Just tried doing an exam online and after an hour I was still on the diagnostic equipment checks, what a waste of time. Not their fault just no good for computer novices.

The revision material is a bunch of questions. it doesn't tell you where the answers are so you cant easily educate yourself. Some of the questions are about using the right H&S language rather than ensuring safety. I hate that, but will do it cos I have to.
MAPs test is a joke and totally irrelevant for most management and consulting roles. Working in Fire Safety only, I have no day to day involvement in half of the subjects it’s asking for but at least CITB are making plenty of money out of the tests and revision materials. When would a Fire Safety consultant get involved with soils and road closures. Get a grip!
Hopefully this is a balanced review of the CSCS card requirement for the CITB MAP test process. I've been in the Construction industry for 20 years and this is the second time of taking this test. Firstly it's not easy and isn't meant to be. Some key points:
- There is no shortcut
- You can't wing it
- You must revise
- The CITB test isn't the issue
- The standard is high
My first reaction was the difficulty and passmark was ridiculous and unfair. Lots of swearing, shouting and frustration later....... I needed to pass the test so had no choice but to put the work in. It took me two weeks to get to a position to take the test. I revised each day using the app with a mixture of smart practice questions, reviewing my problem questions and mock exams.
I passed the test today with 49/50 (98%) but i had to work hard for it. Looking back using the app isn't just about the test its to bring you up to the correct standard so it's actually H&S training and you must put the work in to pass. I know a lot more now than i did before i started the process so that must be a good thing.
In summary:
- It isn't a nice process
- Put the revision in
- Download the app
- Give yourself time
- Don't be a know-all
- Prepare and only take the test when you are ready
- I might take 3+ weeks to prepare for the test
I hope this helps anyone who is planning to take the MAP test and good luck!

The current MAP test has raised the bar too high. No wonder the industry has a growing lack of decent managers. Those who are not necessarily knowledgeable in construction management but who are good at remembering key phrases and who are exam saavy will pass but older, experienced will just get out of the industry and thats the travesty of the whole thing. CITB you need to practice what you preach when it comes to inclusively, your driving out good experienced managers with this test. You will be typical CITB with your typical CITB answers that this was industry lead but I would love to know what type of person you get feedback from because everyone I know doesn't want half the things you impose on us employers and industry veteran's but I'm beginning to realise that our voice never counts and counts even less with Tim Balcon at the helm.

I really don't understand what all the fuss is about, we are supposed to be professionals. If you are a site manager a lot of the questions are things you deal with day in day out, and a little bit of studying for a week or two and you should sail through the test. If this is to difficult for you it may well be you are in the wrong job
I needed the CITB HS&E MAP certificate to work on the site of my new job.
I used the £6.99 app to revise.
The test is aimed at Managers & Professionals, as the name suggests, and covers many different areas and disciplines of the construction industry. To pass, you need to demonstrate an understanding of each, because your responsibilities could involve all parts and phases of a construction project.
I found the test a challenge but I put in 1-2 hours most days over 3 weeks focusing on my problem questions until I was confident. I suppose if it was easy, it wouldn't be worth doing.
I will also plug the Pearson Vue test centre at Waveney Chambers in Lowestoft - helpful and professional.
I found the language of the new test is terribly confusing and vague as a non native speaker. Level of detail expected from the delegate about the specific trades is not reasonable. This test will cause problems for the companies.
Edit: after revising the appstore app for 1 week and memorising all questions, I passed with 100%. I learnt something I guess, but new test is built on word games...

Have passed the test from first attempt, regardless that most people are complaining about it being too difficult. Yes, there are so many questions have very obvious more than one right answer, but you have to choose one only. And at most cases questions are being tricky just to confuse, which doesn’t make any additional value to it.
Host, overall concept and way to use it is right, and remember that this test for managers, not beginners, so you need to have experience and patience and you will pass it.

Stupidly difficult test for Managers and Professionals. This updated test will be very disruptive to the industry and negatively impact many areas.
It is very irresponsible of CITB to not properly trial the test before implementing it as it seems I'm not the only one with this opinion. I'm 54 and have never had a problem passing a CSCS test, before now.
Having said that, the retakes will be very profitable for stakeholders. I encourage others to complain to the CEO of the CITB.
Update 13/11/23...Still practising and still failing. This is singularly the most depressing thing I have done since I had cancer treatment. Life is too short. I may just give up (not on life) and sack the industry off altogether.
Updated 14/11/23
Still failing and becoming more depressed. This is so demoralising. Considering the implications of stress within the industry, CITB seriously needs to review and update this test. Before someone gets hurt!

