Professional, efficient, courteous

We have just exchanged on the sale of our house at OX2 9RF.
Like many house sellers, we went into this process with a very cynical view of estate agents. We were expecting the worst and to have to continually chase and cajole during the process.
Immediately upon meeting the manager of the Summertown branch of Penny Sinclair we felt assured - by his knowledge, frankness and openness about the selling process. All of this chimed with our practical experiences and real life. He made us a number of promises on signing. He kept every single one. Our house was on the market with a professional brochure and impressive web-presence within days. We had a full price offer (on which we have just exchanged) within a couple of weeks (our second visit). His team were well briefed and carried on the professional approach which he had conveyed to us.
We are incredibly grateful for his deft and empathetic handling of our buyers (and of us!) during what has been a stressful and intense period.
We will not hesitate to recommend Penny Sinclair.

Buying a property in Oxford

While searching for a property to buy in Oxford we had experience dealing with several local estate agents and Joe from Penny&Sinclair stood out thanks to his pleasant and attentive attitude to us as buyers. Joe tried to understand what our requirements are and offered multiple properties that could suit us. This strategy clearly benefits both buyers and sellers and so I would warmly recommend P&S to anyone selling or buying a property in Oxford.

True professionals

We approached many agents with our particular needs and were getting concerned that we wouldn’t find the right property. We then received a call from Georgia who, quite impressively, remembered our requirements and advised us about a property about to be listed. The property was ideal so we really are grateful for Penny & Sinclair for actually keeping our details on file and thinking of us when the perfect solution presented itself. We also had a couple of changes to the dates which were handled courteously and professionally without making us feel like we’ve just ruined someone’s day

I have just had a very good experience…

I have just had a very good experience with Penny & Sinclair when selling my house. They have been excellent at communicating from the offset, and Sean, our agent, was very helpful in what was a difficult process at times. I recommend them to anyone buying or selling.

Very impressive service

I wanted to commend the very impressive manner in which our agent Sean Herdman-Low at Penny & Sinclair has taken us through the process of selling our house. I have bought and sold four or five properties over the last thirty-five years and Sean has been far and away the best agent I’ve ever dealt with. I invited five of the main Summertown estate agents to come and value our house and Sean’s obvious enthusiasm for it, and my instincts, told me he would be the right person to sell it for us. From the beginning all his communication has been prompt and clear, he’s intelligent and well-informed, he’s unfailingly professional but also brings a sensitivity and caring to the process which has been very much appreciated during a sometimes stressful process. Great service all round and highly recommended.

Thank You to Penny & Sinclair!!

Since partnering with Penny & Sinclair (Georgia Guy) back in July 2022 for short-let rental needs, it has been such a fantastic experience. When traveling outside the US (where I permanently reside), locating short-let rental properties can sometimes be overwhelming but Penny & Sinclair have made it a seamless process with their communication, kindness, and more importantly to ensure they provide property options that best fit me and my families needs. I highly recommend Penny & Sinclair for all rental needs and more!

Immediate and trustworthy reactions to any inquiries or comments by both agents I had contact with at Penny and Sinclair Short Lets.
Problems at the property, when there were any, were sorted out quickly and efficiently.
The property itself was outstanding in quality and positioning and accurately described on the website.

Very good experience as a buyer - everyone we dealt with was very professional and helpful and Farzana (East Oxford office) who dealt with our property was extremely pleasant and responsive. Would definitely recommend and consider selling with P&S when the time comes.

Reassurance at a time when it is much needed.

Farzana is the lovely calm and professional person you need at what can be a very stressful time. Everyone in the team I spoke with was great too and the solicitors they recommended were ace.

Very responsive and professional

My friends and I let a place in Oxford with Penny and Sinclair and had a great experience. Very attentive to detail and when we had small conflicts with the landlord they mediated successfully. Great choice!

5* - Very Positive Experience

I have not yet moved into my rental property, but the experience I have had so far with Penny & Sinclair has been really positive.

Nathan Tan, the lettings manager, has been great every step of the way. He arranged an in-person viewing for me the following day after I called, kindly waited for us at the property after we were delayed due to traffic, and was very helpful whilst showing us around.

Since the viewing Nathan has sent regular updates regarding my application, responding to emails and answering all of my questions promptly.

Overall a very positive experience - thank you!

Was harassed throughout the tenancy…

Was harassed throughout the tenancy with inspections every few weeks. The end of tenancy charges were so high for made up items that I hired a law firm. They got an out of court settlement as the contract paperwork hadn't been completed correctly. Not good for landlord or tenant.

I am sorry to read this review. I have invited you to share more information, although I am yet to hear from you. I would like to look into this situation for you. Please could you confirm which office you dealt with as I would like to confirm where you rented as I cannot locate you as a client. We have standard quarterly checks so uncertain why there would have been any need for further checks beyond this and an independent inventory clerk on check out. We are also members of The Property Ombudsman Scheme which is the route we would take with any tenant unhappy with the result of the check out inventory. Generally Hands-off, but Unprofessional Treatment upon Moving Out

It is also to be noted that this review was submitted three times to Penny and Sinclair on their website. It seems that they only accept positive reviews and have few, if any, reviews representing tenant experiences.

