I was in a really tough position with a Status 6 marker on my credit file. Even though I had paid my mortgage on time for 24 months, I just couldn’t shake the historic arrears that had built up following a family bereavement. I approached so many companies that claim to specialise in adverse credit, and every single one of them turned me down the minute they saw my case would be a bit tricky. I wasted a lot of time with specialists touting big claims about dealing with "nightmare scenarios," only to be let down.

It was out of pure frustration and as a last resort that I went to John Charcol. I had used them some years ago and they were just as good then, but I didn't realise they also dealt with complex cases like mine. But they do. They deal with every type of customer that needs mortgage financing, and in my case, succeeded where everyone else failed.

I dealt with Molly Wilsden, who is a partner at John Charcol, and I have to say—she is a total cut above anyone else in the market. Right from the start, she completely understood my situation and showed genuine empathy, treating me like a human being rather than just another money-making client. Her knowledge of the market is incredible—she did extensive, transparent research and simplified the whole process for me.

The speed at which she works is phenomenal, yet it never felt rushed or overwhelming. She answered every enquiry made by phone or email quickly and efficiently, and constantly followed up without ever being pushy. In her updates, it was clear she had considered every eventuality and option, which is exactly what you want from a real broker who knows their business.

She knows how to package a deal, sell it to the lender, and match your requirements perfectly with their criteria. Molly managed to get me a deal within just a few weeks, and the entire remortgage was completed smoothly and seamlessly within a couple of months.

6 months process to close a simple mortgage wasn’t what I anticipated going into this. Poor recommendation from John Charcol of an unprofessional solicitor that delayed the process. Overall average at best experience.

As a single first-time buyer in London, my case was not straightforward, and I had previously been rejected by high street banks. Alvin was excellent throughout the whole mortgage process. From the start, Alvin took the time to understand my circumstances properly and explored lots of different mortgage products to find the right option for me.

I also want to mention Kathrine H, who was incredibly helpful in chasing solicitors, keeping things moving, and helping with the additional bits that come with buying a home. Her support made the process feel much less stressful.

Holly Grant was also fantastic in helping me arrange the right protection, including life insurance, income protection, and critical illness cover. She explained everything clearly and made sure I had the right cover in place for my circumstances.

Overall, Alvin and the wider team at John Charcoal were knowledgeable, supportive, and persistent from start to finish. I am very grateful for Alvin’s help in getting me onto the property ladder and would happily recommend him and the team to other first-time buyers.

Is the 2nd or 3rd time having used JC as a broker and again have offered well considered options and best advice, based on our previous requests and different wants each time. We had Charlotte Rischmond supporting us this time round and kept up the positive experience we've had with JC, covering available options and good advise following our questions on each.
