We booked a tour of the Grand Canyon…
We booked a tour of the Grand Canyon with the former Vacation by Rail. While waiting in the lounge of Grand Central Station we learned about the flash flooding in the Grand Canyon. We learned from fellow travelers, not our travel company. We were contacted once on the train. We were told the hotels in the park were closed to guests due to not having water.
I understand emergencies happen. I understand our hotel had to changed. I do not have an issue with the hotel switch. We were told we would be staying in Williams for our entire stay instead of two nights within the park. I didn't realize, at the time, staying in Williams meant our time in the Grand Canyon would be so very limited.
Our transportation in and out of the park was limited to the train schedule. The train goes into the park once a day (arrives at approx noon) and leaves the park once a day by 3:30. Each trip took 2.5 hours. That meant 5 hours on a train for 3 hours within the park.
Other travelers who were also affected by the closure were relocated to a park right outside the park entrance. That enabled them to spend entire days within the Grand Canyon while we were given 3 hours.
I reached out to explain that we had booked a trip to the Grand Canyon, not Williams. In response I was offered a refund of $352 which covered the difference in hotel cost, nothing more.
I am very unhappy with the very limited time we had with the Grand Canyon. I am very disappointed in the response from the travel co. Again, I understand disasters happen. However, I feel our accommodations should have been moved to a hotel that allowed us a reasonable amt of time within the park (which is the trip we booked). We will not use this travel co again and do not recommend it to others.