We decided to rent a property managed by Penny and Sinclair in February 2021 - the initial process was all professional and well managed, as was the move-in and key collection. In general, the agents were hands-off and rarely made any contact with us. When we raised issues about the mildew/damp present in the property when we arrived (it was taken unseen), this was handled well and some remedial work was carried out. Likewise, when we requested some items to be removed this was also facilitated. Our move out was also arranged smoothly - with new tenants being secured quickly. The sad part, however, is that in relation to our deposit and after moving out the friendly communication entirely ceased. Our response to the inventory was not acknowledged and decisions about the deposit were made by the landlady and agent without any consultation on our part. In the end, £150 was deducted for cleaning a number of minor issues in a copy-paste email that ignored our previous communications. Quoting from the independent clerk, the defects included "tiny pieces" and dust seen on the carpets in the hallway and bedroom and a number of "wipeable marks" on the wardrobe and kitchen draws/shelves as well as some scale left on the shower and sink. We made an enquiry immediately in response to the quote to ask for more information: "The property is in a generally very clean condition and we explained that it needed a minimal vacuum and some surfaces to be wiped. We offered some fair apportionment of the clean with the landlady because a full clean would count as betterment." Eventually we received a quasi-legalistic email wrongly (and, unlawfully) claiming that "we ask our tenants to ensure that the property is professionally cleaned." This, of course, would be an illegal charge under the Tenant Fees Act. In fact the move-out document also wrongly stated that because of Covid-19 a professional clean was required (albeit elsewhere, different wording was used): "During the current COVID-19 outbreak you are required to ensure a professional clean is conducted at the end of your tenancy". Initially, nobody was prepared to talk to us over the phone. When we did manage to talk to the agent about the quote and what services would be included in the clean the agent was rude and derisive: she talked over me, laughed at me as I was trying to explain what it was we were concerned about and her comments were condescending and grossly exaggerated the (un)cleanliness of the property. The agent stated that the carpets were "some of the worst she had ever seen" and termed them "horrendous". When I pointed out this was both very rude, inaccurate and an exaggeration she conceded that her comments were exaggerated and apologised for the rudeness - an apology that was accepted. At no point did we deny the need for further cleaning (see initial comment above). All that was asked was that the clean would not go beyond the minor defects highlighted in the report and/or that if the landlady wished to have the whole property cleaned, that the cost would be apportioned fairly to reflect its generally clean status. In the end, it was explained that the cleaning had already been carried out and that it was supposedly limited to the defects mentioned on the report. All that unpleasantness because of their failure to listen. We never objected to having a deduction made from the deposit and would likely have agreed to the charges at the outset - we just wanted the agency to treat us respectfully, include us in the decision making and communicate with us. We requested the repayment of overpaid rent - something that was never mentioned by the agents (although it is possible they may have eventually notified us) - and received the funds promptly and in our account around ten days after the end of the tenancy.

I am course pleased to read that the check in and property management you received whilst living in the apartment was efficient and satisfactory. I have reviewed the notes made last year following your check out and the deductions were made following recommendations on the inventory carried out by a third party inventory clerk. This included carpet cleaning and additional cleaning throughout the property. The bulk of the £150 deducted I can see would have been to cover the carpet cleaning of which you were provided with photos to explain why this was required and I understand in addition to this a member of staff explained that there was the option to dispute the decision with TDS. I am sorry you felt you were treated unfairly and not listened to. The return of your remaining deposit was returned under TDS guidelines and the additional rent within 11 days of the end of your tenancy. Superior customer service....REALLY??

Penny & Sinclair claim on their website that they are renowned for quality, excellence and superior customer service. This could not be further from the truth in my experience as an ex-tenant. Their attention to detail and general follow-up to issues raised was poor and unprofessional.

STAY AWAY

STAY AWAY! Penny and Sinclair is complicit in discrimination by landlords towards people on Universal Credit and other benefits. This is despicable and straightforwardly unlawful.

The reason people don’t like Estate Agents...

After finding a new build property, we needed to sell our property to secure it. Then lockdown happened, however, a buyer out of the blue wanted to purchase our property. We accepted, however, Erling after being told to be honest to our buyer, told them we would be out in 2 weeks after exchange. After creating tension between us and our buyer, he moved her in to rent 3 doors down! He asked us to also pay her rent of 1300k a month, a ridiculous request in which he thought was acceptable. He also showed people through our windows when he knew we were out. We spoke to Mr Penny who simply said we were telling a different story to Erling. We are now homeless waiting for our house to be built. I would not recommend Penny & Sinclair to anyone.
