This company is absolutely terrible. There’s always a damn outage, and I work from home so it directly impacts my job. Now my boss is threatening to write me up because of it. This isn’t a one-time issue either — it happens at least once every quarter without fail. I’m beyond frustrated and honestly pissed off that I’m paying for a service that can’t even stay reliable when I need it most.
The math doesn't math
The math doesn't math with this. Company!! tell me how I paid them over 753 dollars less then two weeks ago, and they cut my service for a mysterious balance of 185 in change? If y'all told me to pay over 700 dollars to avoid disconnect, and y'all said that it was the total to be paid without any left over balance at that time. They wait a two weeks and cut me off for a balance I didn't know existed. The representative claimed that it was the algorithm that shut me off not duke energy. SMH I don't understand if my bill due the 22nd of April why y'all shut me of on it 2nd for an imaginary balance that wasn't made clear when I paid!

Duke Energy has a system where their employees are incentivized to push wiring insurance when you start service. If you refuse, they redirect you to another representative who then tries to convince you that you need it. This results in a hidden charge on your bill.
As a real estate investor managing multiple properties, I can confirm this is a blatant scam. Duke Energy is essentially forcing unnecessary charges on customers. Please check your bills carefully to ensure you or your family members are not being charged for this wiring insurance.

If I could rate no stars i would. I’m always up on managing my bills as an independent young women. I had an instance recently with having to split my payment since bill was high recently and honestly my bill being more high with me using no difference in my home make no sense. My most recent payment I made I paid a part of my upcoming bill this month before due date which is on April 10th. When I paid part of the payment of upcoming bill I used a one time payment this time with my account number cause I usually use my card. Tell me why Duke had the Audacity to reuse access to my account without consent to pay the upcoming bill in advance. I never selected autopay I selected one time payment options before.These fools try say they ain’t actually pull out when its obviously reflected on my bank account and on the official site and then they tried excusing a 3rd party making a move on my account without consent , I straightened them out with obvious facts and evidence. This company is full with BS and their employees are mentally slow.
Bad CSR Support w/ Dulke Energy!
On March 1st (2026'), I had a power outage. So, I attempted to reset my breakers & nothing happened. I called Duke Energy (Florida) CSR & the male I spoke to said they would send someone out... A few minutes later, he called back & said that they checked their computer & it "wasn't their main breaker." So, I had to have a licensed electrician come out-He did his diagnostics & said it was "Dukes breaker that was tripped." He reset Duke's main breaker (10 mins) & charged me $275!! I called Duke CSR back-tech support too & they back peddled --- They said no credits were available- Awful! No responsibility for their error! Stay FAR AWAY from Duke Energy if you can!!

This company Duke Energy should definitely be looked into and investigated for un savory business practices. Soo many people in my town are complaining about astronomical energy bills especially elderly people on fixed incomes. Some elderly people are keeping heat and air off and suffering being hot or cold just to keep costs down and still getting high bills. When is enough going to be enough for a company thats getting all the bonuses and raises and profitability is way up? Then when you call you can never speak to a manager or get someone to even come out and check meter etc for issues. So yall want to price gauge us and take the money but offer no customer service. We need more options and to be able to choose who we want for utilities bc only having one option this is like a greedy monopoly and that is suppose to be illegal.

ZERO if I could!!! I have called Duke Energy just a handful of times in my 20 years of service with them! Recently, I made two phone calls that have been a disaster! One of them I filed a complaint with the Utility Commissioner! I am still on the phone with a CS rep who doesn't understand that I want my budget billing reviewed. We replaced all of electric appliances with gas and I dont want to continue paying the high monthly payments. I have been on the phone, right now for 16 minutes and the rep still has me on hold! Why can't Duke Energy pay individuals that are in the US that actually use their services? Why are we "trying" to speak with representatives that don't understand what we are saying! Why can't we have an option for our electric company? Why do we have to settle with horrible customer service? Duke Energy makes billions from their customers, why are we forced to speak with representatives that don't understand what we are talking about? Horrible, horrible company!!!

So expensive!! For what reason. Charging me $700 just to start electricity with them because I’ve never had their service. Outrageous! I’ve never ever had to pay that much to start service with any company. No wonder all the reviews are terrible and everyone hates this company. They rob people. We had a tree fall on the property I work at, After the electrician got things fixed I called to have Duke put power back to the pole this eneded up being 8 calls, everytime I called the very rude lady on the phone suddenly needed something she didn't tell me about before, I would get that and call back and she'd need something else asked her 5 times is this all you need she said yes call back again and now they need something else. Then they schedule them to come out they came out sat on the property for hours and did nothing, their excuse was ice, so it took more than 2 hours to realize there was ice and you couldn't work???? Then they left trash everywhere, their water and soda bottle cigarette packs how disgusting to do this at a place of business, have half a mind to bring you your garbage back.

When my monthly bill is more than a paycheck that's insane. My bill for February 2026 is over 500.00 and that's keeping the thermostat at 60.
Rising Rates, Zero Transparency, No Alternatives
Duke Energy continues to raise rates while offering little transparency about where the money is actually going. Monthly bills are loaded with vague line items, storm recovery fees, infrastructure riders, and other add ons that feel permanent rather than temporary. As customers in a monopoly service area, we have no alternative provider, no negotiating power, and no real choice but to absorb whatever increases are approved.
Reliability is marketed as a priority, yet outages and service inconsistencies still occur while costs steadily climb. Project overruns and policy driven investments seem to land on customers’ bills, not on the company’s balance sheet. Meanwhile, bill explanations remain confusing and difficult to interpret, making it nearly impossible for the average customer to understand what they are actually paying for.
In a market without competition, transparency and accountability should be higher than normal. Instead, customers are consistently asked to pay more while receiving less clarity and no meaningful recourse.

Online portal didn't process move out. Got charged for a month that I did not occupy the residence. Customer service was unhelpful.

duke energy price gouges energy and our government allows them to increase our rates. $451.00 for electric and gas this year and last year was $343.00. This is bull $hit. Duke energy owns piedmont natural gas so they have a monopoly over energy. Duke energy you all need to get it together.
