I don't know who in their right mind would use HL in 2026. I have been with HL for over 5 years, but today, they are not standing up to the competition. Crazy fees and a terrible digital experience. But how they handled transferring my ISA out to another provider was atrocious! They literally did everything they could possibly do to make it as difficult and as long as possible. My partner's experience is even worse. Stay away, there are many and much better options out there!
Clunky and unnecessarily bureaucratic.
Nothing about the process of opening up a junior isa for my son has been easy. I’ve decided to go with another provider due to multiple misunderstandings and delays. 3 weeks just to get a pin due to someone not sending the first one then 2 turning up, then neither working, now changing the name on the account has become impossible.

I can’t believe this! I now have two cash ISAs open with this company and in order to further a complaint I have already lodged (which seems to be going nowhere). I need a statement of an account for both ISAs. I went online where they are and there two buttons to download a PDF of, either transactions or statements. The problem is they both do the same thing, they only show transactions. No opening balance, no closing balance and no account identification number. So I rang and spoke to a “senior cross-skilled consultant”. He said he understood the fault and would send full statements of both accounts to my secure message box. The next day I received one thing document, a transaction history. No reference to the two ISAs, no open or closing balances. Not statements.
So I had to ring again, that’s when things got strange. The person I spoke to told me that I could not get a statements of my accounts that were proper statement. I asked to speak to a line manager or his superior, he said I couldn’t. I asked him to get either of them to ring me, they haven’t. It is ridiculous that a financial institution the size of Hargreaves Landsdown can not or will not provide statements or make them available to download. Is it perhaps because they don’t want me to have a record of their previous wrong doing?

Stocks & Shares ISA fees up 333%, SIPP fees up and then 'Active Savings' - took nearly one week to open my account - so lost interest - and then the account reduced interest rate - BUT - same account for new investors paying Higher interest - not very 'active' in my opinion.
Called H-L today - totally disinterested - 'you're good to leave' = zero loyalty after 25 years - AJ Bell much more transparent and less costs.
The fee changes appear to favour those with less invested / younger people - but perhaps H-L have not factored in the opportunity costs of moving SIPP into drawdown and the fees they earn from that

Having used their cash savings for a short time, I realised that there are some disadvantages with respect to transaction timescales.
When you deposit into a fixed term product, you have to put your money in at least the day before the interest period starts - so you lose a day of interest (or more if you deposit earlier than the stated "start date").
Similarly, when you withdraw cash from an easy access account, you have to put it into their non-interest earning cash hub overnight before you get it back. This means that you lose a day of interest and annoyingly, if you are sitting down to pay bills/invest your savings, you can't do it all in one day/one session - you have to wait until the late afternoon the following day to get the money in your bank account.
Other bank websites offer same day interest starts on fixed term bonds deposits and pay out cash within 10 minutes on easy access withdrawls - this negates any benefit of the HL offering in my opinion.
In my opinion, these disadvantges are not that clear in their marketing info (probably in the small print - so check if deposit and take out timings matter to you).

10 years ago when I first joined HL with a stocks & Shares ISA and a LISA I would've given them 5 stars back then. Customer service was excellent and I really liked the platform and all it had to offer. It was a bit pricey but I was happy to pay with the customer service and experience provided.
Fast forward and things aren't the same anymore, they charge far too much commission for trades, they have in real terms increased their fees and the platform now looks dated. I got very tired of paying £11.95 commission every trade so moved to Free trade in March - so nice to have no fees & no commissions on trades.
The major reason I moved however is that the customer service isn't where it used to be. It's slower and the help provided isn't as good as it used to be, I have sent numerous messages requesting dividends to be sent to my new provider that HL have held for weeks. Lots of computer says no answers with one agent saying that they will be sent when some system kicks in and sends them in a few weeks time. Nearly a month has passed since they were paid and still no sign even though I was told they would arrive on the 10th. Very irritating to have a good amount of money held by them for no reason.

Overpriced for what it is.
HL was always a top tier service with reasonable costs. However since AJ Bell came onto the scene the SIPP on AJ Bell is 0.25% compared to the HL 0.35% and honestly the service is as good if not better with AJB.
However since ... 'reducing their fees' in March 2026 HLs ISA are now a total rip off. I have shut HL ISA and moved to AJBell. No one should pay the outragious fees HL charge for ISAs.
Update after HL Response: HL used to cap ISA fees at £45 a year, AJ Bell £42.
Since the fee change March 2026 people need to be aware that whilst many receive a lower cost (including my SIPP) the ISA is now capped at £150.00 a year.
So now AJBell ISA cap £42, HL ISA Cap £150.00. The majority of people may save a few pounds here and there, but other accounts holding shares such as ISA and general investing account now charge over trebble what AJB do...
