest amount of people for the biggest share of profits.

Terrible company . They put me on Wegovy with my previous doctor. I have since moved and have a new doctor and they denied the doctors claim because they say I have not made progress and do not have a good outcome with the drug. This is simply a lie it does not account for the fact is most weight loss was under my last doctor. My weight is now rising again but they will not listen. They offer no alternative or help.I'm only still with them as my employer has no other option.

When I checked what my coverage is for 2026 I was told by two different representatives that my transportation would not change ! So after reviewing the coverage I decided to stay with Aetna. Apparently the two people I spoke with had no idea what they were talking about because I was not told the truth! I've already taken two to three rides this year that I was told was covered, BUT, now I am being told that I DO NOT have transportation? That was the reason I stayed with Aetna, so wrong 😕 😔 I checked twice to confirm the coverage but apparently the representative can say anything they want and I am held accountable for their actions. When the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing, that's how you get so many different answers from them. Just WRONG! Switching to a different company.

Paying a Fortune for the Privilege of Being Denied
I have been an Aetna customer for some time now and I am beyond frustrated. For the amount I pay in premiums every month, I expect a basic level of service, what I get instead is a company that seems laser-focused on finding every possible reason NOT to pay a claim.
The nitpicking is unreal. Claims that should be straightforward get flagged, questioned, or denied over the most trivial technicalities. Missing a single code, a slightly different procedure description, anything and suddenly it’s grounds for rejection. You have to fight for every dollar of coverage you were promised when you signed up.
And don’t even get me started on the website. It is unreliable at best and completely non-functional at worst. Trying to file a claim online turns into a multi-day ordeal because the portal goes down constantly. You log in, start the process, the site crashes, and you have to start all over again, sometimes multiple times. For a major insurance company in 2026, this is embarrassing.
It feels very much like the business model is: charge maximum premiums, create maximum obstacles, pay out minimum benefits. The hoops you have to jump through are clearly designed to exhaust you into giving up.
I would not recommend Aetna to anyone who actually wants to USE their health insurance rather than just technically have it.

I would give a 5 if I didn't have such a terrible experience with Dr Lemaster (PO) and Dr. Potts ((Ormond Beach ) the 2 primaries I had. The specialists were great but I had to get referrals from them to specialists and had to use my neuro to bypass the NOs I got from them (I have political X account and they wanted me off the Internet which I said had nothing to do with my healthcare but they disagreed and I suffered but that's what they MEANT to do !! Addict behavior towards a patient they didn't know from a hole in the wall they're creepy and cruel doctors so I switched to Humana now to Island Docs which have been good 👍.so far but held my end stage hoshimotos thyroiditis up and a spinal injection I needed since my spine collapsed.
Cruel and unusual behaviors and I called to complain but it was already over 60 days so nobody cared to take a complaint and now patients with independent political views will be tortured if they find out during normal conversation and if I don't do something. I'm doing this review to tell you BEWARE if you live in Central Florida ....if the misfits you'll be subject to...they went as far as wanting me to see a psychiatrist telling me I didn't have ANY autoimmune diseases yet I have 3 !! I cannot give it a negative review so I had to select 1 star. I have been fighting uphill on my own for my Ozempic that I take due to me being diabetic. They seem to be under the impression I take this for weight loss. A1C at 9.6 and prior authorization gets denied. I call and no o r can answer any questions. My doctors office is as useful as a toothache as well so it me against Aetna. I have to say, I wouldn’t recommend Aetna to cover a gold fish let alone a person. Unfortunately this is what my employer uses. I’ve been disconnected lied to run around and much more. Horrible service and experience

Denied a claim my doctor said was medically necessary
My physician submitted a prior authorization for a procedure she has been recommending for over a year. Aetna denied it twice, both times with a generic letter citing lack of medical necessity, directly contradicting the written recommendation of the doctor who has been treating me for three years. The appeals process is designed to exhaust you into giving up and I genuinely believe that is intentional. Paid premiums faithfully for four years and the one time I needed real coverage they found every reason not to provide it.

I am a nc state employee. Last year, our state goverment change all state workers' insurance from Blue Cross Blue Shield to aetna .and all NC state workers are paying for it literally with higher prescription prices and outrageous deductibles.In short aetna sucks. The people who run the nc goverment dont care about state employees, and it's very sad we haven't had a raise as state employees in 2 years. The only thing they gave us was this terrible insurance

I would not recommend Aetna to anyone!! For the last month, despite of multiple phone call and voice messages; Aetna has failed to resolve a very critical problem. Their negligence has jeopardized the son’s chronic health issues. We have not been able to schedule a crucial infusion due to their incompetence and inability to provide reliable costumer service. Aetna negligence is a liability to your love ones health!! 😡
Aetna is killing me
Aetna is killing me, literally.
Six months ago my doctor, a medical professional, prescribed a weight loss medication due to high blood pressure and diabetes which was either denied or, Aetna claims, my doctor office didn’t fill out the paperwork properly.
Initially told our insurance doesn’t cover the medication, we switched plans to one that covered it only to be told in a different conversation with Aetna that the medication WAS covered under the old plan but the doctor office didn’t fill out the paperwork properly which.
I take several different medications each day and my doctor’s office has had no problems filling out that paperwork…
So we now pay more for our insurance for something that was actually covered under our old plan.
The new plan, which we chose specifically because it did cover the newly prescribed medication, has now been denied under our new plan.
So, we now pay more for our health insurance due to bad information from Aetna and they are now denying my new prescription under the new plan, and the medication is prescribed by my doctor, a medical professional, which Aetna is not, prescribed by my doctor who looks out for my best interests, which Aetna does not.
I pointed out that my A1C and high blood pressure might cause me to have a stroke or heart attack which would be hundreds of thousands or possibly millions of dollars in medical bills, specialists, rehab services, wouldn’t it be prudent to get me the medication that would prevent such things as well as the stress and anxiety for myself and my family by having a stroke or heart attack?
What message does their denial send?
I would say it is that they are not interested in my health.
I did offer to stop exercising, I actually work out twice a day so if I am doing that and my numbers aren’t improving that might indicate I need more help.
This is not for cosmetic reasons.
And not only have I offered to stop exercising, I’ve committed to eat poorly in order to meet their numbers required to obtain this type of medication but have not heard back from them.
I’ve had health insurance my whole adult life and consider myself fortunate for that.
Aetna is so poorly run, provides shoddy, inaccurate information, costs their clients money unnecessarily and is more concerned with making money themselves than providing care for their clients.
I would advise others, if you have a chance to not have Aetna as a provider, take it. As soon as my wife and I can leave Aetna, we will. I urge others to do so as well.
