Worst customer service in the world
I don't even know how to start. Instead of writing a 10page worth complain, I will resume as:
I purchased two kits of Reptile UV Fixture + lamp on petco online that were defective, the email confirmation did not have an order number and when clicking "view order" would send me to an error page.
I went in the closest shop to ask a refund or exchange, on 9645 Skokie Blvd Illinois and first of all, the manager was being not helpful at all. Another staff was helping me going through the phone customer service which was a pain and finally, I could not have a refund because it passed 60 days (I unfortunately did not test the lamp and was awaiting from my reptiles to arrive), I understand the complication but first attendant in the phone said he would give me a credit store in the same value (as the lamp should be good for a year anyways and arrived defected. Then he needed to finish the procedure with the manager in store, I pass the phone to him and he end the call instead. We call a second time, explain all over again and now the second person in phone just play dumb and ignore I was promised a credit store. I just honestly gave up as no one in the phone neither in person can help me. So I just lost $150 and will repurchase it again from either chewy or amazon and never pass close to Petco again.
I can't even do this complain for petco directly, because there is no email option for that, just online chat.

re: pet vital care monthly fees - i purchased in the store after asking questions 07/09/2025 around 4pm (07/10/2025: my co worker gave me number of her local vet and she told me that i was given incorrect information regarding my kittens) when I called the number to cancel the membership - LESS THAN 24 hrs later - i was told by CS 'romella' that i could not get a refund because I signed a contract - quote ... then she understood I was upset and offered to only refund me 1 membership. I asked what USA state she was living in, and she was in a foreign country and telling me that she would only refund me 1 membership)
I called the provided number on my other phone and 'kay' answered the phone in a foreign country and she completely refunded my money and cancelled my membership! she did NOT lecture me either and did 'romella' ... this is a warning to anyone ... I was told in the petco store incorrect information regarding my two kittens confirmed by a local Vet...

Disappointed with Petco’s Live Fish Policy
I’m extremely disappointed with Petco’s live fish return policy. I purchased fish in good faith, asked for a cancelation of my order within 1 hour then only to learn that they won’t accept returns, offer a credit, or help in any meaningful way if something doesn’t work out—even when the fish are healthy and conditions are reasonable. I expected more support and flexibility from a national pet retailer, especially when dealing with live animals and the challenges of new aquarium setups. Unfortunately, this experience makes me think twice about shopping here again.
The worst part - these fish now have no home or chance for survival, we have a freshwater tank not salt water. The store will not even take them back for free. We're asking neighbors who might be able to help and have a marine aquarium.

I arrived for my dog’s grooming appointment with my receipt for his rabies vaccine. The groomer, with a rude and dismissive attitude from the start, barked “Get your dog off MY counter” as I tried to retrieve the info she asked for. There was zero professionalism, zero courtesy, and certainly no love for animals or their owners on display. She then refused to honor my appointment because I didn’t have the actual certificate—even though I had proof of vaccination.
Unlike her, I don’t get paid for my time, and she treated mine like it had no value. I will NEVER return to this PETCO. This groomer was miserable, unhelpful, and made it clear she’d rather not be dealing with people or pets. Rude, rude, rude. Do better.
PET DEATH DUE TO VET NEGLIGENCE
My 8 year old cat died due to Vetco Total Care Hackensack's negligence...of course, the doctor (Dr. AK - Abdul K.) chose to avoid blame (lying about what was given to my cat that killed him, said "what's done is done", did everything but accept responsibility). I was forced to escalate this case and to no surprise, PETCO showed even more unprofessionalism. My emails and calls were ignored; Customer Relations chose not to take the Customer Relations call telling me to call the Hackensack Hospital instead because the case was so messy, they didn't even want to touch it; lead doctors of Vetco's Eastern Region have even had their hand in changing the events. It took 2 weeks for someone for upper management to even respond. They are the MOST brainless, coldhearted, unorganized group of lying, petty underqualified morons. They have no respect for pet's lives assuming a simple apology for killing my cat is all that is owed. To those looking to give PETCO your money and business, I'd like to save you the headache and advise you to go elsewhere.
Oder Nightmare with Zero Customer Service
On June 24, after getting home from our Veterinarian, I entered an order for 2 6.6lb bags of Royal Canin Feline Urinary SO Calm as set forth on the prescription from our vet. Pursuant to the instructions on the order page I uploaded the Rx from the vet. Petco's site indicated it had been received. I have since uploaded the Rx four additional times. When I heard nothing I looked and the site said I had to mail the Rx despite providing buttons to allow upload on two different pages on the site. I contacted Petco's 800 number and spoke to someone who said that Petco would contact me. No contact has ever been made. Later Petco's site said I would need to mail the Rx. I did mail the Rx to Petco late last week. Today I was notified by American Express that Petco had charged my card for the full price of the order which I assumed meant Petco was going to ship the order. When I looked for the order under My Account on the Petco sight all I saw was a notice that I had made no orders in the last 3 months. When I contacted the chat line again today after endless waits the agent advised me that he or she "not able to see the exact status of the order. I will update you about this within this day via email." I am not surprised I have received no email.