I am a MSc in OH&S Risk management with distinction (97%) and I had a 87% mark in my first test. The questions are ridiculous and tricky for a foreign like me. I am actually happy about CITB increasing the difficulty of the test, but this is quiet above the line.

Antwoord van CITB
I just sat the test and passed first time with 100%. However, like many others have commented previous, the test itself needs reviewing, as there are so many questions where the correct answer could quite easily be another (changed by moving a few words around!) The test is trying to cover too many areas of expertise! The whole card system need to be rewritten specific to the field that manager is in. Even though I acheived maximum marks, I certainly won't retain half of the irrelevant information contained in the answer bank. If the test remains without a review, it would be fair to lower the pass mark to 40.
Top tip exam writers....ovehall required with specific exams written for some specific fields of expertise. If a person changes to a specific field their previous card won't be valid, which means they should then apply for a new card specific to their new role😉👍

Surprise Surprise! another SMSTS course cancelled due to limited people on the course, I've only wasted 11 months trying to complete a CITB 5 day course. But as CITB say, its for my benefit because there is group work during the course
🤣.
What would be a benefit, would be that the course actually commences, so I could finally become fully qualified 🤔
CIOB Construction Management degree completed,
3 Day first aid at work completed.
Vehicle banksmam completed. CITB SMSTS can't even get a course to start.
I've spent all year being let down repeatedly by various training providers because they have to follow CITB remit on numbers of people attending the course.
CITB say it is because there is group work! How can an organisation function like this? Quick to collect levy's but slow to help people enter the construction Industry.
Appsolutly disgusted and shocked!

I'm booked on the HS&E test on Monday as a trial, but I don't hold out much hope.
Myself and 6 other service engineers took a mock test on Friday and we all failed terribly. Bearing in mind I got a 100% score on my previous two HS&E tests years ago!
Ridiculously over complicated and poorly written questions many with similar answer options, and deliberate "trick" questions.
A guy labouring on a building site does NOT need to know that legionnaires disease is a bacterial infection of the nervous system. It's unlikely he has a degree in biology. Leave that to the hospital doctors if he catches it.
Reading these questions makes me realise just how far disconnected CITB and "the health and safety experts" who wrote these questions are from real life.
This is not a helpful or beneficial exercise for anyone.
Anyone not speaking English as a first language or someone with learning disabilities would have no hope passing this test.
I will make a decision next week as to whether it's worth the time, stress, and expense pulling our service engineers off the road to revise utter nonsense in order to sit a test of irrelevant questions they will likely fail.
This would mean we withdraw from the CSCS card scheme and would have to stipulate this to our customers at the job quoting stage.
Thankfully the CSCS card is only requested in perhaps 20% of jobs.
I understand all of this will fall on deaf ears as reading your responses to other comments you are obviously never wrong!

Wow. This test is awful.
My partner is a non-native English speaker with a degree in Civil Engineering. He is looking for a job in the construction industry to gain some UK experience.
Since he has a degree, this is the test he must complete... and he has yet to pass a mock test. He has been complaining about how difficult it is and how he doesn't understand half of it, and I just thought he was being dramatic... and then he challenged me to take a mock test myself (I'm a Mechanical Engineer, so while construction related H&S isn't my wheelhouse I figured I'd at least understand the questions, you know?). It was so difficult! There are so many grammar mistakes in these questions I had to read them through three or four times, and then was stumped when two out of the four possible answers appear to be exactly the same but for an oxford comma. If I'm struggling to pick out the correct answer, how is a non-native English speaker?
Unfortunately, when going through the CSCS card-finder it really does seem that the only test my partner can take is the MAP, all because he has a degree.
My partner will NOT be managing anyone and does NOT need to be aware of the specific form title to complete in the case of a nuclear waste spill (to counter the reply I have seen on so many of these comments), he just wants some UK construction experience. He is being forced to complete this test in particular (which doesn't include the option for a translator) just because he has a degree (and why should he have to complete a lower level qualification just to be able to sit a lower level H&S test?).
I'm just amazed at how poorly written these questions are! How many people are going to lose their jobs over this CITB error? And how many, like my partner, are you preventing from even entering the construction workforce?

