We've applied to over 200 VCs and angel networks, and the reality is that most simply ignore applications unless they have a strong pre-existing connection. The few that do engage are typically those with a genuine interest.

I really like Laurence and Found's approach to funding early stage start ups. They didn't end up offering us the cash but progressed us to one of their later stages. I really appreciated the detailed feedback they provided on why they both thought we had a great business but it wasn't for them given what their criteria is. This is something that is challenging as a founder when you (naturally) receive so many nos with not much more than lip service paid to feeding back why. Consistent feedback would have helped us refine our approach and get money faster I believe (which thankfully we now have) - so a change in approach could have a significant impact on the velocity of early stage UK businesses.
