ThetaData - Retired options trader’s dream come true.
I have been a customer of ThetaData for almost three years now and have watched the company grow and mature along the way. I am retired from the world of HFT/day trading options, but I'm still very interested in studying historical options data and how the markets behave.
The main thing that stands out is how ThetaData gives instant access to both real-time and historical OPRA data down to the millisecond level. OPRA is the SEC's public feed covering quotes and trades for over 1.5 million options symbols across 4,400+ stocks, ETFs, and indexes.
Back when I was actively trading, getting usable historical options data was a real hassle. It required an expensive live data subscription, maintaining banks of high-capacity hard drives to store everything, spending endless hours on programming to process it all, and handling way more set-up and ongoing maintenance than one person could keep up with consistently. ThetaData completely changes that. I can now pull exactly the data I need on demand in seconds with none of that heavy lifting or constant upkeep. It's an amazing accomplishment, especially for anyone doing research or back testing.
When I first started using ThetaData, I was blown away by the support from the developer/CEO, plus the active user community. Even as it has grown, customer service still feels like a top priority - right up there with the data quality itself. The developers and management are still very active in the Discord support channel, jumping in to answer everything from basic questions to really detailed technical stuff.
I highly recommend ThetaData to anyone who is serious about historical options data, whether for research, back testing, or just satisfying curiosity about the markets. It's made studying options history so much easier and more accessible.