I have recently made the decision to take my business elsewhere due to a significant and troubling decline in the store’s conditions.
Upon recent visits, I was overwhelmed by a strong and unpleasant odor immediately upon entering. The animal enclosures, from the rodents to the birds, appeared consistently unclean and poorly maintained. The condition of the ferrets, in particular, was extremely concerning. It raises serious questions about how often these animals are being cared for and whether proper standards of hygiene and welfare are being upheld.
Additionally, the facility itself appears to be in disrepair. The carpet near the entrance emits a foul and moldy smell. This, combined with the overall lack of cleanliness, creates a very unwelcoming and unsanitary environment.
Previously, I purchased frozen feeder rats at this location for my pet snake. However, I noticed a decline in product quality as my snake began refusing to eat them. When I switched to PetSmart, there was an immediate and noticeable improvement—she resumed eating regularly, confirming my suspicions about the quality at Petco.
The neglect, lack of cleanliness, and apparent disregard for animal welfare at this store are deeply concerning. I am seriously considering reporting these issues to the appropriate authorities, as they may constitute a violation of animal care standards.
I hope this feedback is taken seriously and that corrective action is taken promptly. Animal welfare and a clean, safe shopping environment should be the minimum expectation for any pet retail establishment.

Online orders/pharmacy/petco creditcard nightmares.. was using them for my dogs grooming, vet services, attempted med refill and the credit card is also a nightmare the way they hold funds and bill orders..a big joke. 4 months(started back on 1/19/2025) and still can't get my dog's meds, last time we used the grooming service, his nose got injured. BUYER BEWARE: Vital Care Premier- it was sold to me at the register where I was told it was a monthly membership fee and I could cancel anytime, but they would like people to try it for at least a year.
The REAL STORY is much different, it's actually a 1-year membership paid off in monthly installments; when you cancel, they continue to take payments for whatever number of monthly 'payments' remain on your 'Annual Membership' up until the calendar day and month you originally signed up. IT IS NOT A MONTHLY MEMBERSHIP THAT COSTS $19.99 +TAX PER MONTH
ITS A $239.88 ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP TO BE PAID OFF BY AUTOMATIC PAYMENTS IN 12 INSTALLMENTS.

99.9% of the space in Petco is for dogs. Every time I go in, the are reorganizing to make more room for more types of dog food, while reducing the cat supplies. And their rewards card is a joke. If you don't redeem each month, the points go away. I'm happy to give my business to ANY other store.

