The new pricing structure doesn't work…
The new pricing structure doesn't work for me but I do understand its take it or leave it. Fragmentation of packages, adding features that I do not use. However, I love the software and the support. Just seems to be more profit driven than service oriented.

Becoming Expensive
Drake Software has become ridiculously expensive for a small tax office. Just the same, renewed for another year as it is an easy to learn and use tax product.

Drake used to be top notch budget…
Drake used to be top notch budget software, but lately their customer service has suffered a massive decline, their user interface for data entry took a major step back in 2025, and now for 2026 they are asking me to pay $1000 more for the annual package. So I'm paying significantly more for significantly less.
Comparatively the price is still good making it difficult, along with the learning curve for my staff, to make a change but I was tempted this year. The decline has been unfortunate though.

Drake is excellent for the basic…
Drake is excellent for the basic returns - personal; partnership, S-Corp. Training is mostly great. Customer support is outstanding. Darke falls down on 990 returns - no training video's; limited to non-existent FAQ's/documentation; no training video's. Drake should consider interviewing new to Drake individuals to better understand issues - easy solves in training videos; FAQ's; etc. Have friends who have limitedly converted to Drake - they have issues and I do. Many easy solves. In some cases, Drake is far better to former tax software but Drake does not understand (in my opinion) how to highlight all their capabilities. We all run into that issues - forget that we have competitive differences because its something we do everyday.

Not happy with the corporate merger, etc.
Not happy with the corporate merger and the new Taxwell parent company. The user experience is becoming more "corporate" and less "personal". Customer service reps are more detached and less qualified. Don't like the EULA's and the principles behind them.
The software still works pretty well, but there have been small changes year-over-year which actually increased user friction (Taxwell's claims notwithstanding), were not improvements, and represented a lack of product stability.
Haven't found a good alternative yet, but definitely looking...

I have been with Drake for many years…
I have been with Drake for many years 30+
MOST importantly SERVICE. This year was not a fun year, with all the tax changes I can understand but I've called in more times this year than the 30 yrs total i think, due to so many flaws and error codes.
Service was not as good as it should of been- I had to call back 3 times with one issue.
I do hope this area improves.

Not What They Used to Be
Drake Software was known for great customer service, a decent (but somewhat limited) tax prep software and affordable pricing for smaller customers.
Support has deteriorated. I'm often having to teach them about how their product works. They usually do little more than read aloud from their knowledge base.
The product has slowly continued to improve, but pricing has nearly doubled in the past few years. It's becoming expensive enough where it's causing me to consider alternatives. I would hate to do that since I do feel at the end of the day, this company does care about it's customers. It's just making it difficult for us to stick with them.
