The magic and artistry of incense making is quite different from perfumery and I would suggest more dangerous. You don't have the immediacy of a testing strip. You can't add a drop later after an incense has dried, the mistakes are more expensive when a batch goes wrong... The mastery is that decision that must be made predicting how the incense will evolve from batter birth to maturity. Because it never comes out exactly like the wet batter. First the incense must dry and some materials fair better with age soaking up the gloriousness around them. Other incense materials are just better fresh. Then the variable of warming, heating, burning? A charcoal? That choice changes the entire ceremony and disposition. Nothing hippie-dippy about it. I made the transition myself from burning to a heater years ago when I recognized that my lungs couldn't tolerate the smoke.