I went to Petco in Brighton Village Place, Brighton, MI to purchase a Guinee Pig. I have an entire set up at home that is perfect for a healthy happy animal life. I spent over an hour in the store purchasing additional items, 200.00, on the way to check out, I was told I did not purchase enough items in their store to take home the animal. When I called and talked to a supervisor, they were willing to assist me, only so long as I had already paid for everything !!! When I told her I had not yet paid, I was trying to check out and take the Guinee Pig home, but was told I could not do so, without spending more money in their store, I was told TOO BAD !!!!!!!! Horrible operation and employees

Technicians have been super amazing but the vet was a super rude, see you next Tuesday type personality. Very judgemental, poor attitude, and unprofessional. Definitely turned me off the idea of bringing any of my pets here for care. Dr. Eiko is her name, spelling could be off.
Instead $80, PetCo charged $145, to send me frozen fishes, not live ones.
On the early days of having a fish tank in place, PetCo was the easy go to store for any need. While the in person went well, the online journey was a total disaster. So, I was totally naive, and got excited with the Black Friday price for live fish, considering that I wanted to get some glofish, and also would be cool to get some female guppies and a two cardinal tetras to complete the balance of the groups I had back then. During the process I one specific set of glowfish, but changed my mind looking to buy a mixed group instead. So, I deleted the wrong set, kept the in I wanted, and 3 guppies and. 2 cardinal tetras. I remember checking the basket and everything was correct, so I executed the purchase right away. Once I was notified about the charges I realized that the cost of this purchase was extreme inflated considering that on tags promoting the black Friday they stated that there was free shipping while everything was half price, but they were charging me $35 bucks for the “2 days delivery” that is mandatory for live fish - something not clear on the page during Black Friday. But also, instead one set of glowfish, the second set that I had deleted and was not on my cart when I executed the purchase, somehow was included on the bill. It did not passed 5 minutes from the moment I closed the purchase, to the moment I was talking with someone on the customer support te over the phone, where I explained the situation and left interaction with a confirmation that I would be reimbursed for the extra payment, as she removed the extra set of fish from my purchase. Not even 24hours went by, and a box with both sets of glofish arrived in my, while the guppies and tetras would be shipped once they had any available. I called the customer service another time, and the lady on support apologized for the mistake, attesting she could see on the system that the item was removed on my previous interaction, for this reason, PetCo was giving me this new set for free. The set I bought at the end was more that I could handle on my tank, imagine having 5 fishes more than I planned? Now I had to figure out a way to donate the extra fish, as PetCo did not accept a return. But less than 24 hours all the glofish were adopted by a different family cause all they did was attack each other on the short stay on the tank. Remember that they charged me $35 for a 2 day shipping? The tetras and guppies only got shipped in December, only wrapped in news paper with a hand warmer bag to keep 5 small gentle fish traveling to New York City. All 4 arrived dead frozen - but I was relieved they did not had the third guppy, not believing that a major company like PetCo would be so unprofessional to execute this shipping. After a long talk with costumer support they convinced me that this was a mistake and the next delivery would be more cautious and protect the fishes from the weather, and I was stupid enough to believe them. A few weeks later, a batch of 5 frozen fishes arrived on my home, leaving heartbroken. 9 frozen fishes were killed by PetCo on this process - something that the team offering support do not even pretend they cared about it at this point they send 6 dollars as a return over this purchase, as they disregarded the pictures I sent showing the dead fish, while the glofish set that was removed from the cart already, and was a gift from PetCo, was still charged. And even though almost a month had passed since I executed this purchase, they had the balls to sustain the charges of 2 day shipping. So, at the end, an purchase of $80,00, became more than $145 dollars, for nothing, as not even the fish that arrived was kept at the end. Just by February they confirmed that this would be the outcome for my case, what just made my case handling a serious case of depression - as the fish tank is part of my treatment, and bring piece but not if you’re a PetCo costumer.

The dumbest thing is buying online for pick up and when you get to the store, you have to stand in line, behind everyone that is already there. What's the point of buying online then? Same amount of time, if I would have just gone in and pick up the bag myself and stood inline to pay. Stupid process!