I have just started revising using the app and must admit, I am shocked at how hard this has been made. Many of the questions have been written ambiguously, designed to trick and some open to interpretation. I would also go further to say irrelevant and not necessary to know.
Example
Which form number must be submitted to the enforcing authority for a reportable occupational disease ? Who really knows this off their top of their head. Come on be realistic?
I have tried to screen shot others to no avail.
I have read a few reviews and you get a very standard response “The questions and revision content were developed by qualified HS&E experts and are designed to meet the minimum criteria required by CSCS.”
To give some context I have bene in the industry 20 plus years, working as a manager I have a NEBOSH construction certificate Amongst others, and generally find tests relatively easy. I have not passed on the app yet. It certainly looks like the qualified HS&E experts are all having a good snigger on how cleaver they are. Well done.
I will pass, as I will just put the time in to revise but within a month most will be forgotten as not required and irrelevant to my role, as some trade specific etc.
The issue will be all my supervisors and the industry, I feel many will fail and continue to fail as the test is not proportionate and realistic. And with an industry already suffering from a significant shortfall in labour this will only compound the issue. And lead to either people leaving the professional industry and going to more general builder roles (domestic) or the dodgy test centres materialising again.
It also I feel has an adverse effect on Health and Safety perception, Which is obviously counterintuitive.
Some of my feedback
• Stop with the trick questions make them more reader friendly. (HS&E experts we all know you’re clever no need to endeavour to try to prove it)
• Stop with the questions that have all right answers but some more right than others. Some of these questions are open to interpretation.
• We do not need to know form numbers.
I apricate this will fall on deaf ears and be replied with a standard justification. But we can live in hope.
Mislead from the start. Over charged from the start. I’ve never known such a con. Nothing is made clear throughout the process.

Thoroughly enjoyed the test found it too easy. " THIS WILL NEVER BE A TRUE STATEMENT " like most of the other reviews i agree that the test is too difficult and half the questions are irrelevant to a managers role. Some are specialist questions on specialist forms and legislation to which most managers would well let's make it easy " HIRE A SPECIALIST COMPANY " Peoples jobs are on the line with this test. I personally failed then 2 weeks later passed but if i sat it today would possibly fail again depending on the role of the dice with questions. This is a memory test not a managers test. Lower the pass rate or make the question related more to the industry and give specialists a seperate test.
Yours Stuart

I am pleased that the CITB have replied to my review of 5th September and glad that they have removed the ridiculous question that I highlighted, but I am afraid that their response is inadequate and the reply itself is contradictory!
In their second paragraph they use the trite response of 'the questions were developed and are being reviewed by qualified H&SE experts with years of construction industry experience', etc, etc!
However, the third paragraph agrees that the question I have highlighted is nonsense and so has been removed forthwith from all future tests!
The fourth paragraph goes on to say they are collating and reviewing feedback and and taking remedial action. A little late don't you think!
The fifth paragraph ask for us to send screenshots and further examples of useless questions to continue their review - which I shall be doing - and I'm only about a third of the way through their practice App!
So a couple of things spring to mind here - 1) All of the 'experts' who have compiled and authorised the launch of this test should return their fee. 2) Those of us who are actually involved in the management of construction projects who are repeatedly pointing out the errors in this garbage should be paid for their consultancy!
It is clear that this new version should never have been inflicted upon the industry without some peer review or focus-group testing.
While this nonsense continues, many managers will continue to fail their tests, be unable to renew their cards and could potentially lose work or even employment because of this disastrous V9 revision.

I used to be a civil engineering site engineer and then site manager but have been running my own surveying business for 20 years. I recently had to apply for a new card and ordered the test book as I have done in the past. It became increasingly apparent that the current test is far more difficult than it ever was before and the nature of the questions - many of the answers are so similar that its really down to semantics as to which answer is correct. Also, the knowledge required is far in excess of what I use on a day to day basis - I have nothing to do with site management any more and yet I am expected to know about CDM regulations, H&S law, specialist activities, high risk activities etc.
So I thought maybe I could apply for a site engineers card or engineering surveyors card, because that's the job I do when I am on site right? But no! The card finder app wont let me enter a degree in civil engineering as a relevant qualification for either of these two jobs!! Because I have a degree you are forcing me into a managers and professionals test where I will have to learn or memorise hundreds of questions about subjects that a largely irrelevant in my day to day working life. What is the point of this? And why is a degree not a suitable qualification for a site engineer or engineering surveyor?
